Set smite as default spell for jg

Glîtchy··143 votes·4,449 views

EDIT: not saying to lock in smite and no changing allowed, just read

Because too many times I have seen them NOT have it, now no one say "don't force meta" jg is actually extremely difficult without it for some jg champs, plus if you don't get a machete or talisman (not allowed without smite) then you have to kill like 2-3 camps to reach Lv.2

That's why I made my suggestion to allow to pick which slot it defaults to xD

Cause that's the first thing I thought of myself lmao

Still way better than jungling with summoner 4 summoner 21

Just add an exception so it doesn't change flash, or just make it default to smite and flash when you get jg role

Win/Win Solution :After you pick a champion, the default (last setting of runes % masteries and spells) on specific champ. Like squall requipe teh he he.

I think it should at least give a warning to equip smite.

Any other lane can perform their function with any summoner spell but junglers cannot reliably perform theirs without smite.

Auto-equip, I can see being problematic, but it should be really easy to set up an audible ping noise if your role is jungler but no Smite is equipped. That way people that got autofilled jungler and are trying to switch with someone don't have to deal with their summ spells being messed with.

Kloqdq10 votes

If you don't have smite on jungle you may as well just afk and let your team remake. You are going to be worthless for the first 20 minutes most likely.

Just yes please Riot, make this possible.

Gigglingdeath8 votes

Oh, so you're saying that when you get selected for jungle one of the spells defaults to smite and you CAN change it to something else, but it prevents people from forgetting to change their summs? I think this is a good idea, however, it could be annoying if something like summ slot d is always selected for this and you forget about it losing your flash. Unless ofc you can select in the menu which slot it defaults to, allowing d slot flash players or f slot flash players to not accidentally forget and take something like smite, heal.

They should allow swapping of D and F in-game.

The other solution would be to just rebind hotkey D and F.

You have to kill 2 camps to get level 2.

I will be honest. One of the most fun games this month was my jungle forgetting smite. I told him, come top and support. He split his time between jg and top support. And my lane was super free, the other guy just can't respond when you have a dog with you.

You do give up jg gold/xp/roam and objectives. But it was fun.

RookPusher14 votes

Would you please stop with this. It makes Riot think this negligent system they're running is acceptable.

50000000000000002 votes

One time I forgot smite, but I had flash/exhaust as Nunu. If anyone, Nunu is the guy to take for smiteless jungle. The ganks were deadly (it was back when Exhaust reduced armor/MR), and clear speed didn't suffer too badly.

wyvern0119768 votes

It also meant your mid and bot were free game for their jungle with no chance of counter ganks as well as 50% of your jungle camps were just extra gold and xp for the other team. May have been fun once, but its a way to lose the vast majority of the time.

MysterQ1 votes

Your points of weaknesses are not valid in low ELO imo.

Strong mid and bot should be able to survive without ganks/counterganks. Orchestrated dives are not seen often, unless they are snowballing super hard. If jungle is counterjungling, you are right he gets increased gold income. If he has a powerfarm jungler. Otherwise it means he farms more but ganks less. Our "jungle" was still taking buffs and with wards you may be able to collapse. The other jungle exp is reduced. Sure he is getting xp from the camps, sure it will be faster than your "jungle" but it won't be insane.

The big problem imo is the top lane/support needs to be ranged. You are going to shove that lane (or freeze) so having range helps you poke them out under turret. You will also slowly get outleveled on top.

I mean stick to the meta. I am not arguing for breaking the meta. But there other ways to play.

wyvern0119766 votes

Well when your opinion literally involves the word "strong" you might want to think that through, because you just added parameters to the argument.

Regardless of opinion you will lose the vast majority of games with this setup. Duo top has an abysmal win rate at all elos.

There will always be games where the enemy jungle, their lanes, or both are weak. But on average if all players are match made correctly you just lose to the gold, xp, and opportunity differential.
I don't mind a break from the meta if the other team warrants it, but the majority of the time its just better to play to win and that means playing the meta.

But here is the important question. D or F.

But here is the important question. D or F.

This is actually the main reason they haven't done something like this yet, I think. I would be way more messed up having Smite on my F key than I would be trying to jungle with Teleport or Heal.

Doozku5 votes

Just bind the D button to F and switch it back when the game ends ez.

kalima9942 votes

They can just put it in there like any other spell and let you change it lol. Just good to have it there so you don't forget it

I kinda wish smite was removed as a summoner spell and was moved to jungle items. During champion select each team would decide who their jungler is and only they get access to jungle items. Every jungle item would have an execute ability on large jungle monsters (with a cd) which grants a burst of healing. Execute could either happen passively through an auto attack when the monster is low enough or it could be an active on the item.

Red/blue smites removed due to additional summoner spell slot available for junglers. Jungle item selection could be increased to support multiple jungle play styles. Possible jungle item varieties:

  • Ranger's trailblazer (burst) - first contact with a jungle monster stuns it and nearby monsters and enhances damage for the duration
  • Tracker's knife (mobile) - lower cd on execute and increases movement speed after execute
  • Skirmisher's sabre (sustain) - extra 30 gold on execute and increases healing after execute

Edited for the sake of clarity

This is a really bad idea.

Hupsis3 votes

How so? One jungler per team who gets a jungle item with a built in smite. That's almost how it works currently but only gated to a summoner spell.

What would laners lose if smite wasn't a summoner spell? Basically nothing. What would junglers gain if smite wasn't a summoner spell? A summoner spell slot. Also why should jungle objectives be contested around smite?

Mellori2 votes

But you forgot to mention in your second section:

What would laners gain if Smite wasn't a summoner spell? Especially your Skirmisher's Sabre, I could see that on mid lane or ADCs in particular. Scoot out of lane, take raptors/krugs/gromp. Congrats, you're now beating your lane opponent.

What would junglers lose if Smite wasn't a summoner spell? In theory, maybe nothing. Except now that it isn't a summoner spell, you can no longer secure a camp/objective. It becomes a fight for it, and it's no longer a skill matchup - rather, more of a randomness feature as to who so happens to last hit it, which randomness in a moba really isn't okay, look at all the outcry about crits lately - as to who can more accurately time their smite, unless you're saying the item has an active with smite attached to it.

When making an argument you can't look at just one side. You have to look at both, for everyone affected.

Hupsis1 votes

The idea was that only the jungler would be able to purchase jungle items. That is one of the main issues I'd like to remove from the game (laners taking jungle items).

Also I see nothing wrong in contesting jungle objectives the old fashioned way. Teams can choose champions that have enough burst to steal/secure objectives.

There are few mechanics how smite could work on a jungle item.

  1. Passively through an auto attack
  2. Active on the jungle item
  3. Execute button next to the jungle monster's health bar

Active on the item would probably be the closest to the current smite. But then we can say goodbye to the ward jungle item (current tracker's knife).

ˉˉˉˉˉˉ2 votes

You make no sense and simply over complicate matters, just stop man.

Hupsis1 votes

What is so complicated about changing smite from being a summoner spell to being a passive or an active ability on a jungle item? It opens up a summoner spell slot for junglers. This was the base idea.

ˉˉˉˉˉˉ2 votes

You... you actually refuse to consider all the consequences and meta changes this would result in...?

Goddamn.

Junglers are already game defining enough without having access to an extra summoner. Imagine if Lee could jungle with Flash/Ignite while still having access to smite.

Hupsis1 votes

Jungle could be appropriately balanced around junglers having an extra summoner.

I don't think forcing a role into taking smite & flash combo 98% of the time is healthy either. Summoner specialist keystone (on PBE) allows players to change their summoners but it means they have to pick that keystone to do so. It also allows other players to pick smite for objective control later in the game... is that healthy?

Miraweave3 votes

That's a lot of extra power to balance around.

Ebolol1 votes

Upvote, I used to watch youtube videos in champ select but don't anymore after I lost back-to-back-to-back games due to a jungler without smite. Not even kidding.

pro rusher 21 votes

Omg same for me.. but the problem is.. your jungler is watching youtube videos also..

Ebolol1 votes

Saddest part is I'm a jg main, 3 games I get filled into secondary/autofill and 3 games my jg doesnt take smite lol

TheDogIsABomb1 votes

Problem I see with this idea is, what happens when you get queued for jungle and then for whatever reason decide to lane swap with someone else during champ select?

At that point you'd then have to take a moment to remember, "Oh, I was queued up for jungle, but now I'm going to a lane instead, so I should have smite autolocked in and I need to make sure to remember to change it before game starts while also figuring out everything else I need to in the small time limit I have." It just seems a little clunky toward the experience.

You may respond, "Remembering to change that one spell wouldn't be that hard," but remember, people forgetting to change one spell is the exact reason why you're making this thread now.

pro rusher 21 votes

They should probably make it, to put it on smite, but not lock it, just in case if you want to change lanes.

Cavesloth1 votes

Yes, we've all lost games because someone wasn't paying attention at the pregame lobby and forgot smite. All the yes.

mikemcparty1 votes

I've also won games without smite because I have been patient with farming, not died a million times in jungle, and then steamrolled in mid-late game.

True, its not impossible, once had a total cluster where nobody would go jungle and our jgler ended up being a janna with smite, so yeah sometimes weird stuff works, but it would still be nice to have it automatically change one to smite for people who just forgot, or went to go take a leak and didn't change it, were looking up builds and forgot, etc.

Dr Poro1 votes

so what summoner spell should be switched to smite? The one that isn't flash? Would make the most sense. Alternatively, make champ select remember the summoner spells for each role seperately so you hold onto smite even if you went top for example.

Elikain1 votes

I don't think Riot should do it. If you want to jungle, it's pretty reasonable to expect that you know full well that Smite is a jungle spell and that you can't do without it. Simply because you get a lot of perks and objective pressure with it than relying on your entire team mobilizing and helping your ass fill your single role with a massive handicap.

There're no "i forgot" or "don't force the meta" excuses. Who ever says this is a lazy ass and clearly doesn't want to fill in the role of a jungler like they're supposed to.

yougotCAGED1 votes

I agree with this simply because many people will be messing with new runes and stuff.

bleufromage1 votes

What if I am in lobby as jg but I'm trading roles with the support because they got autofilled?

Colgate Gator1 votes

Either that or a little pop up message that states that you (or anyone in the team) don't have smite.
