Kalista gets a power spike from building AD early; better nerf her late game.
Apparently, the problem Riot has identified with Kalista is that she gets a power spike from building AD early on. So the natural response would be to look at Rend and take a little of the AD scaling away at lower ranks, right? Maybe 10/15/20/25/30% AD?
Well, no. They want to BUFF Rend rank 1 AD scaling to give the full 30% right away. As compensation, they're removing 10% AD scaling from her actual autoattacks, of all things. The result is that her early damage is shifted out of her autoattacks and into Rend, but remains unchanged. She STILL gets that power spike from an early BF Sword. But her late game damage, which was already weak because Rend can't crit, has actually been nerfed.
Identify a situation where she's improperly strong, and then deliver a nerf to a situation where she's already weak. Why? This makes no sense at all. It won't make her any less toxic in lane. It will just make her fall off even harder in the late game, where she's already losing more often than not. Don't get me wrong. If that were the goal — creating a champion who's strong early and weak late — this would be fine. But that's not what I heard. I heard her early power was the problem. So what's going on here?
My take? Go ahead and nerf the autoattacks, but DON'T buff early Rend. Buff late Rend instead, making it scale from 20% at rank 1 up to 40% at rank 5. This way, her early damage is actually lower, her entire kit is a lot less front-loaded in terms of damage, and this is actually still a nerf to her damage at all stages of the game, because again, Rend can't crit.
