Vel'koz in the nalcs

Velkoz was picked repetitively in the last games of the season Clg Huhi picked him a couple of times vs immortals and Jensen picked him vs tsm in a bunch of games as well

I was very disappointed to see one of my favourite champions underutilized so much by professional players :

Huhi played him pretty badly Choosing to ult unresearched targets that were squishy backline champs He showed little knowledge of velkoz combo capabilities and I can't remember him procing his passive often and whenever he did ,it didn't seem deliberate

Disappointing were also his choices in items: rabadons 2nd item is pretty bad imo , since he only had 100 ap from morello to multiply with the items passive, usually a utility item like ludens or rylais or zhonias is prioritized before death cap. He then proceeded to get a void staff and Sorc shoes . This is just too much penetration for a champion that does so much true damage. He then went for a haunting guise -_-

It seems huhi was still playing the old vel'koz :(

Jensen on the other hand seemed a little bit more on point with the new velkoz . Mostly throwing combos together and ulting researched forontliners to obliterate them with the true damage beam. His itemization was a little bit better too. Going ludens after morello and buying cdr boots instead of sorc shoes. He still got a void staff pretty early though. Jensen showed significant difficulty in landing skillshots and positioning in fights , struggling to kite back the triforce tank Ekko , which he often ended up diying to.

In conclusion both mid laners showed poor understanding of the champions kit, were unable to exert any kind of Lane pressure vs the short Ranged Cassiopeia they were supposed to counterpick , and mindlessly spammed skillshots in fights , often missing.

Now I understand huhi and Jensen are not the best midlaners (especially huhi) but they really disappointed me with their playtyle of the champion.

The key to playing velkoz correctly is being methodical, patient , accurate and anticipating your opponents next move before you make yours. Hopefully someone like bjergsen or faker will make the most out of the champion if they ever pick him .

i always get my hopes up when i see vel koz in the LCS because i love him.

but its fundamentally wrong to save your E for peel when playing vel koz, you have to use it often to either clear the wave W all 6, E the back line, and Q the front 3 and boom wave is gone. (LCS pros often use both charges of W to clear a wave, which is wrong because they often miss CS) AND they wont have any charges at all when a fight breaks out.

or use it offensively and go after your enemy laner, i guarantee you will teal metric tons of damages if you just land your E on them.

vel koz is weak if you dont get your combos off, they just have trouble landing E, or his E gets flashed outright and vel koz dies.

this is very true and i dont know why its getting downvotes. the only pen item you would want on vel'koz now would be item 3151 becuase it goes great with item 3116 . it helps alot due to that dot shredding tanks.

Good point even tho I just prefer to just maximize ap so that passive and ulti do as much true damage as possible . Thanks for the reply

well it kinda depends man. if my teams carry or jungle is super fed i wont go for full damage ill try to focus down the tanks. however if my team needs a carry and im the most fed defintely going full ap.

Good point . To be honest I don't play velkoz very often in ranked even tho I cansider him my main midlaner and have mastered his playtyle. I keep him as an ace up my sleeve for those Pesky promos. Whenever I do play him I end up doing very well and carrying damage wise .

heres a tip if you didnt know for vel'koz. if you get into a fight against any mobile melee champ. save that e for when they get on you. dont try and land it at a distance.

"expect" them to get on you. cuz you have no mobility. so just poke with q. and wombo combo them when you land that e on yourself.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only that plays like that. Velkoz e is a defensive ability ( hence the knock back) and is extremely effective when used defensively. I always hold on to it for as long as I can before throwing my combo.
