Runeglaive is awkward; The Dark Seal alternative jungle enchantment for Season 6

In Season 6, Sheen is losing its AP and gaining more mana and cooldown reduction (building out of only a Sapphire Crystal), which affects all the items that build out of it. You don't miss out on CDR if you buy Iceborn Gauntlet over Frozen Heart, as they're both now 20%. Even Trinity Force offers CDR, now. Both of these at the expense of AP they no longer get from Sheen. Lich Bane got a new recipe to prevent it from losing AP, but it still gains CDR and even more movement speed on top of its old stats — a significant buff that also comes with a smoother build path and a slight cost increase.

And then there's Runeglaive. The Amplifying Tome that was removed from Sheen's build path was added to Runeglaive's recipe directly, but it's still losing 10 AP. It is also becoming the most expensive jungle item, while getting reduced to a state very near to one that was already once judged too weak. A few circumstances coincide to put Runeglaive — and AP junglers — in a very awkward position.

  1. This has been true since Runeglaive was introduced: the Spellblade passive reinforces gameplay patterns that are not ideal for many champions who want to build AP and play in the jungle, namely weaving autoattacks between spells. Examples like Fiddlesticks and Karthus were brought up immediately on first sight of the item. Those who do want the Spellblade effect would rather have a Lich Bane (see below).

  2. Lich Bane will now offer 10% cooldown reduction, a feature which was one of Runeglaive's key selling points that made it feel worthwhile in comparison to Lich Bane. Lich Bane now offers all of the same stats, plus twice the AP, a stronger Spellblade effect, and a significant movement speed bonus. There is no reason remaining that an AP champion would not eventually sell a Runeglaive to buy a Lich Bane, except to keep the enhanced Smite (rather have Exhaust for those purposes) or the new Tracker's Knife for warding.

  3. The Warrior enchantment now offers 60 AD, which in Season 6 makes it comparable to many non-jungle AD items (65 is the new 80). AD junglers make fewer sacrifices from their lane power in exchange for their jungle power, and as a result, they are simply more attractive options in the jungle than AP champions. Warrior gives 50% more of a stat that gives more inherent power to begin with, and the Spellblade and mana return do not close the gap.

In summary, Spellblade takes up a significant part of the item's power budget for something many champions don't want, Runeglaive feels weak next to Lich Bane, it feels weak next to Warrior, and it feels weak for a fully built item. A 40 AP Runeglaive does not meet thresholds of acceptable slot efficiency for an item one virtually must build. Fortunately, I think the introduction of the "mini Mejai's", The Dark Seal, creates an opportunity to solve these problems without giving too large of a power spike to AP junglers, and without forcing the enchantment's cost too high. I propose an enchantment that builds out of The Dark Seal, and offers a modified version of the Do or Die passive. It should build Glory on large monster kills as well as offering equal Glory from champion kills and assists (encouraging a jungler never to share kills is bad, and so is making them feel like an assist might as well be farming wolves — I'm looking at you, Devourer). The cap on Glory, amount of AP per stack of Glory, Glory lost on death (if applicable), and any bonus for reaching a certain amount of Glory (possibly tailored towards mana sustain, like Runeglaive) would have to be tuned differently from Mejai's to account for the relatively safer means of acquiring it, of course, but I think this would result in a much more palatable item for many potential AP junglers.
