Ahri - League's Premier Skank

Diamondserpent··3 votes·1,824 views

This game is brilliant except for Ahri , she is the one champ that I cannot stand. Her character design is so obviously male fantasizing its pretty sickening. I mean, its offensive that a woman even is designed to look like that. Oversexualisation aside, there ONE thing that annoys me MORE then most... she is one of the most powerful and easily most mobile champs in the game (Unlike everyone else in the mage class) and she has this really ANNOYING, PATRONISING laugh when she does her foxfire that just makes me want to strangle the bitch. Honestly, its so irritating. Can you please do a QoL change to her and remove it...

Oh feck... delete her complete, she's a broken champ with both strengths of mage and assassin with the weaknesses of either.

If he was really a feminist he wouldn't be calling her a "skank". "Ahri's design is sexist" is just an excuse to hate on her more in this thread. There's nothing at all demeaning about a character who's confident and powerful in using her sexuality. Ahri is if anything a symbol of (admittedly morally questionable given the whole "stealing the souls of the horny" thing) empowerment through sexuality.

TIL anyone who thinks blatant oversexualization is unattractive is automatically a "feminazi."

Because preferring a different look for any reason is apparently wrong.

Actually, I'm a GUY! So yeah, not a FEMINAZI !!

Yes, a GUY thinks that Ahri is oversexualised.

It's not sexualisation, it's a female power fantasy

He's half-right. Ahri is a hugely sexualised champion, yes, but there is a power fantasy in there too. It's not like say, Battle Bunny Riven, where you randomly shove a would-be respected fighter into a slutty costume because "yay boobs". Stuff like that is kind of disrespectful because in the process of sexualising them you've also made them less threatening/powerful - Riven has no use for fighting in a playboy bunny costume, there's no reason for her to ever make herself more appealing to look at on the battlefield.

But Ahri's different. Her character being sexualised is PART of her power, because she uses her sexuality and is in complete control of it. I mean, Charm is the exact summary of that. She charms the stupid with her beauty so she can more easily get what she wants. In a league movie, the enemy team wouldn't make jokes about how hot she is (which they would with any other female who randomly has their cleavage on show), they'd warn each other not to let her use her beauty to lure them to their death. A lot of the sexualisation of female champions in league is done just for the sake of making them more attractive and that's maybe not that OK, but Ahri makes use of her beauty and is more dangerous because of it. There's power in that, nothing demeaning about it.

1000angrybees2 votes

Alright, that's definitely a fair point.

Also there aren't actually many characters that are truly autonomous with their design... like I think Ahri and possibly even Miss Fortune could be considered almost there, but in reality, are pretty much disrespected and sexualized in a demeaning way (especially by the community). Then there's characters like Nidalee who are supposed to be fierce warriors and immense power, but have really vapid and tacky out-of-place quotes about mating. Also like you mentioned with riven.

Miss Fortune I'm a bit iffy on because her lore mentions or at least hints at her using her looks for her own advantage but her gameplay doesn't reflect it, she's just firing bullets while occasionally mentioning how hot she is. Miss Fortune in her lore is an Ahri case where she's empowered by her sexuality, but it falls flat in the actual game. And people like Nidalee are indeed a mess, Ashe too (why is someone who is only focused on saving the Freljord teasing the enemy about her curves?). I can only hope champions like that get more suitable VOs in future.

It's true that even though Ahri has power in her sexuality, she does get demeaned by the playerbase. I mean you can see that in the OP of this very thread. But I don't think that makes the character poorly designed as I really can't think of anything that's actually worth demeaning in her personality/gameplay. She's a very dangerous being and people underestimating her is exactly what leads to them becoming her victims. But a lot of young men will objectify any woman - even women who aren't sexualised. The fact that some people in the community are too foolish to see the power that Ahri's sexuality gives her is not necessarily a problem - after all, it's people like that which Ahri preys on in her lore.

She was talking about the bow.

1000angrybees1 votes

Yeah. Her quotes are more directed at the player and arent really for herself. And there's definitely a problem with the way we as a society address females who are in control and are comfortable with their sexuality, but are often labeled as 'bitches' and 'whores.'

Come to think of it, I havent really seen any male character in all my days that was truly demonized for being sexual, never mind even being portrayed in a comfortable way. It's a weird double standard that females can be portrayed as more sexual, but are then 180'd and demeaned for it, while generally male characters are almost NEVER inherently sexual. (people gonna talk about how having big muscles and not having a shirt on = sexual. nah bruh, that is not the case)

Regarding men vs women it's just a case of deep-rooted societal perception. As in, women are expected to be sexy because they've tried to be sexy whereas men are expected to be sexy just because they are. That's why you get words like "slut" without (serious) male equivalents - people will always assume an attractive woman at a party is trying to appeal to men but they will assume a similarly attractive man just takes pride in his appearance. Situation changes if you're looking at homosexual men but that's another story. It's what leads to weird situations like Miss Fortune being mocked for being sexual but skins like Pool Party Graves being ignored - everyone assumes that Graves is topless just because it's sunny, they would never think "He must be trying to get people to notice his chest".

That's why I like the Pool Party Draven skin, it's a good fit for him. It forces you to see an attractive male character and realise he's wearing what he is because he wants people to find him attractive, because Draven's personality is already so loving of attention and well, he's wearing a speedo. You don't wear speedos unless you want people looking at that area. But nobody mocks that skin for being slutty anyway because if it's a man it's "amusing" that he's so self-loving, whereas if it's a woman it makes them a "skank" apparently. It's also good because you can't call Pool Party Draven demeaning because... he's in control of his sexuality. It's sexualised, yes, but not demeaning and so it's in a totally different world from Sex Worker Riven.

Unfortunately it's a kind of fruitless discussion, no amount of talk on the subject can change a society's perception, especially on a forum for a video game. But all you can do is try to remove your own biased perceptions so you can contribute even a tiny positive thing. Every person who realises that women who care about their appearance are worthy of respect (and really no different from men) helps.

1000angrybees1 votes

word to all of that. It's pretty unfortunate that this sort of thing isnt well recognized and not everyone is trying to make video games a more healthy platform for equality.

If you find Ahri sexy, you may have a bestiality fetish since she is half fox.

I will agree that she is and has been very strong for a very long time. As for the laugh, it's meant to tick you off. Just like Teemo and Singed.

if your male.. and you don't find Ahri sexy.. there is something seriously wrong with you...

saying a female finding Volibear or Warwick would be strange yes... but

You could also, you know, be gay.

OP is funny. On one hand, they decry Ahri's design as sexism. On the other, they use sexist terminology when referring to her. How ironic.

being gay doesn't change the fact that u can tell when a girl is sexy...

for example... I'm NOT gay and i can still tell when a guy is sexy. i don't see how a gay guy wouldn't be able to tell if a female is sexy.

Hey look! Another hipster trying to pretend that he has class by demeaning sexualization. Get over it. It's a art form that has been part of fantasy culture forever now and it's stronger then it's ever been. Your futile attempt in forcing your opinion of sexualized virtual females down everyone else's throat because you believe they have no substance underneath is NOT going to change the minds that have no problem with or enjoy it.

A lot of league females are sexualized just because but Ahri is an exception to that rule because it IS her design. It's like trying to criticize the mythological demon succubus for being a succubus. How is that derogatory suppose to hold weight?

1000angrybees1 votes

For those who are saying she's not sexualized... it's not like she isnt designed to be a male fantasy that people in this community either treat like garbage or look at her sexually. A lot of female characters are objectified and it's pretty fucking obvious who most of them are. And as the 'she's broken pls delete' shit, Ahri as a champ is hardly broken. You want broken, take a look in the back seat at these pieces of shit: Fizz Leblanc

(Also it's explicitly said she feels remorse for the bad shit she's done and wants to learn what it is to be human, but hey, ignore her as a person and character because LOOK AT THEM TITS EH)

Elise Caitlyn Cassiopeia Ahri Akali Evelynn Irelia Nidalee Lissandra - Do ANY of these characters have less then PERFECT waist or PERFECT hips. I mean seriously, League is a male's wet dream. I mean really cover all the bases here!

I mean you have for example,

Slutty Lolita Jailbait - Irelia Shy and Bicurious Sheltered Girl - Sona and Caitlyn Loud and Obnoxious Lesbians - Vi Emo Depressing Girl - Diana Slutty Female "Tarzan" - Nidalee

and

The "other" Option - Ezreal and Taric

I just feel that woman are all massively oversexualised in League and it actually makes the game come off as juvenile masterbatory stuff rather then a serious game with a rich lore (That it used to have)

Even Ashe doesn't come across that strong... as she wears completely inappropriate stuff to go doing archery in the cold!

if you read ahri's lore when you go to buy champions, it says she is a fox spirit given shape by taking lives, she can choose what she looks like and being the beauty that she chooses to be, it becomes easier for her to kill people.

OP writes a thread about how league over sexualizes women and that it should stop because it is bad.

OP then writes in his thread that he wants to "strangle a bitch" because her laugh annoys him.

Why does OP play Arhi enough to be annoyed by her laugh more than anything else about her?

Diamondserpent1 votes

That little giggle is just so annoying, I just find all of Ahri's character annoying. The only reason she is used in the meta and Riot keeps her strong is because of her sex appeal, nothing else defines her.

1 that doesn't excuse OP for saying "strangle a bitch" in his article, especially given her context. 2. Why don't you try to not use fallacy statements to justify yourself and give real critisism. Like how does Ahri's kiting ability not have character? Why doesn't her ultimate that gives large offencive and defencive mobility not define her, or the high skill cap she has to use positioning best utilize her offensive capabilities? How does that not differentiate her?

See its the details that make an argument not broad statements.

She was once considered an assassin that didn't have the ultra kiting mobility she does now. She had much higher burst damage if you landed charm. (Just no MS on Orb Of Deception) That had in my opinion defined her better then her current kit. I honestly don't know what other ultimate they could have cooked up with that matched her character besides Spirit Rush? A root? (As in binding her opponent with her tails and draining them?) Lol, the games rating would be bumped up if that happened.
