So how the heck does this make sense?

I just dodged a game where I asked our jg to ban Zed, then our jg said, "I'm banning Aatrox, not Zed, he doesn't counter Veigar, Aatrox is op"

Seriously, who taught these people what's ban worthy?

Aatrox is ban worthy, depending on the player all slightly tanky hard to kite bruiser type of champions are able to heavily impact a game. I've actually seen Aatroxes getting fed and carrying a game. Let people ban who they want to ban, you can argue Zed isn't even worth banning because Veigar can place his E and stand in the edge so Zed is stunned immediately after ulting. Plus everyone is bad at him.

Aatrox can have impact but anything that runs a lethal build as a norm or can exploit it are basically in a sense: " 'Next to' True damage early game nukers" and besides Zed's weakness of popping right up next to the opponent after casting R, making him a easy target for a CC, He only needs to hit Q and maybe E to have the damage compilation to finish you off due to the lethality having more impact on the early game thanks to being able to shred thru natural armor for a easy pre-10 minute 10%~30% damage boost, depending on the lethality stack, ghost blade and mastery nerf does not really change much since Lethality runes are still a thing and Assassins can still op for item 3814 first to help counter CC or combo based champions who need to unload their entire kit, otherwise they won't be able to do any actual damage.

Especially since Zed could make perfect use of it to help deal with AP base mid lane champions

Sadly 7.6 Patch on Thursday is basically 'confirmed' to have no actual stat or item changes to fix the snowball issue still so its pretty clear Riot ain't showing much concern currently on rolling out a fix to the constant Lethality ADC issue, yet they can pull a quickie oh shit fix when a AP Assassin or a Assassin Fighter aka Ekko and Yasuo show up.

And if any of you want to white knight this then try to understand this logic: "If a champions 'gimmick' is doing high damage per 'auto' but compensates with a redesigned gimmick (Graves and Jhin, then its understandable because they now have to rely on a 'system' for how they work on Auto attacks, But when a group of champions of various 'playstyles' can build super high damage when every one of them are supposed to ultimately be a collection of AD marksmen, not AD 'caster mages', then its a major problem, especially when they don't have a 'con' to compensate for the downside trade-off of a lethality build, such as attack speed not even being a major concern to them and they end up doing more damage in a lethality build then the normal critical build that marksmen 'normally adopt.'"

Let's see, which would you rather deal with? Trash top lane opponent? Aatrox

or

AD Assassin (in meta) who's designed to say "F*ck you" to every AP mid laner? Zed

So you've seen people do well on a champion, and therefore draw a conclusion: he's good! .???

Yes, actually. Well, he can be.

I could honestly just give the same argument with Zed. It doesn't even matter the champion, it just matters about the player themselves. Every champion feeds, every champion stomps, people ban who they just don't want to see in their game which is perfectly ok. Other people you're in a game with shouldn't influence your decision unless you just don't know who to ban in the first place because you're fine with going against anyone. Champion picks only really matter where the meta matters, which is in like diamond 2+ and even then the OTP's don't mind.
