looking at katarina's kit you'd expect ad
but no
she's ap. she throws magic knives everywhere. even talons hovering beyblades that home in after he becomes invisible and teleports isnt magic. but no, katarina needs magic to do the same
i think shed be gamebreaking

Katarina also had phases where her build was 
due to her AD ratios being strong enough to merrit going AD over AP with an extreemly similar kit to the one she currently has, and building nothing but AD makes you an AP champ regardless of doing physical or magical damage in my book.

Honestly Katarina would probably be worse in most respects. AD scaling is great if you have AA resets, AA steroids, or just want some power in a drawn out 1v1 through auto-attacks. Considering Kat's kit is pretty heavy in the AoE focus, the nature of her skills prevents her from easily adding an AA in her combo, and her manaless/spam-happy nature allows great synergy with spell-hit items: Kat doesn't have a whole lot to gain with an AD itemization path assuming the bulk of her damage was flipped to physical. She just wouldn't benefit that much from her auto-attacks hurting.
Also worth nothing armor is usually ~35%~50% higher on all champions than MR for the vast majority of a game, making physical ability damage almost always worse than magical ability damage in terms of, well, doing damage. While in past seasons you could reverse this with superior armor pen itemization: this season M Pen itemization is obviously superior, so magic damage is just better in regards to a QWER combo.

Fawksea1 votesthink of it like this, zed and talon are early-mid game monsters (lets not think if they're fed or not, lets just assume they have one kill and decent farm) they do a shit ton of damage and assassinate but they try to hit one person only katarina on the other hand is a mid-late game magic damage monster who relies on killing someone and quickly going for a kill on another target all while doing aoe with her abilities if she were ad she'd destroy lane but maybe be weaker in fights later into the game. or not
Tohob1 votesher entire history as a champion would be completely different. there was once a time when AD mids weren't a thing: if you were an AD champion, you were either ADC, top, or jungle. if you were a melee that limits you to top and jungle. but, 
doesn't fit into the top or jungle roles very well at all. as an assassin, she's better as a mid than anything else, so she would most likely have been considered as a trollpick and a terrible top laner for so long, that she'd be unplayable right now due to getting constantly reported by your team for even picking her.
