What is Illaois job/role in a team fight? Builds?

It feels like laying the smack down on the ADC isnt excactly something she can do because of how easily she's kited. Obviously I want to focus them especially if said marksmen is actually doing damage/fed, but it sounds easier than it looks. I still think she's an awesome team fighter and such, but I can't figure out what the hell i should be doing in team fights exactly, or whether I should be engaging.

It seems like if your team decides to retreat when you'e playing her there is no turning back. I generally have to ask my team to trust me and just stick with the team fight because of how well illaoi can tank (should I even be building her tanky? I go Steraks/cleaver > tank.) It feels like actually teamfighting is a huge struggle against teams with a good mixture of range.

Ive been wanting to main her forever but I personally i feel like Illaoi's W's range is whats causing the problem of actually getting to who you want to 'Slam.' It's probably just me. She seems like she's only strong against and on certain comps. I've been told previously that the works well on counter engage comps but I barely know hat that means and I thought that Illaoi wanted to ult as many people as possible? Plus If we're waitng to counter engage wouldn't I just get poked down/ all my tentacles destroyed?

Anyways, I'm actually pretty good with her considering my division as I play her somewhat like Heim where I want to force people to fight in MY zone, and I've actually learned how to kite with her. (Sounds wierd but I've kited multiple champions from 2nd outer blue turret > red turret and turned the chase into a kill even when I've fed them.) I think she's a beautifully made champion and I love her playstyle and strengths but I really for the love of me can't figure out what her role is. Although she's one of my best champions she's the one I struggle to win with the most. I would never take her in ranked because of this even though she is one of my best top laners (mechanics wise). I'd rather not play Irelia every game even though I've probably had the most experience with her. I don't know if riot giving her tentacles slows was a good or unhealthy change when that was on the PBE but it did sound as if not getting kited to shit even by immobile marksmen like Twitch would not be as much of a problem. Help? I want her to carry me out of Bronze.

I'd imagine she'd be best in a team comp where the enemy team was expected to engage on you or where you already had some aoe lockdown from other party members such as Amumu Galio Kennen Sejuani Leona Lissandra Gnar Annie JarvanIV Sion Sona Taric Alistar Malphite (obv some will be better than others but you get the idea).

Ilaoi isn't a tank, rather a bruiser

The reason why people are iffy about her is that she isn't really that good in team fights unless she finds a way to get a good ult off, in which case she insta-wins. I think you're supposed to play her a bit like an assassin in team fights: Wait for the engage, then run in and ult when they're all clumped. With that in mind I don't think she's the best pick for carrying yourself, you generally want someone that can just force things to happen through mobility or hard CC.

Still, you can make anything work eventually. Top tip for kiting, don't underestimate Randuins. That active can really help against kiting, and people forget about it :P

The easiest way to use her is as counterengage. Just sit near your backline, throw out some Es and wait for the enemie to engage and punish their melees for entering your domain. She's strognest if she can get multiple members with her ult and then fight near the tentacles. Her lack of mobillity makes it really hard to get into the opposing team, but force the opposing team to engage on you, this isn't a big problem anymore. Also, don't try to focus on the backline(unless it's somehow easy to reach), rather help your backline to deal with their frontline. With her overall high damage and the %health on her W she'll smash the frontline rather fast.

Playing more pro active needs a ceratain setup and much more coordination with the team. If you have a cc-heavy dive buddy, trying to get a flank onto a priority target is a good thing to do, as illaoi has all the damage need to take down a target, she just needs someone to lock them down. And once the carrie are gone, illaoi can clean the rest rather easily, but without a buddy to reliable lock down the target you will usually not have that much succes this way(well, for getting our of bronze it might work as kiteing and peeling usually isn't much of a thing there comapred to higher elos) Useing her together with an aoe cc setup for wombos also can work, the aoe damage potential with her ult into tentakill is massive if your oponents are stuck in the area, though her lack of mobillity and somewhat delayed damage require either flash or alot cc for that.

For items, i really like iceborn on her, she has alot base ad for the proc, and the slow makes it hard for your opponents to avoid the tentacles. And cdr+mana to spam your skills doesn't hirt on her either. I'd generally recomand 2 tank items into black cleaver, usually iceborn+SV, going for more tankiness after that. You can go more agressive, but that makes teamfighting really hard. Offensive builts usually focus on splitpushing and getting picks with her E rather than big fights as you die to fast if cced/focused.
