The reason why Jinx's ult got buffed is simple

Look at Ashe's and compare

  • For Ashe, you get an in-lane insta-fight in your favor, a long ranged savior sent from who-knows-how-far-away, or even a strong teamfight initiator. That ult's stun is insane, and with enough travel time, the person hit is almost guaranteed to die.

  • For Jinx, all you get is damage. It just picks survivors. That's it. Whether it's from 2 lanes away or it's simply used as a mid ranged finisher, it only does damage, and there's no other use for it.

Basically, Jinx's ult is outclassed by Ashe's in almost every way, so in order to further keep utility marksmen from crowding out the carries and damage dealers with the upcoming patch, they're making it so Jinx's ult is better at what it does: Finishing off survivors from a distance. Not saying Jinx is weak. We're just saying her ult is the most "meh" part of her kit. If it does too much damage or something, they might reduce the ratio to like 125% or something if I had to guess. They still get one more patch before worlds, right?

Anyway, I just wanted to make a thread to put that in perspective. A lot of people have seemed confused about it...but it's kind of obvious.

Soooo Ashe becomes fotm = Jinx needs buffs?

The champions are almost nothing alike. There's no reason to compare them at all.

Did I say "Jinx needs buffs"? I said she's strong already, but her ult's just "meh" in comparison to Ashe's ult, and the two ults share the same space, which is one more reason why Ashe is all over the place. I personally don't think either way on the matter, but I get why they buffed it. That's what I'm saying, and I know I have to edit this in because you're not gonna realize this yourself.

If you take the time to look at all the adcs that were buffed, what's the common theme? They're all damage-oriented adcs of different flavors. The utility ones all got nerfed, and only straight damage dealers got buffed. The point was that, in this area, Ashe's ult always wins out over Jinx's ult because Jinx's ult is similar, but weaker in almost all ways possible. This buff gives purpose to the more damage-oriented variant out of 2 similar ults.

This buff isn't because Jinx is weak in general, and they can possibly nerf her in some regard if she suddenly becomes insane simply because her mid/long ranged sniping is just enough to make her stupid strong. However, the point is to simply put more focus on the things that less utility-oriented marksmen provide provide as a collective, not specifically for Jinx because she's "low tier", since she isn't. Other global ults like Ez's or Draven's don't scale in effectiveness the way theirs do, so their usefulness and how their kits work into that are different. For the two ults that scale in potency with distance traveled, Jinx's is just all-around worse. This buff is leveling the playing field in this one aspect without nerfing the main part of Ashe's ult, that being the stun. That's probably why they nerfed its base damage too.

ashe and jinx are HELLA SIMILAR. Auto attack based adc's which both build runaans and have attack speed buffs. Thats about 50% of the playstyle right there. And from one perspective i want to pick ashe into bruisers because she kites better. From another I want to pick jinxx because bruisers mosh together and aoe runan crit rockets. u know? So they are both good in the same meta. Ashe has the advantage that she can make plays. Ive been playing ashe ever since they buffed her q about 6 months back and it has been her ulti that has made my win rate with her as high as 65%.

Jinx has a fast global ult that deals splash damage and has an execute effect. Ashe has a slow global ult that's used primarily for its utility as a stun. aside from them being global skill shots, they're not very similar abilities. Jinx felt fine before, buffing her ult will just push her closer to the top spot.

Jinx's is faster, but Ashe's is BETTER because, as a utility ult, it's more useful for more things. When you use utility like snares and stuns, especially highly potent ones, we don't care if it travels fast or executes. We care that it starts full-on engages in our favor and saves teammates, all while still being able to possibly pick off stragglers. Ashe's ult is simply better than Jinx's in their current forms. Jinx does almost all her fighting and killing mid-fight at mid ranges anyway, via autos. What's the point of the ult if it doesn't do enough damage to justify it over Ashe's, which can clean doom someone to death from 100% health because they're about to get pounced on by your whole team?

It would make sense if she got nerfed elsewhere in her kit or if she didn't already have 4th highest winrate with #1 being a low popularity pick and #2, #3 and #6 getting nerfs. Don't get me wrong, I will love being able to abuse her as Jinx and Ashe are my go-to ADCs, but I think it's just incorrect to go through with this. It's like buffing Trinity force without nerfing Irelia when she was already at 52% winrate. You just KNOW that you'll have to nerf her next patch.

The ult is indeed a meh part in her kit. I don't land it too often. However, it's currently just a surplus because she's already really strong without her ult.

You're right, and I honestly think she'll get nerfed somewhere else in her kit for this if her win rate balloons a bit. I think Riot's crossing their fingers on this one for this reason:

Jinx is an AA-oriented adc, not a caster. Thus, she doesn't build straight ad for that big mid-game spike because she's building AS/Crit and stuff. By late-game, Riot's logic usually is "If someone's straight stupid at that stage, it's probably justified because they got that far", so that 150% ad ratio kicking in by then isn't that stupid in the first place, and during earlier stages, she won't have too much ad to shove into the move anyway.

This is what I think Riot's banking on, so that the buff really only makes a significant difference to her mid-game snipes, and very little else, but I don't think they're going to be adverse to nerfing something before worlds if she shows signs of getting out of hand. She's already on the rise as is, and I can not stress enough that I'm fully aware of that. The guys drive-by downvoting probably think I think Jinx is weak. This is merely a thread explaining what I think is the thought process behind a change everyone's asking "why" about.

I think her ult change will have a lesser impact on her winrate than the nerfs to the 3 other top tier ADCs. When her competition falls off AND she gets a small buff, that will certainly have a huge impact. (As a wukong main, I have a lot of experience with fluctuating winrate based on how good OTHER champs are)

I think they really just wanna see other Adc in pro play is all.
