you can win the game without having to kill anyone. you can even win the game being 50 kills behind, kills dont matter at all in the game and should never be used as a reference for who does work for the team.
just look at supports.

I'd rather have someone with 0/0 KDA and lots of CS and participation or help otherwise rather than someone like 24/24.

Taking a big amount of gold by jacking every possible kill will lead to only your own gold lead ofc if you kill the enemy you set them behind but if you start a snowball and you are unable to finish the game on your own it's your mistake if you lose. There is also the scenario where the fed player doesnt cooperate with his team to achieve the V and just do cocky random plays who offer no advantage overall and this allows the enemy to scale up and end up winning. ALso remember if you got 15-20 kills one exhaust/cc chain will still make you useless and ofc if you let the game drag out by killwhoring and not taking objectives the enemies get items aswell and end up beeing equally strong as the time goes by.

It's honestly very situational and without a replay, we couldn't tell you exactly what happened.

getting kills allows you windows of opportunities to do this.
for example had a game where i had a min laner get 17 kills had a kda of 17-8-3 and he did play very well.. but had 28 k damage to champs
i was the tank on the team went 2-4-7 - had 15 less kills then he did ... i did 21k damage to champs
a champ who is glass cannon had 17 kills but only 7 k more damage then what i dealt
kills dont always means damage
