I've had it with people belittling the amount of effort it takes to play tanks

Malicious Metal··119 votes·5,533 views

Every time tanks are being played and do well you see people go like "Lul stupid Braindead tanks" and every time I fight the urge to write an essay on why the tank played really well in that situation.

Just because tanks can take a beating doesn't mean they're easymode as most of them don't have escapes when they do fuck up. Yeah, they survive a lot longer than a squishy that's caught out but even someone like Galio is going to crumble if he has no way to get out of a sticky situation.

But this isn't only about them being able to tank. No. When a tank makes a huge play I see people bitch and call what they did easy/Op/any other ignorant expression.

A tank has a lot of things he needs to pay attention to in order for him to win. A tank isn't just a sandbag that's used to soak the enemy's damage and he isn't an expendable part of your team.

A tank has to: -Peel: Protecting one's team isn't as easy as it sounds, especially not in SloloQ, where the mid laner constantly face checks the jungle when they have a fed Kha'zix. They have to cc the enemy, use their shields/heals and their very lives to protect their designated damage carry Dealing damage is one thing, protecting said damage pump is the other

-Engage/Make catches/Start team fights: Tanks have to KNOW when and how to engage. Finding an opening, capitalizing on the enemy's lacking positioning and catching the entire enemy team in a huge CC chain isn't easy. More often than not an imperfect engage results in YOUR team getting wiped and not the enemy

-Knowing how to tank/itemize A tank isn't an immortal Colossus. Knowing how to itemize and when to use one's defensive steroids requires just as much skill as a Mage's combo and I've seen a ton of tanks just melt away because they fucked up their spell rotation or simply had faulty itemisation

-Surviving the laning phase/Jungle Tanks aren't lane bullies and most of them have pretty "meh" laning phases compared to Fighters and mages. A tank that's behind might still be useful but a fed tank won't snowball as hard as say a fed Riven or a fed Darius

In the end a Tank's job isn't as "easy" as some people think it is and I've had it with some individuals constantly belittling Tank players. In the end they're the ones carrying your sorry asses when you're fighting like the Frontliner and then bitch when the enemy tank capitalizes on your mistake and just roflstomps you.

You're honestly shouting at a wall. People in general will never consider tanks as requiring any respectable level of skill for one reason.

"Why take the hit when you can dodge?"

I see this all the time in games and media. The easiest and most common way to showcase how "skilled" someone is, is to have them dodge and evade effectively. Popular culture respects quick reflexes over sacrifice and self inflicted risk. And it's much easier to make someone feel awesome by dodging bullets than by being bullet proof. Sure being bullet proof is cool, but after a while people will get bored. People rarely get bored of dodging because it's an active thing.

This isn't a league problem, this is just a game problem because it's pretty much universally seen as "if you're not good, go tanky to compensate"

It honestly annoys me a bit in games. We praise offensive play and shame or mock heavy defensive play. Claiming that defense is a lack of skill.

This is only in video games or games that don't require physical exertion from my observation though. Because in actual sports, defensive plays can be better praised (but they can still be looked down upon because they'll be less risky).

Being tanky will always be seen as braindead by the general populace.

"Why take the hit when you can dodge?"

Well this is an extremely good point if the tank is going jungle. However in the top lane the entire game completely changes. Unfortunately in the top lane you either have to predict every engage by the championFiora Riven Renekton or dodge every skillshotGalio Gangplank Illaoi.

Tanks have to know how to dodge cc. We take them so daft shits like you dont fail it.

Salson6 votes

Galio and Sion both have 4 skillshots ...well kinda.

I like it as a way of skill expresion on tanks, they don't dodge but they have to hit shit.

It's really a cultural thing more than anything else. Or at least a Western thing. If somebody makes a mistake trying to do something a common response is, "Well at least they tried". People are encouraged to be proactive and the more proactive they seem the better.

It probably also has to do with the fact that when a tank or support does their job right it isn't noticeable. Keeping people from dealing damage or zoning them out is as noticeable as blowing them up.

Ralanr14 votes

It's not just a western thing. Eastern anime has this issue all the time.

Shounen anime protagonists are always quick little fuckers.

We'll always have Whitebeard though.

Shounen anime EVERYONE tends to be quick little fuckers. Moving fast enough that you do the "I can't see them move!" trope saves artists a lot of time and effort since they don't have to depict the movement.

Tanks in general are ez to play. Mention ONE that requires more than two brain cells. It's not necessarily because they are tanky, it's simply because pretty much every tank has a simplistic design.

Ralanr7 votes

I'll give you two. Sion and Gnar.

kda akali2 votes

I agree with Sion to an extent but, I don't really consider Gnar a tank due to the fact that most of his laning phase is based off of his standard mini form which makes him extremely squishy and ranged. I consider Gnar to be more of a fighter (Not caught up with the new terms, sorry). Also add in Tahm Kench and to a extent Thresh.

Ralanr8 votes

Mega Gnar is considered a tank believe it or not. Especially with all that hard CC.

Every single champion and subclass has been complained about at one point or another for being braindead and easy. For ADC's, all you have to do is right click. For mage's you left click. And Diver's you just got to mash R as soon as it comes off cool down, and it's all good.

But none of those are true. Every champion takes some depth and skill to work, even Garen. You make it sound like everybody is belittling tanks, Malicious, but that's not true. A lot of people would praise a Thresh hook flash lantern hook-reel play. Or even something as simple as a Tahm Kench devour save would warrant a thanks. How many times have you seen someone ask for "ranged bully toplaner pls"? I've never seen that, but I've seen plenty of "tank top pls". In short, I think it's just a few, very vocal people that speak badly of tanks.

Salson14 votes

To be fair Rito took a while to implement skill expresion into tanks, the VGUs Galio Sion Poppy Shen are very good examples of growing skillcap on tanks. Meanwhile Juggernauts have 3 champs who actually have skill expresion.

Also every class has hard and easy champs: Galio vs Rammus Riven vs MasterYi Jhin vs Jinx Thresh vs Soraka Azir vs Malzahar

Pluniverse6 votes

Galio is not fucking hard don't make me laugh

Salson12 votes

While his skillflor isn't that high, all of his spells can be dodged. Guess high skill expresion is a better term.

I haven't read anything past your title, but as an avid carry player when I tried joining and team that requested that I play tanks... holy sh-t I've never felt like such deadweight in my life. The enemy team always has some beast ass tank that does his job well, meanwhile I'm here sitting down wondering how the living f-ck people survive on a shitty ass class like tanks. I respect tank players, cause I sure as hell couldn't do it.

This Is Your Dad5 votes

I play tanks because I have bad "self-esteem" or a better word "assertiveness" and it gives me the confidence to go into a fight and prevent my carries from dying. I don't like doing all the damage because there's more pressure for me to actually kill targets. This doesn't make it easier because it requires less skill. It makes it easier for me because my personality is less assertive and more protective. I enjoy saving my carries.

GayFluffyUnicorn7 votes

SoloQ would be much more enjoyable if more people played tanks and be useful instead of trying to be the MLG quickscope carry of the team unable to deal any dmg because they have no mechanics, their micro sucks, their macro sucks.

Itsbeghdev4 votes

AYE. And those who are playing carries would naturally have a better time of it because they'd have help.

Poske5 votes

Its just the way it is. So few mechanical tanks...

Tanks which require brain

Gragas - animation canceling, combos etc Zac - eventhough he is overloaded he does have to chooose between 2 ultimates and pick up blobs which is easy btu hey atleast he has something Singed - Because of macro. You mainly have to watch at map

Tanks which dont require brain Malphite autopilot Nasus go ap transition into tank... or farm if easy matchup become a tank... Nunu - take enemy jungle, w the carries very hard, e the carries Amumu autopilot Garen autopilot (INB4 he is juggernaut STFU he is just useless type of tank) Mordekaiser yes there is some skill in macroing Pets... Udyr Inb4 trick2g fans unique playstle.......... If you are new to league yes you wont have idea when to use stance or what to max.. But after you see some good udyrs you ll know how to play him without playing him The rest....

Compare that to the mage/assassin role...

Light fighter role which consists of fiora/yas/riven... (They prob changed the name of them)

What classifies as a tank? Not a sarcastic question, really want an answer. Doesn't nasus build full tank except for his sheen item?

A tank's job is to soak damage and apply CC to high priority targets. They usually have huge defensive steroids and AoE CC

Juggernauts are tanky melee carries with a strong mix of Damage and Durability. They lack CC and if they do have it it's usually just one ability and not really that strong. Their job is to deal damage and survive long enough to do so, they're basically bruisers.

Here are class definitions and with a subclass list from 2016.

**Tanks ** Tanks excel in shrugging off incoming damage and focus on disrupting their enemies more than being significant damage threats themselves.

There are two subclasses:

Vanguards: We like to refer to Vanguards as “offensive tanks.” Vanguards lead the charge for their team and are specialists at getting action started. Their explosive team fight initiation seeks to catch enemies out of position while allowing allies to follow-up to devastating effect.

Wardens: If Vanguards are “offensive tanks,” then Wardens are surely “defensive tanks.” Wardens stand steadfast, seeking to hold the line by persistently locking down any oncomers who try to pass them. Wardens keep their allies out of harm’s way and allow them to safely deal with enemies caught in the fray.

They updated the list slightly this year, but it doesn't change too much regarding tanks.

Pluniverse4 votes

Lol your right it takes so much skill to root clearly this class requires more skill than any other.

Ralanr12 votes

Never said they require more skill than others. They just aren't braindead.

I think a lot of people just look at Amumu,Gragas to an extent, Leona (when on the opposing team it looks braindead easy), Rammus, Nautilus, people think Nasus, Garen, and Mordekaiser are tanks , Volibear who is kind of a tank juggernaut, Malphite, Nunu, and any melee's who stack check that aren't even tanks but create bias.

Amumu is easy? Nunu is easy? Garen is a tank?

Apparently you didn't.

I said people think Garen, Nasus, and Morde are tanks.

Amumu and Nunu are not exactly mechanically intensive champions. They require things beyond aim, timing, etc. to be successful.

You do realize something with one ability can be considered hard depending on how it is balanced?

Also Naut and Nasus are tanks. The ult makes Nasus obvious. He can be build differently though.

Tanky=/=Tank. Nasus's ult doesn't make him a tank, it just makes him hard to kill.

Wikia lists him as a juggernaut but he has toughness (durability, etc) as his highest stat. He also has control, which goes against what juggernaut used to mean.

With his life steal, he needs to have damage to make use of it. However, he can be built in different ways.

HA (AP) Nasus isn't built the same as SR (AD* or AP) Nasus. (The * meaning the most likely best choice) It used to be he didn't have access to CDR either as AD. So, in previous seasons, his build was different.

Juggernauts have high toughness. And Darius has harder CC than him, both are juggernauts dude. Nasus's control isn't very powerful, especially not tank level.

You said it listed him as having control, not as high control. And a 95% slow is still a slow.

A basic test for tanks is if they can stop an ulting Master Yi. Nasus cannot.

Yes 95% slow is a slow. That was the point of the post. And it's not something to shit on either. It's really good.

I can't tell if serious.

95% means that most of your movement speed is gone. This means you move as slow a slug.

Now, if you mean tanks have multiple hard cc's, I would agree on that.
