Who would win: a selection of champions specifically designed for the support role

Or one broken (again) boi http://opgg-static.akamaized.net/images/lol/perk/8439.png Lux

This is in gameplay because it's criticism, by the way. Once again a mage is allowed to abuse this to the point they're at the very top of the ladder in a certain position because of aftershock alone, rather than champion strengths or player mechanics. Here we go again. Lissandra Ryze Galio

What annoys me the most is that Mage supports like Lux and Zyra can LITERALLY solo the entire lane even if the ADC is complete braindead.

More often than not I've seen a god awful ADC get through the laning phase just because a mage support existed in their lane, allowing them to escape every mistake they'd commit while out damaging me and my adc every time because AP items are broken garbage very reliable.

Thats literally the job of any support. Every ADC is an inting monkey, and its our job to make sure the enemy's adc ints harder.

You just proved my point further.

The job of the support is to KEEP THE ADC ALIVE, not carry the entire lane and outdamage the enemy, you're a helper, not a carry.

The adc should be doing the stomping with the help of the support, not the opposite.

That doesnt prove your point. You can make the enemy int harder by either keeping yours alive or killing theirs.

Again

"killing theirs"

dude.

You're a support, not someone who should be Killing

That's your ADC's job, you're not someone who should be outdamaging anyone like Zyra and Lux do

You're someone who sets up the kills for the ADC by CCing or shielding., not someone who does all the damage and then lets the adc lasthit.

You seem to have a very narrow view of what 'support' means. High damage mage supports usually come with fewer utility options. There is always a tradeoff. I dont see any reason why a high damage support should not be a viable option. Brings a bit more versatility to 'support' other than only enchanters and tanks allowed.

Glaricion5 votes

The job of the support is to get a gold-dependent core through the early game and then to allow your team to achieve their win condition(s) whilst thwarting the enemy's.

This can be done in various ways, and zoning and punishing bad positioning is one of them.

Also, it seems like you are saying that ADCs should be stronger than supports during laning phase.

Supports, who are picked because they can do good things, usually right away, whilst (likely) having the lowest farm priority/networth on their team.

Gold dependent carries, who are picked because they scale hard with items, and may not even be that powerful until after the mid-game skirmishes are winding down.

Mate, what?

Supports are a vibrant class with multiple tools and archetypes, they aren't just the babysitter that might as well be an extra item for the ADC.

But having a champion who can do both (looking at morgana) isn't healthy now, is it?

No, its perfectly healthy.

She can keep the target champion rooted for half an eternity while also having a huge spell shield which can block enemy spells and even ultimates. If you call a champion that has great offense while also having great defence, healthy, you are mistaken.

Teemo can blind someone for an eternity and 100-0 someone while in base wtf so op.

Yeah, anything is OP if you exaggerate what it does.

That's not true in any sense, bot-lane is a duo lane not a solo carry lane, a support mage who abuses aftershock should not be able (to abuse aftershock) dominate lane by their lonesome. [sg-lulu]

Then you clearly know nothing about bot lane then. [sg-miss-fortune]

It does not matter that it's a duo lane when supports are stronger than marksmen in the early game (with very few exceptions). The supports are the ones that set most of what happens bot lane up.

I know that Lux (a mage) shouldn't be able to abuse aftershock (a tank rune) and solo carry a lane, but you continue to think like a psychopath, [sg-kiko]

Yes and No

Depends on the ADC you're laning with.

If you're laning with a Vayne, Twitch, Kog'Maw for example then the support pretty much decides the outcome of the lane.

If you're laning with a Draven, Lucian, MF, Jhin then either of you can decide lane.

Mage supports take away all the hard bits of playing a mage mid and shouldn't exist, change my mind.

Sp33d Zer05 votes

As a bot lane you two are there to help each other. It's not one person's job to do the brunt work of the lane and the other to be the designated "helper".

The best jannas and sorakas aren't the ones who hide and heal/shield, they're the ones using the spells to harass and zone control.

Yet she maxes W first and builds item 3174 item 3107 item 3504 when she goes Support. If even after all these adaptations people still say she is a mage, when she definitely trades her Damage for Utility and Survivability, then every god damn Support with AP scalings in bottom lane is a Mage, because most of them would actually outdamage her.

IainG103 votes

To be slightly fair; I see a LOT of Lux 'Supp' players build Spellthief's then full AP. This is in Elo Hell though (I also build at least 2 of those items you mentioned because I am well aware my team has a Midlaner, and that Midlaner is not me)

Anu3isII2 votes

Yeah, checking the stats again, her Full AP build is very popular until Plat+ and fares decently currently. I thought her Supportive build was at least as popular, since it was the one that relaunched her as a Support in the bot lane with huge success.

But I guess people would rather see the world burn than protecting it xD

Considering most people fail to see the strength of an actual support Lux build and will adamantly push their Lux support to build full AP, I can see why this happens. Even my friends encourage me to build full AP after my support item, but I won't do it. Athenes is so good on her, as is Censer if you have even one or two auto attack champs. In fact, Koreans are building mid-Lux with a few support items because she falls off if she can't land roots. With Athenes, Censer or Redemption, she can support from the backline to great effect even if she can't make plays. Her team-wide shield is under-estimated.

IainG101 votes

Her team-wide shield can be over 2k HP; it makes Locket look bad. Yet people ignore it on her but rush Locket on anything with HP..... It's like they've seen that she can deal damage, so she has to build that way,. and it's simply not the case.

Anu3isII2 votes

Problem is that your teammates dodge everything, including your Shield! Locket at least is very easy to use and is in an area around you, not in a line like Lux' W.

But I agree, her W has always been underrated compared to the rest of her kit.

Most of Lux player going bot lane, play her like mid. Upgrade spellthief item to 2nd phase and go luden, into full AP. They max E and Q before taking W. The type of Lux you see happen very rarely.

Anu3isII3 votes

Checking her stats, I can see your point. From the looks of it, all tiers from Iron to Gold prefer to go full AP, as you mentioned. Tho I find it suboptimal (after all, she became a viable supp because of the build I mentioned and I find better champions at poking than her) the full AP build is the most played and only in Plat+ it sees very little Play Rate, which is a very small percentage of the playerbase.

When I made the comment I was looking only at Plat+ data. But seeing her overall stats, I can understand why people dislike her. I never liked a full AP Lux bot to be fair.

Exactly. Low elo and high elo is fairly different. I wouldnt mind a real Lux support like you mentionned but in low elo they go pure ap with the mentality" fuck the adc I will carry!". This kind of Lux players is hated the most.

Daddy ReTaric4 votes

Best way to make aftershock fair is to bring back Courage of the colossus.

Courage of the Colossus Effects Gain a shield for 3 − 54 (based on level) (+ 5% maximum health) per nearby enemy champion for 3 seconds after hitting an enemy champion with a stun, taunt, snare, or knock up. Cooldown 45 − 30 (based on level) seconds

There, number can be changed accordingly but it doesn't have AP or AD scaling so less attractive for people other than tank since it have a Max health scaling. If said champion like Lux etc would still pick it, it's a shield without resistance so it basically won't change much and won't be a good choice for them. Problem solved.

ok so i checked and she really does run this rune it seems. Ihave no idea how we got here.... but maybe getting 70 free armor and mr isn't a good idea.

Can't we just tune it to be more scaling heavy? or like half the stats for ranged users?

aside from that lux is perfectly fine as a support. she's been played in the role for ages and she gets the job done. If you're that obssessed with being an enchanter you can just build around her shield.

Or stop messing with it for others when it's a tank rune and put it on melee only (you know, where ALL the tanks are)

Or make Aftershock an actual tank rune. You know, one that gives tanks something they are lacking (HP or pseudo-HP) instead of something they already have in excess (resistances).

because we want a rune to be used on as many champs as possible? maybe it's just that it's hard to balance a rune that gives 70mr/armr on both a bruiser a tank AND an artillery mage? maybe it would be easier if that artillery mage gets less of those free stats?

but hey fuck ranged champions amiright dudes.

Mage using aftershock to do 0 damage, why do you even complain about it? Cuz its hard to 1 shot a lux with Zed, blame mage itemization. Literally mages have 1 armor items. Looks normal to me, stop bitching and find good solution like asking riot to add more mages armor items.

No, it's a complaint thread about aftershock. Lux is not the only champion who are forced to run aftershock due to its extreme efficiency.

Investa2 votes

As a Lux support I really hate the idea of taking aftershock on her. It's only done because of the tank stats it offers and that full resolve has good synergy with her kit. Guardian doesn't go well with her team-wide shield and has a longer cooldown than a similar keystone like Aery. So to go resolve primary aftershock is the only real option. If they made it melee only it'd make Guardian the only option then.

I still prefer other rune-setups, and I don't like maxing W first because then I have no damage as a poke support. W max second is way more preferable.

Can't help finding it funny though that for years Lux was considered a troll pick in support, but almost nothing has changed but the meta and what people pick then you have pros and challengers pick it and now it's way OP. I've mained her support since her release and it's been solid, granted I've never gone above a gold level.

Best option though would be some nerf of aftershock to make it less attractive on non-engage and buffing their other options. Maybe don't make the rune melee only but the tank stats melee only, and give ranged a different passive as a tradeoff.

Targon4 votes

"Can't help finding it funny though that for years Lux was considered a troll pick in support, but almost nothing has changed but the meta and what people pick then you have pros and challengers pick it and now it's way OP."

That's not true though. Over the last few years, Lux has received buff after buff after buff. Her Q cooldown used to be 15 seconds at rank 1, and now it's 10. Her W shield has been buffed significantly too (in particular, the return shield). Her E cooldown and mana cost has been reduced and the slow has been increased, and her R got a partial reset mechanic in season 7 (or 8, I can't remember). When Lulu, Janna, Orianna, and Karma got their shields nerfed after the Ardent Meta, Lux got hers buffed. The only nerf Lux has received in the last 3 years is they made her E a little bit more difficult to land.

Personally, I've thought Lux was sleeper OP for awhile now and at the very least, overtuned, and now more and more people are realizing it. In this high damage meta, Lux's kit fits perfectly, oddly enough. She has good, long ranged damage, CC, and provides a massive low cool down shield to soak up huge amounts of damage for her team. Aftershock helps prevent her from feeding in its current state too, but she's still strong with Arcane Comet and Aery too.
