I'm half tempted to downvote you just because of that Riven comment.

In any case, and taking recent posts into consideration, you're likely initially being downvoted because some people don't think Garen should be buffed. Some think he's a beginner champ who shouldn't be viable higher up, where as others think he's too strong already considering how easy he is.

As a long time Garen main I recognize his low skill level strength, but I also recognize that he struggles outside of that low skill level. People with years of experience under their belts can make him work, but recent changes have made things harder and harder on him.

I would love to see some changes that allow him to be more competitive at higher skill levels without negatively adjusting him at the lower ranks, but I'll settle for some small compensation buffs or quality of life changes. He doesn't really need to be stronger after all, he just needs some of his rougher areas smoothed out.

not downvoting because garen is easy, downvoting because garen is way more toxicthan riven

passive = avoid being engaging and fun to heal Q = ignore some attempts from enemies to be engaging, and run away even faster W = be rewarded even more for building to be non-engaging and unfun E = just a damage ability, this is fine R = an execute so even if you are bad and non-engaging you can still run in and pick up a kill to feel good about yourself i.e. keep anyone from taking any risks against you

Dude you're unranked... You act like Garen is an uncounterable OP champion..

If you ever even reach silver+, you will change your opinion on Garen...

ScissorsNstuff1 votes

it doesn't matter if I'm ranked or not. This is matter of design and you are clearly too busy playing your little computer games to take an unbiased look at a plainly obvious toxic element.

Or perhaps you don't understand the difference between toxic and OP.

OP destroys matchups Toxic destroys game franchises and drags balance in an ugly direction.

A champ that is dealing too much damage is OP A champ that wins by encouraging people not to play is toxic

A champ that wins too much is OP A champ that wins by being non-interactive and unfun is toxic

Whether or not you yourself are like this when you play garen is irrelevant. The design encourages something toxic and buffs just open more doors for such toxic behavior. The ranked sticker you hold for playing your videogames is of no value in this regard. Someone who's never played the game before could tell you this if they knew the first thing about game design.

Garen being "toxic" is exactly the reason he needs reworked AGAIN, but this time not half-assed so he isn't garbage the better you become with him.

correct, he does need to be reworked. As opposed to buffed.

Everything you say is invalid, Riot already said that he does need help, they just don't know when will they do something for him.

This is true. Garen will never be viable past plat unless his numbers are stupid.

Compared to the other juggernauts the only thing he brings is a harder wall of health to crack. Sure, he's the tankiest juggernaut bar a full tank Mordekaiser, but who cares when Darius and Illaoi do more damage to entire teams as well as single targets, while having a larger threat radius and more utility?

OxyPoro1 votes

Garen is a fine and fair champion and considerably easier to play around as he actually heavily indicates his intent of play unlike BS Riven who just jumps on you from a good distance, dump everything on you and walks away without you being able to trade back because you didn't pick a counter and had the odacity to CS outside of tower range.

redniwediS2 votes

You're funny. If you last long enough around here you'll learn, and you'll look back on this and laugh at yourself.

Come up with a more descriptive word than toxic, then we'll talk.

ScissorsNstuff2 votes

If I last long enough? I've probably been here longer than you have if you think toxic is not the most accurate term to give. That or you just don't pay attention.

But if you need something more descriptive,

garen's kit violates five out of six of riot's last known primary design values of league of legends

Mastery - mastering garen has proven to be unrewarding for anyone wanting to play him seriously in higher ranks. You can argue this is a matter of opinion but if you do you're just bullshitting yourself

Meaningful Choices - Garen ignores much of your damage and just heals it off by avoiding you. And yes, sustain as a whole makes meaningful choices difficult which is why riot has spent the past four years trying to keep sustain under tighter control even going so far as to double the cost of vampiric scepter and completely remove the old hextech revolver as well as will of the ancients. Garen is an artifact from a much more toxic age where laning phase could go past the 40 minute mark.

Counterplay - Garen has no resource, he gets free defense, he heals for free without any interaction, even if you do engage him and start to do well he is able to pull out and run away fairly easily only to come back just as strong as before moments later. Even if you can deal with him, if you happen to get too many kills he now punishes you for success. For the most part garen's counterplay mostly just involves being a ball of stats to beat him with which is also again bad for the game

Teamplay - garen does nothing with his team, oftentimes he's encouraged to just split off and zzrot or something or just go chase some champ. Garen is not a team player. None of his cc is really team utility. He isn't that team dependent and doesn't offer much to his team aside from just being another body with some damage to spare. Yes, you can force anything to work with a team but garen doesn't encourage this at all and considering there's now a mastery that rewards garen with more defense when he's alone that's even more motivation to avoid this. Theres one for offence too..

Clarity - unless you buy, play and study garen there is nothing ingame to really clarify what his abilities are doing to you. In garen's case this refers primarily to hidden power in his ult, passive, E, and possibly his W. I'll have to go to the third party reference site to check on his W again.

and thus buffing garen is not a terribly wise move especially if buffing him does not make a positive contribution despite his toxicity whereas riven is an aggressive and engaging champ and thus can be buffed (or nerfed, doing either to garen is problematic in its own way)

redniwediS2 votes

Toxic is not remotely an accurate term simply because it has no agreed upon definition outside of describing player behavior. That is why I asked you for another term, since there are plenty of more precise terms that can get your point across.

I disagree with a fair bit of what you're saying here, particularly since most of what you're doing here is listing strengths without properly weighing the weaknesses they are balanced by, but unfortunately I don't have the time right now for a full reply. Until then I can at least say we agree on one thing; that a straight up buff is too much for Garen.

Toxic is not remotely an accurate term simply because it has no agreed upon definition outside of describing player behavior.

untrue, it can also be used to describe champions that encourage toxic gameplay. There are various forms. For example a very well known form of this is lee sin and his feast or famine style power curve.

That is why I asked you for another term, since there are plenty of more precise terms that can get your point across.

toxic should be perfectly fine for anyone commenting on "lasting around here." Toxic is the term used here to describe champs that do not meet the mentioned criteria.

Weaknesses are irrelevant, this isn't a strategic discussion, this is a design discussion.

Like I said before

OP destroys matchups Toxic destroys game franchises and drags balance in an ugly direction.

A champ that is dealing too much damage is OP A champ that wins by encouraging people not to play is toxic

A champ that wins too much is OP A champ that wins by being non-interactive and unfun is toxic

toxic is not about balance, toxicity and balance are two almost entirely different things. Opness is a form of toxicity but toxicity can exist independently from OPness. Weaknesses are irrelevant, there is only what the champ encourages.

The original question, that I was answering, was "why didn't garen get buffed" and this is the answer. Naturally, when answering a question about design decision you must first look at it from a design perspective not a gamer perspective.

redniwediS4 votes

Weaknesses are irrelevant, this isn't a strategic discussion, this is a design discussion.

This is simply false. Power budgets are part of both designing and balancing champions and have nothing to do with strategy. Power budgets allow for champions with stronger weaknesses to have stronger strengths, and for champions with few weaknesses it requires that they have few strengths. This is not even remotely irrelevant.

Now, toxic has a number of meanings. Many people throw it out as a blanket term to describe anything they dislike, as a synonym to broken. You did not offer enough context to show whether you were that type of person or not. There are easy to use synonyms for the other uses of toxic, so requesting that you differ your vocabulary doesn't seem like that harsh of a request.

Now, you offered two points that describe when a champion is toxic. The first, if it applied to Garen, would require that he encourages people not to play, likely due to being unable to play against him. In this particular case you could use the word oppressive instead of the word toxic.

Unfortunately for your argument Garen is not oppressive. He has very little range outside of his base auto attack range, no gap closer, movement speed that has been both directly and indirectly nerfed recently, and had a fair portion of his early game shifted to the tacked on nonsense of his villany passive. His only CC has been reduced in duration for counterplay reasons and he has no reasonable amount of sustain for a champion of his type until level 11. His kit is one of the most straight forward kits in the game, with both it's strengths and weaknesses clearly visible to anyone attempting to learn the matchup. This is not the description of a champion who overwhelms his opponents, particularly early on. Oppressive is not an accurate word.

Your second point would state that Garen is not interactive in lane, and is "unfun". I'm going to ignore the unfun part because fun is purely a matter of opinion, with different people enjoying different things. For you he may be unfun, even though I enjoy facing a skilled Garen in lane.

Ignoring the fact that Garen literally has a passive that can be turned off if interacted with by an opposing player, I have to say I somewhat agree. Garen is supposed to be a very reliable champion, with little play making ability of his own but the power to punish an opponent if they make a mistake. While I wouldn't exactly say this design idea inherently supports non-interactive gameplay I do think players who do not properly understand the risk/reward ratio when facing Garen might feel forced into a far more defensive playstyle than is necessary. This is purely a matter of players lacking required knowledge, which is a much larger issue that Riot needs to fix.

Now, during the Juggernaut update Riot pushed Garen away from his old reliable self and toward something more flashy. They added something to him that did not perfectly mesh with his kit while removing things that do. Whether or not a champion should be built around the idea of being a known constant is a matter of debate, a debate that would seem to put Riot and I on opposing sides. That said champions who focus more on reliability than a feast or famine playstyle are not inherently more or less interactive than their counterparts. Garen does not force you into playing a particular way more than any other champion who fill similar roles. He simply does, and should do it, in a way that gives less reward for doing it well and less risk when doing it poorly. To call Garen non-interactive is to call all similar champions the same thing, and is a claim that will have to be properly supported.

TLDR:

  1. To talk about strengths without talking about the accompanying weaknesses is to completely ignore what design and balance are about.
  2. Toxicity is a blanket term, not a word that accurately describes what you're talking about. It has multiple meanings, and each of those meanings have synonyms that could be used instead.
  3. Do not answer the OP in a reply to someone else. It's bad style and causes confusion. Make a new comment thread, or if you use chronological view just make a post without replying to anyone. Otherwise you're not responding to the OP, you're responding to someone else, and as such you should make an attempt to stay on their topic.

Now I actually do have some time to reply to that earlier post, so I'll quickly touch on the different design values you believe Garen is violating.

Mastery - As a long time Garen main I can assure you it is not unfulfilling to master him. There is a rather large difference between something being unfulfilling and simply being less fulfilling that other options, after all. What he lacks in mechanics he makes up for in reliably being able to handle knowledge based matchups.

Once you learn how to apply him to a situation you can do so again and again, with little variation. He is a point of stability in a game where you never know how your lanes will go. His win rate per games played is not fantastic, but it does show a direct correlation with between games played and increased win rate, which should be expected from any champion who allows for some level of mastery. I don't know where you got your information, but I recommend a second source.

Meaningful Choices - Both Garen and his opponents have many choices to make in game. Garen must decide what role he will fill in his team. If he is to be a primary damage dealer he will have to accurately judge which enemy champions will be a primary damage threat to him. Some opponents will do well, some will not. Some opponents will decide to focus him down, where as others would rather ignore him and get more value from their abilities on Garen's weaker allies. If Garen chooses incorrectly he will not only be easy to focus down, but due to how easy it is to kite him he will be all but useless without changing his entire build path.

Garen can also decide to be a secondary damage dealer, a bodyguard, and secondary initiator. He must decide between focusing on split pushing, team fighting, and roaming for picks. He must decide whether it's best for him to look for low risk fights and give his team a numbers advantage, or if he should throw his life away to help secure more difficult victories. His ult makes him particularly suited for the latter option.

Garen's opponents, on the other hand, must decide what to do with him. If he builds too much tank he can safely be ignored in lane, allowing them to farm up and prepare for later stages of the game. If he builds too much damage they must decide, should they gain a lead, whether to further their lead or suppress Garen further. Do you rush his tower down in an attempt to keep him useless, or do you stall things out and allow him to only get experience? Do you roam after the tower falls and allow him to catch up, or do you stick with him and force other enemies to assist him?

Each choice has a trade off with a risk attached to it. Each choice can lead to a very different outcome. If this is not what it means to have meaningful choices I simply don't know what a meaningful choice is.

Counterplay - All you did here was complain. You listed strengths and ignored weaknesses as any random complaint post would do. Maybe next time you can do more than write a collection of "what if" complaints. I suggest looking at individual cases where counterplay should exist but does not. At least then there will be something that can be directly replied to.

Teamplay - I don't think you're properly understanding what Riot means by teamplay. Split pushing is a type of team play, after all, and is not typically thought of as such. Good split pushing requires the entire team moving as one, with the split pushing force contesting objectives at the same time as the rest of the team. Do this correctly and it forces the enemy team to decide between the objectives. Do it poorly and one side dies without a meaningful trade in objectives.

Teamplay only means you are playing a given role that assists your team. You're not a lone player fighting off an entire team. This is not a point that directly effects champions, other than deciding what roles they are naturally skilled at given their kits. That Dev Blog was not only about champions after all, but rather League as a whole. To say Garen lacks "teamplay" is to simply misunderstand what Riot was saying.

Clarity - Only Garen's W has possible hidden power. Everything else about him is incredibly straight forward and easy to understand. You mention needing to use a third party site, but that's not a problem with Garen. That's a problem with how Riot handles providing champion information to players.

If you haven't stopped reading by now I bet you either skipped to the end or really just don't care what I'm saying. You're likely just going to pick my post apart and find the little things you think you can argue about. You'll ignore the points I tried to make and focus only on little inconsistencies where my personal experience with Garen is displayed rather than global trends, or you'll focus on your own personal opinion instead. You're not actually here to talk about Garen after all, and so all I can say is have a good evening. I'm done getting into extended arguments with people who have absolutely no interest in taking the opinions of others into account in an attempt to grow as a person themselves (probably not true, but at least I can hope I'll actually stop getting into this nonsense). You and I are done here.

All pretty good points. I wish I thought of half this stuff.

I personally like the villain mechanic to make sure that his damage doesn't fall off lategane, But now I have stuff to respond back to people when they tell me that Garen is a brain-dead/ no skill champ.

redniwediS1 votes

Personally I liked it better back when he did, technically, fall off. Falling off has always just been a term used to describe not properly knowing how to adjust a champion for new game stages. Anyone who puts time and effort into a champion will know how to adjust their style of play to prevent themselves from being less useful.

That's all it's about after all. Damage, defense, and other things will always fall off on certain champions, but if you know how to be just as useful as you were before you'll never let your champion as a whole fall off. The villain mechanic is nice and all, but it takes away from that old level of mastery that separated the good Garen players from the bad.

I've played Garen since season 1, and while some points I make are disagreed upon by other Garen mains here on the boards I do try to put all my knowledge and personal experience out there from time to time. If you ever see Garen related posts by a guy named Critmaster Garen take his word at face value too, he probably knows even more about our favorite champion than I do.

TyrekGoldenspear3 votes

Okay, clearly you are listing strengths only with no thought to his weaknesses.

Plenty of players used him to climb to diamond and beyond.

Early game Garen is not tanky. You need time and items to make that happen. Ranged top laners can make life miserable for him, and Kayle is about as direct a counter as you can make. Plenty of tip laners have better sustain than him. Trundle and Cho'Gath heal off of minions, they will be at full health way faster then Garen will be during laning. Olaf and Darius can straight up out sustain and duel him to a standstill.

Garen has to farm to get his "free defenses". Garen has a pretty big gate called cool downs. Have you ever seen a Garen in a teamfight after he burned all his cooldowns? He's not going to do much for a few seconds, and those seconds are all the enemy team needs to pull out a victory. He has a very glaring weakness. He is a short ranged melee. Unlike most other melees that get a gap closer or some kind of poke, Garen has nothing. His only sphere of influence is right in front of him, so don't you think he should be strong there? Strong CC murders him, and worse than most champs because he is immobile, no dashes like Irelia, no blinks like Talon. His method of engage is to run at you. You can't miss CC at point blank.

Garen can split push yes, but he is also an invaluable resource in a team fight. He's the guy you want morg to black shield so he can run past everyone and murder the enemy carry. He is a Juggernaut, therefore he has enough damage for the enemy to fear and therefore burn most of their spells stopping him. He's a vanguard for you carries to attack without fear of retaliation becuase they will have to deal with an angry Garen if they do.

Really? There are way more complicated champs than Garen. His Q silences and removes slows, his W gives him damage reduction and stacking defenses (to a cap) his e spins to deal damage, and his ult marks the villain and makes his e and AAs do extra damage to the villain. His ult does true damage to the villain.

Look, any champion can seem insurmountable but there is always a way.

Okay, clearly you are listing strengths only with no thought to his weaknesses.

Correct.

If you want to talk about his weaknesses then historically he has won games by sitting out the earlygame and stalling through it WHICH IS ONCE AGAIN TOXIC and part of the reason potion master garen was nerfed away.

again, strengths and weaknesses are nearly irrelevant, I'm not discussing champion strength with you. It doesn't matter if he is balanced or not, the question isn't "why isn't garen balanced" its "for what reason did garen not get buffed"

Plenty of players used him to climb to diamond and beyond.

and plenty of players find that he is a burdensome thing to use beyond silver.

None of which makes him any less toxic. Having no earlygame is not healthy and buffing this would lead to a buff to the consistency of a strong mid and lategame which are toxic therefore making any buff to this toxic which goes back to why garen wasn't buffed.

It doesn't matter what his winrate is It doesn't matter if he's balanced or not It doesn't matter how much you weigh his strengths and weaknesses against each other

Garen has to farm to get his "free defenses".

incorrect, he has to put points in his W by standing within experience range of dying minions. He could do this from inside a bush if he wanted and denying this to him is not practical in many cases.

I am not offering any opinion on where garen SHOULD or SHOULD NOT be strong. The fact garen doesn't get to play during his cooldowns is another sign that he is riddled with design issues. Again reason not to simply buff him.

You can fix UP with buffs You can fix OP with nerfs You cannot fix toxic with mere buffs and nerfs. That is a matter of design.

Take football for example.

It would be OP if offense was allowed to have 10 extra players on the field.. better nerf so theyre even It would be UP if office could only have 1 player on the field.. better buff

It would just be toxic if the standard ball weight was 200lbs. Its completely fair for a football to be 200lbs as long as both teams have to deal with it but it is a terrible and potentially harmful design.

Strong CC murders him, and worse than most champs because he is immobile, no dashes like Irelia, no blinks like Talon. His method of engage is to run at you. You can't miss CC at point blank.

which is why his outdated design is rarely imitated in other champs.

Garen can split push yes, but he is also an invaluable resource in a team fight. He's the guy you want morg to black shield so he can run past everyone and murder the enemy carry. The point is that he is encouraged to do so and has been used for this very frequently in recent times and people struggled to do much with him when he couldn't do such a thing very well.

Remember that this is not a matter of balance but design. Garen players in practice are not encouraged to combo off with much of anyone except in times when he is particularly strong and even then he tends to just be a massive ball of stats and steroids which is again not healthy for the game according to the people who would buff him again going back to "why wont they buff garen?"

Really? There are way more complicated champs than Garen.

simplicity can be toxic as well. (see design value: mastery)

His Q silences and removes slows, his W gives him damage reduction and stacking defenses (to a cap) his e spins to deal damage, and his ult marks the villain and makes his e and AAs do extra damage to the villain. His ult does true damage to the villain.

Look, any champion can seem insurmountable but there is always a way.

whether or not he is "surmountable" is irrelevant. He is toxic, whether he is OP or UP is irrelevant, even if he is balanced this is irrelevant to toxicity which I am stating is the reason behind him not receiving buffs.

None of which makes him any less toxic. Having no earlygame is not healthy and buffing this would lead to a buff to the consistency of a strong mid and lategame which are toxic therefore making any buff to this toxic which goes back to why garen wasn't buffed.

Duude, a stong mid and late game are not toxic. I don't know where you are getting this stuff from. Kog'Maw has a strong late game, is he toxic? (Technically he is, what with his caustic spittle and all) Brand has a strong midgame, is he toxic?

Being strong is not the same thing as being toxic, in fact I don't think you know what the word "toxic" means, and if you do you are not communicating this appropriately.

Plus I never said he had no early game, I provided examples to show you that he isn't OP/broken/toxic.

incorrect, he has to put points in his W by standing within experience range of dying minions. He could do this from inside a bush if he wanted and denying this to him is not practical in many cases.

[slayer-jinx-unamused]

I... I don't think you understand how Garen works. The description of his W specifically says that he gains resistances every time he kills a unit. His good looks are not enough to gain points from killing the enemy minions.

The fact garen doesn't get to play during his cooldowns is another sign that he is riddled with design issues. Again reason not to simply buff him.

[zombie-brand-mindblown] Dude. Dude. Dude. Plenty of champs are reduced to auto attacks when their cooldowns run out. Take ANY burst mage in the game, they use their spells, they just amble around and wait for their spells to turn back on. That is not a design flaw, that is making sure everybody isn't Ryze. If you want examples like Garen, Riven is also held back by cooldowns. The fact that she can kill most people before her cooldowns run out isn't important right now. The important thing is that when her cooldowns are up, she autos or repositions till they come back. That isn't a design flaw.

It would just be toxic if the standard ball weight was 200lbs. Its completely fair for a football to be 200lbs as long as both teams have to deal with it but it is a terrible and potentially harmful design.

Bruh, that example is just... inaccurate. That football you mentioned? It makes the game itself a problem, not one of the players, which in this case is Garen. The ally team doesn't have to deal with Garen.

which is why his outdated design is rarely imitated in other champs.

Bro, I assume you mean his "outdated" mobility. Have you seen Darius? He walks towards you, he doesn't dash or blink. Sion? Run or ult towards you, which is just fast running. Trundle? Walks at you/slows you. Which is still walking.

The point is that he is encouraged to do so and has been used for this very frequently in recent times and people struggled to do much with him when he couldn't do such a thing very well.

I'm not sure what ELO you are in, but experienced Garens do combo with their team. Every good player knows that no man is an island, that every champion is a part of a greater goal; wreck the enemy Nexus. Inexperienced players (and experienced ones with crappy communication) play as if they are alone, experienced ones play as one.

massive ball of stats and steroids which is again not healthy for the game

Wut. He has a silence and an execute, I think you're not giving him enough credit. And just who decides what is "healthy" for the game eh? You? Me? Riot? The people who put the game together? Theorycrafters? The LCS? The answer is all of us and none of us. We can't all act like we are the final authority on the game's health, especially not if we don't completely understand the game. I don't understand the game completely, so I cannot decide what is healthy for it based on my limited experience for example.

simplicity can be toxic as well. (see design value: mastery)

[zombie-brand-mindblown]

I think you need to look at these again, these are referring to the game as a whole and the players, not specific champions.

whether or not he is "surmountable" is irrelevant. He is toxic, whether he is OP or UP is irrelevant, even if he is balanced this is irrelevant to toxicity which I am stating is the reason behind him not receiving buffs.

incorrect

we are not discussing why he is OP we are discussing why he is toxic or not

Having a history demonstrates a relevant pattern of toxicity. In this case it further demonstrates as you yourself have partially suggested that garen is in fact a champ that prefers to just simply bypass the earlygame if possible which is another form of toxicity which is, in turn, why I claim he cannot be buffed.

...

You mean to tell me that whether a champion is balanced or not has no bearing on whether they should be buffed?

[zombie-brand-mindblown]

incorrect but close.

Whether or not a champion is balance is secondary to overall toxicity. An OP champ that is healthy for the most part will go longer without nerfs than a UP champ that is toxic.

Assuming nothing has happened in any tournament play a toxic champion with a 45% winrate is more likely to get nerfs than a OP one with a 55% winrate at any random moment. But then consider tournament play and balance is weighed much more heavily. But for the most part balance is a secondary attribute to consider. What good is a balanced game nobody is willing to play? This is what you have to look at as a designer when appropriate.

They aren't ready to handle Justice.

doesn't matter, the majority does not receive satisfaction from efforts towards mastery. This is referred to as "being unrewarding" which is a form of toxicity.

Plus I never said he had no early game, I provided examples to show you that he isn't OP/broken/toxic.

correct, a strong mid and lategame are not toxic, but being rewarded for attempting to sit out the earlygame is toxic. Thriving early and simply falling off late is also toxic. The designers want players engaged all game and for decisions and actions upon and from champions to have meaning, some champs like garen and vladmir or irelia will simply heal this off.

You ask if kog is toxic, every champ has some form of toxicity. But its a matter of which forms and how much.

garens are anti-fun Riven is engaging, and forcibly so.

garen is rewarded for sitting out the earlygame Riven is rewarded by forcing you to earlygame

garen is rewarded when the enemy does good Riven is rewarded when she hops around and breaks faces and dashes around and breaks more faces

mastering garen is not known to be rewarding mastering riven makes you like faker!!!

When its time to choose who to buff Riven will probably be selected and garen will not because the type and level of toxicity are bad for the game and when he is strong it only gets worse.

[slayer-jinx-unamused]

I... I don't think you understand how Garen works. The description of his W specifically says that he gains resistances every time he kills a unit. His good looks are not enough to gain points from killing the enemy minions.

ah, looks like they changed it a bit

"Passive: Garen permanently gains 0.25 bonus armor and magic resistance every time he kills an enemy unit, up to a maximum of 30 bonus resistances."

but really who are you kidding... this is just more reason to skip the earlygame again and he is still essentially a champ with some free resistances. And that's just the passive on his defense steroid.

That isn't a design flaw.

riven gives you something to actively think about and play around and apply and escape with when her stuff is on or off cooldown. When riven's kit is on cooldown, a very short cooldown, she is vulnerable and actively trying to do whatever she's gotta do to get around this.

Garen is just a massive rock that goes and puts his stuff on cooldown. He doesn't care much about your damage, can heal it off anyways. He just sits there being boring or runs away.

It isn't fun to watch it isn't engaging nor does it encourage capitalizing on the window of opportunity

Riven's abilities are on cooldown = time to capitalize on her weakpoint while she does her best to survive! Garen's abilities are on cooldown = question if trying to capitalize on this is even worth your time... you'll be chasing him across the map trying to kill him only to fail to do so. He will just ignore most of your damage.

Bruh, that example is just... inaccurate. That football you mentioned? It makes the game itself a problem, not one of the players, which in this case is Garen. The ally team doesn't have to deal with Garen.

the example works.. the goal isn't to describe garen specifically but yes, garen is a problem with the game that would grow if buffed. Same deal with stealth abilities. That's why tis taken so many years to rework shaco

Bro, I assume you mean his "outdated" mobility. Have you seen Darius? He walks towards you, he doesn't dash or blink. Sion? Run or ult towards you, which is just fast running. Trundle? Walks at you/slows you. Which is still walking.

none of them are given free motion + cc removal.

free motion as in you can move in any direction you want and go anywhere you want

Garen is a tanky mobile champ which is something riot has repeatedly been nerfing into the ground to do away with the toxicity it causes, particularly when they are running AWAY

I'm not sure what ELO you are in, but experienced Garens do combo with their team. Every good player knows that no man is an island, that every champion is a part of a greater goal; wreck the enemy Nexus. Inexperienced players (and experienced ones with crappy communication) play as if they are alone, experienced ones play as one.

irrelevant, he has nothing in his kit that rewards playing with the team. He can't even peel with anything but raw damage and the threat of a silence perhaps. Even in teamplay his job is often to simply run off on his own to chase someone.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCM82js8p3o

I don't understand the game completely, so I cannot decide what is healthy for it based on my limited experience for example.

sure.. but at the end of the day garen was not buffed and the reason is because he is very toxic

again, I'm going based off his playstyle, history, and riot's own design values

[zombie-brand-mindblown]

I think you need to look at these again, these are referring to the game as a whole and the players, not specific champions.

when you buff a champion you buff their influence on the game. If garen becomes meta than garen's toxicity becomes a large part of defining that meta which will in turn be toxic for whatever reasons he himself is toxic at the time. Same goes for any champ or champion type. The two cannot be separated

He is toxic, whether he is OP or UP is irrelevant, even if he is balanced this is irrelevant to toxicity which I am stating is the reason behind him not receiving buffs.

[zombie-brand-mindblown]

The question is not why he does or does not "need buffs" The question as why he "did not get them"

whether or not he is balanced is an afterthought when it comes to solving and preventing toxicity

So...

I'm getting the feeling that I'm not getting anywhere. You're too stuck in your opinion that Garen is toxic, and you won't accept anything that says otherwise.

I could probably spend my time writing a scholarly paper about how much in a weak spot he is, and how his low price tag cannot be an excuse becuase Ashe and Ryze cost just as much as him, and they are used in high ELO.

"But Garen is toxic."

I try to use logic and reasoning, but you stick with emotional arguments about how Garen is "unfun" and "toxic". This does not a good argument make.

So I'm not going to bother. Instead I'm going to conclude with a statement with about as much substance as yours.

All of your comments are "unfun" to read, so they must be toxic. (This is for example, I don't really think you're toxic)

Think what you like, at the end of the day my "opinion" as you call it is why riven players are drooling and you are stuck here sobbing because there's nothing garen. At the end of the day "riven gets buffed but not Garen"

trundle malphite kennen jayce

all of these champs are also getting buffs and all the buffs are to abilities that encourage interaction over passivity. Yes, even sustain machine trundle is getting buffed before garen, why.. because garen is toxic as shit.

You know theyre trying to get rid of spammable silence more or less right? Same thing with built in attack speed slows. But I guess that's just my "opinion" too

I could probably spend my time writing a scholarly paper about how much in a weak spot he is, and how his low price tag cannot be an excuse becuase Ashe and Ryze cost just as much as him, and they are used in high ELO.

Correct, you would absolutely be wasting your time trying to argue against toxicity with balance, that would be a needless fools errand, like complaining about the terrible flooring in a house that can barely pass safety code. Garen needs to be reworked before he gets rebalanced, anything significant he gets now will just be a troublesome and gamewarping distraction.

His pricetag is irrelevant but since were on the subject i'd like to point out that price tags are determined by champion release date and older designs tend to get broken more easily when messed around with.

I try to use logic and reasoning, but you stick with emotional arguments about how Garen is "unfun" and "toxic". This does not a good argument make.

You don't know a anything about my emotion towards it. "riven gets buffed but not Garen" and none of your excuses are going to change this. Garen could have the lowest winrate in the game and it would be irrelevant just like when it happened to mordekaiser and urgot so many times.

So I'm not going to bother. Instead I'm going to conclude with a statement with about as much substance as yours.

All of your comments are "unfun" to read, so they must be toxic. (This is for example, I don't really think you're toxic)

I may or may not be toxic

But i'm not a videogame (inb4 joystick jokes) and I'm not really posting this with the aim of being so much fun as informative.

TyrekGoldenspear2 votes

There's only one problem with your informative post.

It's all based on an opinion.

A subjective opinion that Garen is toxic.

You honestly have no idea why Garen didn't get a buff this patch. I don't know, only Riot does.

But you believe that Garen is toxic, and you're using this patch to prove your reasoning.

Besides, Garen can't just farm, afk early game, win game. Not in today's meta. I. This meta Garen has to get Courage (See what I did there?) And engage the enemy.

When I play Garen, I don't play passive. I engage in small skirmishes to whittle the opponent down.

There is interaction becuase I have to know their champ, my champ, their limits, how I can get in and out.

I'm not sad that there's no Garen buff, in fact I wouldn't mind at all if he got a rework. As long as he keeps his spintowin I'm good.

Just a small note, Garen's silence isn't spammable. It has an 8 second cool down at all ranks. Even with max CDR it's four seconds, and Garens don't build full CDR.

Heck for the sake of argument i could say that Shen is toxic because he wasn't buffed in this patch, and becuase he has so many defensive and nonengaging abilities, including a spammable shield on his passive.

You seem to have got it in your head that toxicity and balanced have nothing to do with each other. It is false. If a champ is toxic that makes it unbalanced, so it's reworked.

Trust me dude, if Garen got a buff, he wouldn't warp the game enough to be in the LCS.

I figured you hated Garen since you called him toxic, hence my assumptions.

Don't worry, no jokes here, though I couldn't fathom what joysticks have to do with someone.

And still his kit has elements that encourage the toxicity, it doesn't matter what you as an experienced garen actually does, the design itself is what matters. While he is "in a bad spot" you do what you have to do to win but if he's buffed what then? What if he's buffed more? He might go full tank, never farm early, and still rek people up to a falloff point where he's not even playing like he did back when his E was dealing more damage than intended.. There is interaction because you yourself play him that way but his kit does not necessarily encourage this. And so nobody is going to just outright buff this without a second, third, and fourth thought without a rework in place

4.8 seconds is one of if not THE lowest silence cooldown left in the game...

Heck for the sake of argument i could say that Shen is toxic because he wasn't buffed in this patch, and becuase he has so many defensive and nonengaging abilities, including a spammable shield on his passive.

Shen is one of the posterchildren of toxic champions............ Shen is probably worse than garen. Irelia is the only one I could think of that is all around considered to be worse.

You seem to have got it in your head that toxicity and balanced have nothing to do with each other. It is false. If a champ is toxic that makes it unbalanced, so it's reworked.

incorrect

imbalance is toxic toxic is not imbalance

A champ who's ult says "I win the game if I'm in my base and nobody is in their base after 10 seconds of channeling with an announcement" is toxic. This champ says you autowin if a player on each team doesn't return to base. What is base defined as even and why does someone have to stop playing to counter this? Its perfectly fair but is simply unfun and toxic.

Trust me dude, if Garen got a buff, he wouldn't warp the game enough to be in the LCS.

That's another thing though. He's toxic, he's not getting a serious buff, he's not getting buffed enough to warp the game meta. There's no point patching up toxicity needlessly if they aren't rek'ing shit left and right. Buffing garen is not wise and thus they did not. Meanwhile they are buffing faceplanters like Riven and kennen's E even.

I figured you hated Garen since you called him toxic, hence my assumptions.

half my champion roster is some of the most toxic champions in the game lol. Ahri can be considered toxic in a sense but that just means the rest of the game needs to adjust to ahri.

No bias whatsoever

#AhriFancultBanner

I'm not really concerned with hating on garen, the fact of the matter is that he needs a rework.

  1. he is mr spintowin. If garen is not spinning he should not be winning
  2. he is a resourceless bruiser/juggernaut
  3. he has to have an iconic battlecry ability and needs to scream "JUSTICE" during his ult that finishes off the badguy

most of his kit can be changed without ruining his theme. His playstyle isn't even what's iconic about him. His passive can go to hell. Not even sure why he has that when his lore says he gets off to battle hence why katarina gets him all hot and bothered

Don't worry, no jokes here, though I couldn't fathom what joysticks have to do with someone.

They never once said he was toxic.

Dude, if an inexperienced Garen flumps up his skills and doesn't play him to his fullest, he will be ignored in a teamfight and he wouldn't be all that useful. We take pros and experienced player's opinions on balance and "toxicity" because these players have already pushed these champs to their limit.

4.8 seconds is one of if not THE lowest silence cooldown left in the game...

He would be helpless 1v1 against a lot of top laners without it.

Shen is one of the posterchildren of toxic champions............ Shen is probably worse than garen. Irelia is the only one I could think of that is all around considered to be worse.

You are breaking my heart Scissors! Shen is the posterboy of healthy champions. You can't get more nontoxic than this guy. That's why I used him as the stinkin example! XD

incorrect imbalance is toxic toxic is not imbalance

Incorrect

toxic is imbalance imbalance is toxic.

I can say you're incorrect and spout something to sound smart too! :P

A champ who's ult says "I win the game if I'm in my base and nobody is in their base after 10 seconds of channeling with an announcement" is toxic.

Uh duh, but that isn't fair. Garen isn't anywhere near that game-changing. He has a sphere of influence as long as his sword, why shouldn't he be strong in that sphere?

That's another thing though. He's toxic, he's not getting a serious buff, he's not getting buffed enough to warp the game meta

He's not toxic, moving on bruh.

half my champion roster is some of the most toxic champions in the game lol.

....

How. Dare. You. Calling a champion toxic is not a compliment, it is not some feature like mobile or tanky that you can just slap on champions. It's an insult of the highest order!

How dare you call that beautiful Kitsune Ahri Toxic?! Even in jest! I don't play Ahri, and I would never think of her that way! I played her once and I loved her! (Not like that I know what you're thinking) How do you think she would feel if she knew one of her biggest fans, big enough to be part of her fancult, called her toxic?

You seem to call any champion that has an ability that can give them advantage over somebody else "Toxic". Guess what? Every stinkin champion in the stinkin game has a stinkin ability to give them an edge over their stinkin opponent, that's where the stinkin outplaying comes in!

If you think the game needs to adjust to Ahri then well... The game needs to adjust to Garen! XD

I'm not really concerned with hating on Garen, the fact of the matter is that he needs a rework.

I'm just fine with a rework, as I mentioned above. My only purpose here is to deflate your Taric Outrageous notion that Garen is toxic.

._. huehuehuehuehuehuehueheuhue

Well I think we can both tell by this point that this heated discussion has devolved into (more or less) friendly banter. XD

TyrekGoldenspear2 votes

I'm only replying because this is hilarious XD

they didn't buff garen either. actions, articles, and patterns vs explicit naming and shaming

Well maybe because Riot thinks Garen is, oh I don't know, Fine?

Yes, and many people will come to the same conclusion that exists in reality, "he is unrewarding and braindead and unfun to play as or against".

Yeah that reality exists in the minds of nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooobs who can't play against or as Garen. All your words are emotional and not logical.

Unrewarding? Yeah I don't know, I kinda like charging into battle, spinning to winning on top of the unlucky carry, then dropping a magical sky sword on their head. It's pretty rewarding to me.

Braindead? Have you tried winning a lane against Teemo with a melee champ? I did with Garen, and it's stinkin hard.

Unfun? Eh, I'll point you to my Unrewarding argument above.

which is perhaps why they left this problematic thing in place and thus why there is now a thread named

Nah that's just coincidence.

dood... riot has been crying over shen for over 4 years lol.

No they are pretty fine with him after the rework.

toxic is not imbalance... to further demonstrate this point I will add the claim that excessive balance where everything is exactly the same, perfect balance, can also be toxic

No that's just boring as crap, that isn't the same as toxic.

http://d3819ii77zvwic.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/ik49VlPshlPIz.gif

and I can continue to point out that garen's lack of buffs supports my argument.

And I can continue to point out that Riot thinks that Garen is just fine right now.

Its perfectly fair.

No, no it isn't. Do you know why? It's because it's a gamewinning skill that the other team will never have in a ranked game where there are no duplicates of champs.

yet no buffs

Riot thinks he's fine.

She doesn't get hardcountered but she doesn't hardcounter anyone which is another kind of toxicity altogether.

Okay now you're just making up reasons for people to be toxic! Stop calling champs toxic! There can be nontoxic champs, you just have to believe!

http://data.whicdn.com/images/20131999/large.gif

Correct, in the most literal sense any and every advantage is toxic and the inability to gain a reasonable advantage with a reasonable means is another form of toxicity though this is better referred to in a different way.

Exactly! Use a different term than toxic! Oh my frigging goodness, you got a glimpse of the truth!

Ahri is smokin hawt therefore logic, you have no counterargument

Touche. Also FIFY

taric is also toxic in a sense... in the same way soraka is. "should we bother trying to play if he can just undo what we do? with his ult and heal???"

You're just going to call every champion I bring up toxic, aren't you? Anivia Amumu Braum Sejuani .

Nobody really cares if non-ahri's get buffed or not. All buffs to other champions are are indirect buffs and nerfs to ahri.

And that is why your Toxic argument is invalid. It touched the hotness of Ahri therefore it burned to oblivion.

Also this is why Garen needs a buff. Plenty of other champs have been buffed since Garen, therefore he has been indirectly nerfed :P

riven doesnt need nerfs, but i wont lie. those buffs are scary. 20 - 60 damage on her ult at rank 1 is a lot. and looking at her stats, she isnt exactly weak right now. not very strong, but not weak either.

to be fair, aatrox needs a proper rework. not because hes mechanically bad designed, but his kit doesnt reflect his lore very well thematically by todays standarts, and he has nothing to set him apart from other dive fighters.

Darius relies on a stacking mechanic. Garen's ult is instant and not reliant upon stacking. Ulting the villain usually results in around the same true damage as a fully stacked Darius ult, without the trouble of having to stack at all.

That being said, I think Garen should get a reward for successful villain executions with Demacian Justice. Something. He should also get slightly better base stats than he has now, particularly with armor and slightly more AD. He has pathetic bases compared to the other popular juggernauts Darius Illaoi (although he surpasses Mordekaiser with the exception of base AD).

TyrekGoldenspear1 votes

True that. I forgot that Darius's ult strength was based on the number of stacks he has.

Maybe Garen can get some extra damage or extra gold for defeating the villain, although that sounds like something a bounty hunter would do and not a hero of Demacia.
