Who would you take Presence of Mind on?

KoKoboto··1 votes·9,893 views

For 5 Seconds after gaining a level-up or takedown the mana you spend on abilities is fully restored.

This seems like the worstest mastery in the game ever.

Unless Rito is making mana an issue it's difficult to justify taking any mana / resource based masteries unless you want some niche builds. Presence of Mind just seems super duper not worth it compared to Over heal and Triumph.

With the way it is worded it seems like you can't use it if you're OOM.

Only seems viable on Kassadin or AP Kog'Maw.

Dude are you serious? This rune is increible. I mean...basically any poke champion get a complete spell rotation for free 5 times within the first 10 minutes of the game.

Ahri love it Pantheon love it Sona love it Jayce OH YEAH. KogMaw WTF!!! Kassadin NOOOO!!!

5s worth of free mana only when you level up. For anyone with a brain they will notice the mastery the first time you level up and adjust from that.

Do you openly fight Aatrox or Darius at full stacks? In other words this mastery cannot be effectively used for combat through leveling. It'd might be super effective with champions like Kassadin mostly who reach ridiculous mana costs with his R but that's the only scenario I can think of that would be super worth.

Ahri, Pantheon, Sona, Jayce? Ahri doesn't need it, she builds Morellonomicon. Pantheon doesn't need it, it would be more effective for him to get some other thing. Sona builds mana regen. Jayce has had his mana costs nerfed over time so he doesn't have many mana issues. However if you do decide to go Precision it might be viable with Press the Attack. I think most people would like Triumph though because 15% missing health heal on a squishy fighter sounds great.

Nah - ahris first 6 levels are extremely mana taxing - this is where it will help you the most. Basically forced to rush lost chapter. What ahri can do with a NRL is MUCH more impressive though. So you get a free all in attempt at lvl 7 8 and 9 and youll have more damage. I think it will be go to rune for her. Later in the game it also procs off take downs. So literally throwing an auto on a champion that dies will give you mana to stay in the fight if you are out of mana. Pants mana issues are so extreme he has to build the refill potion for 500 gold. With this rune he could probably forgo that item and build a long sword or dorians blade - this will make him even more deadly in lane. Sona runs out of mana a lot and gets a lot of assists and kills - she will proc this all the time - it will give her much more sustaining power in lane and in team fights. Jayce can do a 6 spell combo for free every level and take down? WOW. And yeah - jayce has mana issues - you basically don't spend mana on him unless you have to.

Every mage in the game rushes Morellonomicon or Lost Chapter -> (insert other item here). Except for the few that are heavily gated by mana and just go for tear builds. NRL...? NLR* Needlessly Large Rod. Again every champion does the same. Now that Morellonomicon is established being great on every single champion and that every champion needs it I can dismantle your justifications for this mastery.

Morellonomicon is too overloaded to go for non-morellonomicon builds. Skipping on Morellonomicon is not an option, you can adjust your build but at the end of the day Morellonomicon cannot be avoided.

100ap (higher than everything except luden's and rabaddons.) 20% CDR grevious wounds 20% missing mana regen on kills 400 mana

As for your all-in attempts and "deadlyness" I already addressed them in the same comment.

Pantheon doesn't need that mastery. Going for corrupting potion is fine and gives him burn damage for trades. People will play around him leveling up as I said with Aatrox or Darius mechanics. He can get a better rune like domination path or sorcery path mix ups for better stuff. Or Triumph which is always viable on champions that get into the thick of things like Pantheon.

Sona only runs out of mana in lane phase. Afterwards when you build 3 mana regeneration items you no longer run out of mana unless you're a monkey.

Jayce... Apply the same logic to Aatrox, Darius, Riven, Gangplank... Don't buzz into the light. As for his mana issues. His mana cost on his abilities got reduced awhile ago, most noticeable the one on his acceleration gate. A lot of Jayce players don't build tear now for a reason, they don't need to with proper resource management.

uhm... Veigar Swain Ryze Cassiopeia and some more - lol! That rune is actually strong on certain champs.

Hey EVERYTIME you level up you can go ALL OUT with no drawback! This is great.

I mean - just look at Cassio - what exactly holds her back? The lack of DMG? Hell NO! The fact you run OOM after 3Es in laning! But with this.... Every level up your opponent better RUNS or dies!

I change my mind:

That Rune is actually BUSTED! yay... another secondary to choose from... AH.. can I get like 5 more minutes in champselect??? D:

KoKoboto1 votes

Well Cassiopeia already has strength in lane and doesn't have mana issues realistically. Only people who don't know how to farm with E have mana problems with her. If the mastery is being used as a crutch than for good players there will always be a better option.

After you first level up the enemy should be able to tell what you're doing much like how players react to Aatrox hellbent, Darius Noxian might, Jax 3 auto attacks, Katarina daggers, and a bunch of other prompts. Leveling up is equally or perhaps even more noticeable than these other mechanics and the enemy should adjust.

Swain doesn't have mana issues early either. You only get mana mechanic on kill so if you don't get the kill you're not getting mana. Also for champions like Swain and Cassiopeia more value could come out of Overheal.

Unless you're going for a different build that focuses on different items and avoids mana items Presence of Mind is a TRAP.

Titanium701 votes

And how exactly a Darius would feel getting max stacks for free every few minutes during laning? 5s of free zoning or getting a trade heavily in your favor is kinda stupid.

Especially Cassios Level spikes will be ridiculous. Same for Ryze or even Fizz!

Or on Swain - right now I have to tap out of Ult as soon as I score a kill to not drain my mana completely - this rune allows me to stay transformed for another 5 seconds for free which is HUGE, on lane in skirmishes AND Teamfights!

You dont even have to use it aggressive. Depending on when you level up you can easily use this free mana to clear the rest of the wave completely outpushing someone who doesnt have it.

This rune is definitely one the strongest so far and I dont expect it to even hit live as it is.

Additionally, Leveling up is something you can time perfectly for your selfe, but the oponnet has to guess when exactly it will happen - just seeing "oh levelup" and than back off wont work since the second the level pops the opponent is already in position to attack you.

You're underestimating this rune by far!

This rune seems once more like a take, or die kind of choice just like the original phase rush.

Welp I don't think 5s is that much tbh. Yes in this meta small moments result in a lot more but in this case it's not enough to warrant a rune slot in my opinion. Of course, that is the benefit of this new rune system. People aren't running clear cut things anymore and that's why this new system is better.

I don't see the strength in it and I probably will never feel the value of it but I guess you and all the people who downvoted me can. That is fine.

Titanium701 votes

Well - nothing to worry about - it's already gone. ^^ Didn't last long tbh. xD

KoKoboto1 votes

They took down all runes but put them back up. Presence of Mind hasn't been changed from what is was before:

For 5 Seconds after gaining a level-up or takedown the mana you spend on abilities is fully restored.

KingDanius

You were right, they did not put it live as it was on PBE.

Instead they increased the duration from 5 to 7 seconds :)

I think that you've never played Cassiopeia before, or against a good one, and that you didn't even try to think precisely about this mastery. This mastery is basically the end of mana problems in early game for Cassio. You do not seem to realize that her E costs 40 mana lvl 2, which is 10% of her mana pool. If you clear the first wave, you have one more minion to last hit before getting lvl 2. If your opponent doesn't respect you enough, you can kill him lvl 2 without spending any point of mana. You do realize that, in 5 seconds, she can Q + 3 E + Q + E you ? A Cassio can already get you out of lane lvl 2. The problem is, if she does that, she spends all her mana and cannot play the lane anymore herself. An even funnier fact : you set all the minions to low life before your level up, and last hit with your E during the 5 sec with Presence of Mind activated : -> You last hit, so the mana spent is restored, as it is how Twin Fangs works. -> You have Presence of Mind on, so the mana is also restored.

Basically, you last hit with E and your mana is restored of the E's cost. Not only you do not lose mana. You regen mana. When last hitting.

Nah, this mastery is obviously incredibly strong for Cassiopeia.

For Ryze, it can be, as you can Q W Q E Q freely, but that would require to be in closer range than Cassio, and it wouldn't be as easy to force a trade, while Cassio can stand between you and your minions to deny you and kill you if you want to last hit ( as she already can, but no one does it except in some specific matchups because of the mana problem, which is now irrelevant ).

What you want to look for, anyways, are champions with very high mana costs and low CD that would like to trade you early on but cannot because of mana problems. Here are some :

Cassiopeia ( Q + E spam ), Taliyah (W E Q ), Viktor ( W E Q ), Lucian ( E 2AAQ 2AA W 2AA ), Kayle ( Q W E ), Azir ( W E Q W, you cannot lose trade actually ), Jayce ( Range forme E + Q W R W Q 3AA E )...

All of them could be played with the Precision Tree as a second rune tree, so it wouldn't even be a sacrifice compared to the Domination or Inspiration tree.

KoKoboto1 votes

Sure. If you want more strength early game you can go for that. Just know that it is difficult to use against players who know how masteries work. You don't fight Aatrox with full stacks, you don't fight Darius with full stacks, you don't fight Anivia near tentacles, you don't fight Cassiopeia if she landed poison, you don't fight Annie if she has a stun, you don't fight Yorick if he has 3 Graves up, you don't chase Singed, you don't fight Cassiopeia or Ryze when they level.

Mathematically a lot of things work but then you need to think about gameplay and Realize that a lot of things don't actually work. Basically the item because void later on because you will have mana items and never have mana problems. So if you take this item you're only using it for early game.

The only champions that take full advantage of it are AP Kog'Maw and Kassadin who have insane mana costs throughout the entire game.

Here's a game where I went Presence of Mind AP Kog'Maw. Holy shit.

Champions that take item 3070 may be the target here.

KoKoboto1 votes

Once you finish those items you never run out of mana!

ChiTenshi1 votes

Who said the rune was designed to be effective the whole match?

It helps when stacking the item. May also be useful to those who build item 3508 when they need the early game mana.

KoKoboto1 votes

I don't think that's worth. Most champions don't have mana issues at all early unless they're spamming super hard early or are designed to be gated early.

ChiTenshi1 votes

I don't think runes are designed to be viable options to all champions.

Niche champions require niche runes.

KoKoboto1 votes

I agree.

The thing is when I say most champions I mean all champions. Mana hasn't been an issue for anyone really unless you suck ass at managing mana. Since the end of season 5 Rito has gradually removed mana management from the game. By increasing mana regeneration and by lowering mana costs through time.

When I think about the champions that must build mana because that's how their late game power is gated. Cassiopeia, Ryze, Anivia, Kassadin, AP Kog'Maw... I'm thinking they would not even use the Precision Path.

For casters like these people it would almost always be a mix of Sorcery / Domination and maybe some Inspiration depending on the player. Presence of Mind is a trap.

Escheton1 votes

Might be fun for a bad Singed that almost runs oom at lvl 1, then goes for the lvl 2 cheeky ghost fling anyways, but would otherwise run oom for his poison... Or similar shticks.

Xenomancers1 votes

The idea here is you don't have to build morello first or more specifically - lost chapter. You could go item 1058 and rush for item 3285 which is a much better roaming item that does more damage. This is a laning rune that will help champions clear wave without spending mana. It can be used aggressively to try for kills as well. You also can't play around champion leveling - You'd be playing back ALL GAME. I can see it being useful on a lot of supports to.

KoKoboto1 votes

There's not enough chances to make it useful as a laning rune.

First off it's only when you level up. Next it's only 5s of unlimited spells, most spells have a CD higher than 5s. So on most champions you will only get one spell rotation when you level up. After that one rotation you're back to no mana.

Everyone can try to use it aggressively but as I said, Aatrox, Darius, Riven, Katarina.

Supports build mana regeneration. Also going into precision secondary really sucks overall for supports. You can't effectively use Legendary, you don't use Cut Down, Coup, or Last Stand, the only support thing is Triumph but it's in the same slot as Presence of Mind. Better off going Sorcery with mana band if you wanna do resource based things.

If you don't get kills or level up, especially later on, you're gonna be OOM. Cannot avoid going Morellonomicon in a ton of cases.

Xenomancers1 votes

According to the runes info this isn't even how it works. It says that you gain stored mana for attacking champions and structures that you gain when you get a kill or assist. Honestly that is much weaker.

Use this website. It's from surrender @ 20 and updates faster than league website.

For 5 Seconds after gaining a level-up or takedown the mana you spend on abilities is fully restored.

This is what it does^ The older version was weaker. This new version is still weak. This mastery is a complete TRAP.

Hmm. I may try it on some mana hungry mages.
