Riot, please don't wait 3/4 of a season to address concerns with autofill

AhmCha··50 votes·1,712 views

If it has to stay, it has to stay, and I can live with that, but please don't ignore the discussion about it like you did with Dynamic/Solo Q. People have a lot of issues, be they reasonable or not, that need to be addressed. It would be a step in the right direction, in my humble and entirely irrelevant opinion, to acknowledge the concerns people have and provide context to your decisions.

I don't even understand the point of autofill in anything below Diamond. Were the queue times REALLY that bad before? No. Did autofill shorten them? No. Hell if anything, the queue time is actually LONGER because so many people dodge now. Riot what the fuck are you smoking?

"oh well we're doing it to improve the quality of-"

No, stop it. You're not improving it; you're making it worse.

Please fix auto fill. Nobody likes it and it is costing people games. I NEVER play ADC. I am bad at it. But I get filled into ADC. How is this an even match now????

Fix this shit fuckers.

Also, somebody else had a suggestion to add up to 4 role selections so that people who dont mind doing multiple roles may be able to help Q times without having to choose auto fill.

For example, Jimmy chooses MID only. Tom chooses MID, SUP, and TOP. And Jane chooses ADC, SUP, TOP, and JG. Just saying, pretty good idea.

They announced a while back before preseason, but everyone forgot, this is a way to prep people for what is really coming. You get to pick 2 roles you favor and 1 to exclude. Meaning, myself speaking, I could Jungle/Mid and not ADC. This would mean "Fill" actually means Top/Supp.

I remember. Where is that feature at?

Deep sixed, they tried it over in OCE and it negatively effected queue timers according to what they said. So... they killed it off. Not coming.

Damn. I missed that. Bummer.

Actually, the exclusion thing isn't coming anymore. They did some testing and found that role exclusion was negatively impacting the queue so they scrapped it.

They announced they stopped working on that feature because they tested it in another region and found that it increased queue times (everybody probably excluded support)

So, it's not coming.

Learn how to play adc?

Well, I mean, I can play it but not well enough to carry that is for sure. And I have no interest ATM to become an ADC carry god. I like my current roles and selection of champions.

Just do what I do when I get auto-filled ADC - play your main. Or at least a champion you're comfortable with, even if it isn't an ADC.

The early game won't be great, but it probably won't be worse than as an ADC you can't play well, and the late game will be much better since you can actually play that champion.

I mean for normals yes but for ranked i wouldn't feel comfortable sacrificing a ranged dps adc.

It's up to you to tell your team that you got autofilled into ADC and see if someone is willing to take the role over.

If absolutely no one on your team can play ADC at all, well...

..you're right back in the Season 5 and before queues, where that sort of thing happened all the time, even more than it does now - but everyone who complains about the new queues forgot how it was back then, when last pick on a team was always forced to autofill.

Supreme Senpai691 votes

If absolutely nobody on your team can play ADC then that team doesn't really deserve to win.

Like yeah autofill is bad but league rank is a measurement of skill at the game, not at a specific role or champion. If nobody on a team can play ADC (not good mind you, because most aren't good. Just play it without feeding hardcore.) Then they're not as good as the enemy team and shouldn't the better team win?

FourVsFive6 votes

Auto fill should be for support role only, then every one just has to learn how to play a support champ. As support champs can not carry it be the way to go. Cause no one wants a first time top lane to be feeding.

HazyCloud73 votes

I could live with that idea if it wasn't frequent. Not interested in supporting once every 3 games.

Meanie401 votes

Neither is everyone else.

You know a great solution to distributing the Support responsibility fairly?

Get rid of new champ select and go back to pick order.

On average, you and everyone else get Support a little less than 20% of the time.

HazyCloud73 votes

Can't say I agree, I think role selection was an absolutely terrific addition to the game.

SpongebobIsLife2 votes

It was, it removed a lot of the in-champion select toxicity, and made it a bit easier to climb since everyone got what they want. But I do hate autofill. There are several times where I am placed top, jungle, support. And 2 of those roles should not go to people who have no experience or very little in those roles (top and jungle).

Nameless Voice2 votes

That's a flawed argument. Support isn't somehow the "least important role" or "unable to carry".

A good support can easily carry games, and a bad support can easily anti-carry them into a loss.

The reason why autofill is primarily aimed towards support is because it's the least popular role, not because it's the least impactful.

Invexes1 votes

I'm really not keen on that idea because I like filling and that would entirely ruin the appeal. As in I enjoy playing different roles every game.

While you seem like a level-headed understanding guy, I seriously doubt that the majority of the boards community will be as receptive to an answer that they don't want to hear despite sound logic and reasoning; and i'm sure riot employees don't want to get flak from a bunch of internet fires and pitchfork mobs

I think that's part of the reason why Riot doesn't actually say anything. Or rather, they avoid speculation in an attempt to not get peoples hopes up, in the event the can't deliver. (Like how we waited an entire season just to get solo q) They also don't want their employees speculating when an official opinion hasn't even been reached.

on the other hand, Riot may not be in a rush as it's still preseason. I'd be more concerned if the ranked season started and auto fill was still having problems. But for now, they are probably taking their time in deciding how to address it.

Personally, I have no problems with Auto fill (I usually fill anyways), what I think is missing is a level of consistency. And Riot would get some level of consistency if their auto fill protection actually worked as intended. Yet I keep hearing people getting filled either a) while they were in a promotion series, b) because of a remake, or c) because someone dodged.

Fix.The.Support.Role

Seriously, if you want to get rid of autofill, this is the only way.

Riot doesn't have 36 options, they will have do it eventually.

Better do it now than wait another whole season.

Anags1 votes

If it has to stay to make the queue work then there is no discussion to be had. So if they don't say anything it's because it is necessary.

And why should they address issues people have if they are unreasonable? That is just idiotic.

Do you really need them to come out and say, "hey the queue would be a lot worse without autofill. You are just going to have to deal with it"

AtheosisX5 votes

So pointing out that in lower levels of play constant dodging has led to matchmaking not being any faster than before is stupid?

Schàdenfreude1 votes

First of all, the OP never said that they queue had to be removed. If the queue has to stay, and there are issues with it, it is essential for Riot to address this to improve quality of matches. If there are still remaining concerns then Riot can answer why so and so can't happen or something.

Second of all, if there are unreasonable posts, it should be easy to dismiss them, and would also have the effect of strengthening their position in keeping autofill.

Yeah, its called communication. It's one of the reasons season 6 sucked so bad.

Context: Less people are playing this game

Nameless Voice1 votes

They need to at least address the fact that sometimes people with support as their primarily role are being autofilled... and then other players are being autofilled into the support role on the same team. That stuff makes no sense.

Can we at least get a redistribution pass once 10 players have been found, which tries to reshuffle as many of them as possible into their primary roles?

LatetotheRace1 votes

I'm perfectly fine with preference roles. You rate your roles 1-5 favorite to least, that way the system can assign us roles that we can either enjoy-tolerate and not hate.

Solidair31 votes

I think part of dealing with this is why they are doing research into Support as a role and discovering WHY people don't want to play it. Once they determine the problems with support as a role (which is complete and total lack of agency, I suspect) then they can absolutely being looking at autofill. If support gets patched up enough that people feel motivated to play it, then autofill becomes obsolete.
