Now a days normal games are filled with try hard players who flash their mastery when they abuse something that is strong or "meta".

###UPDATE: I just discovered some old League videos in which some people tried out "Critsticks" or "Crittlesticks" LOL

I know this could be considered trolling in a way, but people take this game too seriously, and forgot the aspect of having fun while playing it. If it doesn't work at all, you learn and you move on, no need to flame each other for it because you wanted to try something like this in a normal game mode, where you don't risk your teams lp points.

No one likes severely handicapping themselves like that. If you mess up once or don't get a huge lead, you'll get one shot by everything while not being able to kill first. It's not worth it.

Because none of these are close to viable anymore. Like if you play let's say AD Malz, past level 8 you become utterly useless even if 36/0

The only ones that I see can work here are TwistedFate Lulu on-hit (because imo on-hit builds are the most bullshit things in this game)

I know they aren't viable anymore. But you missed the point. Back then when offmeta gameplay was more common, people actually played the game to have fun. Not to win, but to enjoy doing something they found funny.

Also the part where you called "on-hit builds are the most bullshit things in this game" is something I don't really agree with. Sure you have dominating On-Hit items like (Rageblade, Nashor's Tooth) but the rest of the Attack Speed items are either Critical Strike based or are just a really bad choice because they don't offer any good stats (Wit's End - sucks if no one builds MR, Blade of the Ruined King - sucks if there are no health stackers).

The On-Hit playstyle item choices are the most limiting in my opinion, since more than half of the Attack Speed items are Critical Strike based something that not everyone wants.

I know what you mean, and I play to have fun too (I only play ARAM or rotative modes since s6). But fun = / = being useless. Try building let's say on-hit Orianna, you can be fed, but after a few levels you'll become useless because you're going to deal no damage, have no self-peeling and will get deletted by the first assassin with item 3147 rushing at you. I said the ones that can be viable are TwistedFate and Lulu because they have a self-peeling enabling them to damage enemies, but others will just deal absolutly no damage and won't be able to do anything because how bullshit "meta picks" turned into

Basically : off-meta turned into suicide in most cases

That's just the reality of Assassin Design, if you get ahead and you build something that relies to deal damage over-time and not instantly you will eventually get one shot by them once they have a few items, regardless if they are behind or not.

Basically : off-meta turned into suicide in most cases

That's basically summed up in a nutshell, now a days.

Won a game once where our JGler got stuck with Janna because of role confusion. Bastard made it work and we all had an amazing time. But league will never be like that again, because Riot doesn't care about players if they aren't in the LCS.

well sadly this is true but in days past we had more customization with runes and masteries then we do now. so its really hard to be off meta now.

shit back in the day i use to do ap bruiser maokai top lane and flat out damage every 1 in the game ( i know it shouldnt been a tank allowed to do so , and he was a lil over tuned ) but never the less.

or how bout ap garen with sorc shoes. magic pen runes , magic damage masteries and dfg + ignite ?

Dude... I stopped playing the GAME over that shit. People don't know how to have fun anymore. I remember back when league was fun, there was all sorts of shit with people playing goofy builds in normals. AP Trist and AP Xin Zhao. Attack speed Nautilus. AD Kennen or TF and the dreaded all-support team. The full revive boogaloo vs the Dunk Squad. GOOD SHIT. It was FUN.

Now it's just people playing the same shit every game and acting like dickweeds if you so much as pick an off-meta champion, let alone bust out a goofy build. Riot didn't kill this game for me, the fanbase did. Riot certainly isn't doing it any favors tho with their choices over the last year or two tho.

Go play ranked in Bronze. You’ll still see that shit and it’s the best. It took a while to int my way down there on this account, but I can now say with 100% certainty:

Bronze is the promised land of League.

It’s not high elo. High elo sucks. It’s boring and they’re mostly tryhard metaslaves. In bronze you still get people doing wacky shit and ENJOYING THE GAME. AP Malphite and Mundo are 30/3? That’s fine, they’ll give your team a chance and just sit by your blue buff for 15 minutes. Don’t bother them and you’ll be fine. Nasus is out of control? That’s cool, he just wants to see how many stacks he can get (1200), not actually end the game. All chat can be fun and people have fun down there. And you get wacky builds like AP Ashe. Bronze is truly what League used to be, and my games there, win or intentional loss, have been the greatest games I’ve ever played.

People stopped? Play what you want and enjoy the game. I play suppnivia and stuff like that a decent bit. A friend claims his spot as best ryze jungle NA in normals from time to time. Just because some people enjoy playing the game's meta with intent to win doesn't mean you can't have fun with it.

Edit: AP koggles is a thing, it's my favorite way to play him. I wouldn't count that as super off meta even....

No one wants to be on a team with AP poke kog maw who goes 0-30. While Top laner and mid are trying new champs. Then the enemy team stalls out the game to farm kills for lols.

Imagine being the autofilled support leona in a 40 minute game like that. It would be miserable for everyone but the other team and the kog maw.

The truth is this meta is unforgiving. And anything off meta is screwing over your team and asking for a toxic experience.

Now you play to win because the meta is who wins hardest.

Thats the way it is because it is what riot has allowed the game to become.

I used to play on-hit Naut jungle. Back when sated devourer was a thing. Would build Devourer -> item 3006 item 3153 item 3091 item 3115 item 3172

It was so much fun. Sadly, burst is too strong now so if I tried that build I'd get killed in a half second before I could do anything.

Riot killed variety by removing masteries and reworking runes for new players. It's either go the optimal route or play something fun but either lose hard or try so hard to win it becomes unfun to play for me now. R.I.P Shen bruiser with trinity, on-hit Shen or even full ap Shen also applies to Teemo and Blitzcrank.

pretty much all of those were strong at some point and arent at the moment, its not a matter of something be off meta or not its if its strong enough to play and have a decent amount of success which will work for most of them if you play it enough but most people dont like to spend time learning the champ

"Strong" is relative. The issue is that riot makes the "true" builds and roles of the champions so substantially stronger by giving them mechanics that are useless in any other role.

The build would look something like this, note that this was before the Xin Zhao rework. Which kinda taken away that on-hit Xin Zhao playstyle. But with this build Xin Zhao would be able to solo Baron.

Ive honestly mentioned this before in game. Everyone plays the game just to get a win. It feels like no one wants to try something new. So when I'm busy trying to learn how to play some new champions, the enemy laner always has mastery 6 or 7 and they just spam the mastery emote because I dont know what im doing. It feels like no one wants to try new stuff.

I know that feeling, they are just trying to show off to think that they are better than you. Ignore them. At least you have the guts to try and learn a range of different champions instead of one tricking something like others, who might be really bad at playing other champions, you never know.

The problem is, a lot of people use normals to practice for ranked. So when someone decides to play some obviously off-meta thing, they get angry at having to waste 20-30 mins on something that is ultimately not gonna teach them much about actual ranked. Try looking through the other side's perspective, too.

Usually that's blind pick. Nobody really cares what you pick in blinds and nobody uses blinds as practice.
