Its always good to have 2 or 3 champs you can play in each role. You don't have to master all of these champs just enough to get a general idea of what to do in that role. Supporting is a lot about trying to control vision (Getting Vision for your team and denying vision for the enemy) and peeling for your carries. but ill try to highlight a few things if i can to help out a bit.
- Bot lane takes 9 minions to hit level 2 (6 melees and 3 casters) if you hit 2 first go aggressive, if not back off
- first back should be around 900 ish gold or more. pick up sightstone, control ward and swap your trinket to sweeper. any extra gold pick up a few pots or something (2 or 3)
- Good Control ward spots are at Tri Bush (both sides), Bush at the end of the river on bot side (if your pushed up and can hold it for a bit) behind red (blue side) and at blue (red side)
- Good ward spot are at Tri bush at dragon, outside dragon. (ADC should ward Bot lane bushes if they can)
- Good deep wards for spotting then enemy jungler (like an eve) are at krugs, red (for red side) and between gromp, blue buff and tri bush (for blue side)
- Feel free to roam as a support. you are not the ADC personal slave. you are ment to get for picks or protect the carries. You are the teams support. Say if your dropping a ward at drag and your ADC is hanging back and farming safe then head mid and try for a pick or just provide some pressure.
- At Level 9 swap your trinket for Oracle Alteration
8)Try to have at least 1 control ward at all times. in case you need to move it or someone kills yours (I normally hold 2)
- Spelltheif's Edge for poke supports who can poke well and stay safe doing so (Karma, Zyra, Morg, Brand, Nami)
- Relic Shield for your tankier supports (Braum, Leona, Taric) Thresh can take Relic Shield as well but keep in mind he doesn't get the execute on minions because he is ranged
11)When in doubt Ancient Coin. Its useful on anyone. You don't have to do anything. Minion dies your get HP and gold. It provides the lowest gold generation of the 3 (Relic being the highest total gold and Spell being the Highest gold for your personally assuming your can proc then offen)
12)If you lose your bot lane turret early and your ADC is behind. Drop some wards and roam. Roam mid or roam top. Towers gone and its pointless to hang out in lane if the towers gone. Just let them sit in bot alone, farm and get some solo EXP unless the enemy bot lane returns to keep shoving the lane. The Enemy will likely rotate mid to push that lane so provide them with some back up while your ADC catches up.
- Watch your Map. I know its not just a supports job to watch the map and ping ganks and such but keep an eye on it. but look at it often. ADC's have to focus on last hitting, watching the enemy position and watching for ganks and such. since your not last hitting as often glance at the map a bit more then usual. keep an eye on wards and when they are about to expire.
14)In lane try to stay for all the melee and cannon minions. go to ward when there are just casters left. this will minimize the amount of EXP you lose and keep your level closer to your ADC's. It's natural for supports to be a few levels behind of everyone else since you leave lane a lot to ward. but if you need to drop a ward or step out for a sec it's not too big of a deal.
15)Try to always back at the same time as your ADC. it minimizes the time apart in the early game and lowers the chance of the ADC getting picked early.
16)This one it from personal experience but if you can show your ADC that you will do what ever you can to protect them when they need it then they can feel more confident and be a bit more aggressive. Personally when I know my support has my back, I move a bit more forward, throw a few more auto and get a bit more damage in. But when I don't feel i'm being protected at all then i hang further back, toss out fewer autos and play a bit more passive.
Hard Engage supports like Leona are counted by poke and disengage
Poke Supports like Zyra and Karma are countered by sustain
and sustain supports like Soraka and Sona are countered by Hard Engage
A good hard engage support right now is Alistar. hes pretty simple as long as your can hit the combo. Good items for him are Knight's Vow, Locket of the Iron Solari and Face of the Mountain
Good Poke supports are Brand and Zyra. Generally they are build more AP heavy so like Sightstone, Frost Queen's Claim then Rylai's Crystal Scepter and Liandry's Torment
Good Sustain Supports are Soraka and Nami. you generally build them more utility then AP. so Coin (best for Soraka) or Spell (good on Nami) then Locket, Redemption, Mikael's.
Good Disengage supports are Janna and Nami. Both are great peelers and Disengagers. More of a utility build on these guys too.
Builds on support are completely up to you tho. As long as you have a sightstone item no one really cares what your build but i'll go through some support items anyways.
Locket of the Iron Solari is a great item. AoE shield and it gives your some Armor and MR. Its a pretty useful item on almost any support.
Ardent Censer is good for if your team has 2 or 3 people who primarily Auto Attack to deal damage. it can be useful if you have a Auto Attack Heavy ADC as well like a Jinx, Vayne, Trist or Twitch. You need a Shield or a heal to proc the effect so Karma, Janna, Nami, and Soraka it works well on.
Mikael's Crucible is also an amazing item. I never see anyone build it anymore tho. Its a targeted CC removal (Suppress and blind aside) it doesn't heal anymore but its great to save a mid laner who maybe doesn't have a QSS or an ADC who has already used theirs.
Zeke's Harbinger is another good item. One time link to an ADC or AP mid and its done. just hang around them, let it fill up and when it procs you both get a free 50% crit and 20% AP. on top of that your get some CDR, Mana, Armor and AP. Work well with Auto Heavy ADC's or crit build ADC's (this item lets a ADC get 100% crit with only 2 crit items)
Boots are normally Mobility or Lucidity. you can go Swiftness if you want or Sorc's if you're a mage support
this was a lot longer then i thought it would be >.>. but it's some of the more basic stuff. feel free to add on to this if you want or ask questions. I hope it helps someone.
