What's a Galio?

Malicious Metal··57 votes·5,624 views

Galio's rework has been recently confirmed to be the next big VGU after Warwick, its scope unprecedented and heralded as a tremendous undertaking seeing that Galio's identity and gameplay's been confused for a very long time. So once again I was tempted to share my personal thoughts on the Sentinel's Sorrow and what I personally think are his core themes that should be explored in his upcoming VGU.

Disclaimer; This post might be very subjective, everyone's entitled to their own opinion and I encourage you to share it with the rest of us. Anyways, let's get started on the very first topic;

-----------------------------------------------------------------Who is Galio----------------------------------------------------------------- Before we can fully understand who Galio is we have to take a look at his backstory, due to it being extremely important to his character and being one of the most tragic and yet so very compelling pieces of the old lore, long before Morde was THE Big Bad Guy.

Galio was created by Durand, a magister of Demacia back when it was just a small city-state. Durand was adept at creating magical constructs, bent on defending Demacia from its enemies, their rival city-state of Noxus being the greatest threat they ever faced and thus Durand took it upon himself to strengthen the kingdom's borders with his own creations. He imbued raw stone and lifeless matter with magic, creating magical guardians to protect Demacia and its citizens.

His greatest creation was Galio. A sentient Gargoyle Statue and Durand's companion, always following the Magister, his only task being to protect his creator with his life and ensure he will continue to keep Demacia safe with his creations.

Yet Galio failed, the very reason he was created was to protect Durand but he was murdered by Noxian assassins while travelling with Galio, the Gargoyle's sole reason to continue existing dying in his arms while the Assassins disappeared as fast as they came. Mourning over his maker's remains the Gargoyle fell into a deep depression, an existential crisis, he failed, he had only one reason to be and it was taken from him. And so it was that Galio just watched over Durand's remains until they were nothing more than dust in the wind, Demacia growing into the empire we know today, his stone hide covered in moss he still watched over the same spot his Master had died in his arms.

He had no reason to exist... Up until a yordle(Poppy ) came to take refuge under his towering stone form. Her enthusiasm and strong sense of responsibility, having something she strongly believed in and pursuing this task with every ounce of determination managed to awaken something deep inside Galio, something he had deemed lost to time.

She inspired him to put the past behind him and find a new task, continuing Durand's dream of keeping Demacia safe, protecting the Innocent. And so the Sentinel's Sorrow was born, Galio's tragic tale becoming one of grim responsibility after he found something new to believe in, all thanks to a hammer wielding Yordle.

Poppy and Galio are both ancient beings, her determination having caused Galio to finally forgive himself, their relationship should be explored more in their lore, their friendship being a very nice touch that could give them both a lot more character but I'm digressing.

Galio's all about finding purpose in the wake of his Maker's demise, he's the Sentinel's Sorrow, a protector of the innocent to stop something like Durand's death from ever happening again, mourning over his deceased maker and taking new purpose in continuing on his vision of a strong and secure Demacia.

This is Galio

http://orig05.deviantart.net/2f83/f/2012/251/a/1/galio_and_poppy_by_kukon-d5dz7g5.jpg

-----------------------------------------------------------------A magical Construct----------------------------------------------------------------- In terms of appearance I think Galio's pretty unique. He's not just some Golem like the old tales of Prague, he's a Gargoyle sentinel, cold stone brought to life by strong magic. This should be reflected in his rework. While he might be alive and conscious his body is still stone, his soul strong magic and his will to protect being the driving force behind his thick layer of magical enhanced stone flesh.

Gargoyle's are a common motive in architecture and him being this very sorrowful character, having watched over his master's bones for so long makes the Gargoyle the perfect shape for someone like Galio. Besides, Crouching Gargoyles carry a lot of weight and most of the emotions Galio felt can be represented with a cold, mourning statue, having all eternity to think about their failures.

---------------------------------It's a mage, it's a tank. It's Superm...GALIO!------------------------------------- Galio's gameplay has always been very confused. He's got two long range Artillery spells in form of his Q and E, a heal/defensive steroid in form of his W and a tanky initiation/peel tool in form of his ultimate while also gaining damage from building tanky.

His kit has very little synergy with itself besides W->Ult for heals, more AP and general tankiness but beyond that there's little to no interaction between his spells. His Q, W and passive are all things I feel could be scrapped completely in favor of more interesting abilities, though MR scaling on his damaging abilities would be a really neat way to preserve the essence of his current passive while also allowing him to get a more interesting one instead of a simple stat-stick passive like Vlad

His W is rather interesting in its supportive nature and the heal it provides but the ONE thing I feel is what makes Galio who he is is his ultimate

IDOL OF DURAND It's a very strong ability and something you just associate with Galio as a character. But beyond that it also has the thematic value. Galio won't let what happened to Durand reoccur, not on his watch! He'll sacrifice himself if it means being able to safe those he swore to protect! The massive taunt coupled with his scream once the ultimate ends is certainly something very fitting for someone not wanting to let his past mistakes define him, wanting to better himself and continue on with his maker's wish.

It's the ONE thing I feel should be kept at all costs!

-----------------------------------------------------------------The mid-lane Tank---------------------------------------------------------------- Now this is something very interesting. Riot has mentioned wanting to truly deliver on a mid-lane tank-kind of character with Galio's VGU and I feel this would be something extremely unique while also allowing for some really strong team comps being built around Galio, though if you FORCE something like this only bad things happen (coughMordekaiser cough) Anyways, I feel him being this Bulwark Mid who protects his team and serves as the thing they can rally behind could just be the second most important goal of this VGU, seeing that he already fills that role somehow but being kept down by his outdated kit and generally not really fitting into the current version of League.

Now it's your turn. What do YOU think Galio's Rework should try to accomplish? What exactly defines Galio for you? What's better, cookies or cake? What do you think should remain from his current kit?

Share your ideas and let's discuss one of League's most forgotten champion!

I feel like you're understating how fun his W is. It might not be very iconic to people who play against Galio, but it's iconic to a lot people playing him.

Luigrein7 votes

Agreed, Galio is the closest thing I have to a main and bulwark is hands down my favorite/defining ability. I'm not saying don't change it at all (some/all of the healing being moved to the shielded target or %damage reduction instead of armor/mr boost both sound fine to me for instance) but I'd really miss it if the ability was entirely reworked.

RocketRelm1 votes

I'm pretty sure this was a typo on his part. At first I was questioning it also.

His Q, W and passive are all things I feel could be scrapped completely in favor of more interesting abilities, though MR scaling on his damaging abilities would be a really neat way to preserve the essence of his current passive while also allowing him to get a more interesting one instead of a simple stat-stick passive like Vlad

Definitely hope that they make him work as a mid lane tank. Having more options for what lanes a tank can go in can free options for other classes without really hurting comps too much.

Xonra1 votes

Naut was a fun mid tank, but the nerfs they did to him over time back then just kind of made it much harder. I have a feeling they will likely make him a "juggernaut" or a support. I REALLY hope neither happens, but that is what I'm expecting.

It's extremely easy for me

Galio isn't a mage, and i think he wasn't intended to be a mage Galio doesn't need a rework, his kit is well done for a support/protector and just need to be tweaked

Q is an aoe slow W is a shield/heal (should make the heal on the target instead of on galio) E is a movement speed boost in a unique direction R is an aoe taunt

those 4 things if you look at them are made to protect someone, shield a carry slow an assassin increase the ms of a carry in a unique direction that can be a direction to kite and obviously his R

the only thing he needs a rework for is his passive, because he shouldn't be an anti-mage.

It Hertz When IP5 votes

While his abilities shouldn't fundamentally change, I think their animations could be cleaned up, along with a few scaling changes. Some ideas:

Remove his passive, replace with <insert amazing passive idea>. He also needs the Fiddle treatment, where remaining motionless freezes him. Q AoE size scaling with MR. W increases to MR and armor now scale with Galio's bonus MR and armor (bonus, not total) and heals Galio for a percentage of incoming damage. Also shields the target for a very small amount (allows Athenes passive to trigger). E MS buff area now wider and longer if Galio hits an enemy champion with the ability. R - unchanged.

bill841 votes

I don't like this W percentage of damage idea at all. Along with countering mages, he is specificaly counter's DOT, one of the only champs that does that. Also, this is pretty much just %damage reduction with a few different interactions (GW, true damage).

Actually.. his W is NOT a shield. It increases the armor and magic resist of the champion it targets but does not provide a shield. It does not proc. item 3174

While it's not a shield, what if it was? That would make Athene's a decent rush on him again.

While it's not a shield, what if it was? That would make Athene's a decent rush on him again.

It would make Galio Support a more viable option than it is now. All they would have to do is code it as a shield but leave it's action as it is now since the MR boost from it buffs galios damage during his ult and it keeps him alive.

It Hertz When IP2 votes

Or just have it shield for something retardedly small, like 10hp. That way Riot doesn't have to touch their spaghetti code and risk breaking something.

I mean, doesn't Trundle's Pillar of Snot deal like 1 damage for tower aggro purposes?

Auz the Ripper2 votes

galio's W is what was original referred to as a shield. what we call shields now is what used to be referred to as an "absorption shield"

Ok, as a player that sometimes plays Galio i have to say this: take is easy Riot.

There are people that really love this champ and introduction of new champion with same name is not the way to go. All he needs is 1 or 2 new mechanics (one in form of new passive), visual update and some lore. Nothing too crazy. There is absolutely no need for sion or taric lvl changes in his kit.

As for people that want full rework for him... ehh... guys face the truth - you are not maining him now so you just want a new champion in his place. And likely you wont be maining him after his rework.

The same, sad story, was for Taric - tons of people excited for his rework, every day new topic with questions and suggestions of new abilities, boards exploded when his splashes were revealed... yeah i remember that. And you know what? According to champion.gg Taric sits at 4.87% play rate, below almost every other "traditional" support. His former mains are still playing him probably but I see more and more of them saying that he is even more boring to play than he was before, that he lost his core strenghts just to create a new kit, the new champion. Dont even let me start on other reworks that "killed" champions for people who loved them most. Trust me there is nothing worse in this game than loose of your main.

So for all you Galio mains I hope that he will stay almost the same.

they don't care, look at what they did with shen, i hated shens changes from the get go and now that his only offensive ability is trash it takes away the dueling feel, so he is in a terrible spot right now, galio should stay true to his kit without them entirely "reworking NERFING COUGH COUGH"

Doctor Ivellius5 votes

This really won't matter, but Galio is fine. If Riot wants to make a new champion, they should just make a new champion and then you can have both.

Samflash31 votes

I feel they need to slightly modify W,E and R.

Say, W can be considered as a shield that lasts for 5 seconds, will heal for the exact amount of the shield. So if you take damage, shield amount gets reduced.

E - No channel time. Gives more movement speed when approaching enemy champions.

R - Gap closer like Aatrox's Q.

Doctor Ivellius1 votes

I mean, tweaks would be okay, but the announced scope is "Sion-level project," so I'm not expecting much left of the old one. His current state isn't bad like Sion's was, so I would argue there's no reason to rebuild him.

His ultimate is probably fine considering that Flash and Protobelt both exist. If they put a dash on it, its power would need to be cut.

Canastus4 votes

Who's Galio, you ask? A champion with an actually amazing winrate and an impressive collection of skins of diverse quality (he even has a 1820 [!] RP skin). Meanwhile Cassiopeia, a champion who hasn't seen a single skin in 3.5 years, still is waiting for her turn to get some love from the visual department. She didn't even get a VU despite being released back in 2010 (just like Galio!), all she received was a TU.

Heck, your dear Galio has a far richer lore than she does after what they've done to her storywise. She's simply abandonware at this point without any link to Katarina Du Couteau or anyone else. She has 3 lines that basically describe her as an evil snakelady, that's it. From a design standpoint, Galio is in a far better place than many other champions right now.

Rayde Turnas1 votes

I take it you mean her in client lore? Because the Shurima champions all have major lore written on the website dedicated to them. And her visuals got touched up around the time Nasus got his VU. I mean, she hasn't had a skin that's true, but as far as looks and story go, Cass has way more than Galio considering that technically his lore may not even be cannon anymore.

Canastus1 votes

Well guess what, Cass is the only Shurima champ without a single story written for her, not even outside of the gameclient. Look around, you won't find ANYTHING at all. It's been like this since 2014 when they changed her oirigin story (for the worse), since then she has been forgotten entirely. Not even the MYM update made them return to her nonexistent lore.

Cassiopeia's basemodel and animations are still the same from 2010, she doesn't even have a recall animation (with the sole exception of her Jade Fang skin). None of her skins feature custom particles, Riot even went as far to devalue her only decent skin (Jade Fang) by making its effects universal for the rest of her lineup.

There's also the matter of her other 975 RP skin (Mythic Cass) having no recall animation or custom-particles whatsoever (this has been the case since its release back in 2012) and yet they charge this much for something that should only cost 750 RP in terms of quality. As you can see, she doesn't have a single decent skin left and really could use a legendary one at this point.

galios kit has synergy.

it revolves around R being up or not.

all of his abilities Q W E help to make your R as optimal as possible.

do not say galios kit lacks synergy, you just dont understand it, you revolve around R and making that big moment happen. im sorry its not cruise control to victory, but it works.

E to get in, Q to stick, W to make your stand, take it all and repel it back with your R.

its simply too valuable to use alone in lane and the CD is too long to make it functional as a standard champion, but he still boasts a super positive win rate because of its power.

BastionKross3 votes

From a gameplay perspective, Galio is the MR tank. This is opposed to armor tanks like Malph, Rammus, and Taric. His strength is dealing with mages, AP assassins, and other tanks that do primarily magic damage. His weakness is dealing with champs that output large amounts of physical damage like AD assassins, marksmen, and most juggernauts. He also seems to have a secondary role as a protector, which meshes well with his lore and gargoyle appearance.

We could easily change his passive into something like Tahm has, where his autos and damaging abilities get bonus damage based on his MR. Simple, yet effective. And it reinforces his MR tank niche well.

Q has to go. It's a clunky to hit skillshot, it looks and feels terrible to use, and let's be real here: an AoE slow isn't protecting jack shit with all the mobility League has to offer. He needs hard CC, and he needs it on something that has a CD of less than two minutes. Give him a silence or give him a snare or give him something that has a grounded effect. Just something more than a slow with an awkward travel time on the projectile. Of course, it keeps some damage to benefit from his passive.

W is close to useful. It grants tankiness in the form of resist bonuses, but resist bonuses don't mean a whole lot on a champion with a low amount of max HP (a.k.a. squishy champions, a.k.a. the champions who will most likely need your protection the most). Either make it into an actual shield so it benefits from things like Windspeakers and Athenes, or have it grant flat or percentage damage reduction. And while we're on W, why the hell does it heal Galio when he puts it on other champs? Chances are, if I put that ability on another champ, they're going to need the healing a lot more than I am. In fact, it could work in reverse to the way it does now; any damage Galio takes (before mitigation) heals the person he shields.

E isn't terrible, but it is lackluster and feels bad to use. Having a bit of mobility to get into position to ult is great, but the execution here is so clunky. E could be a damaging ability that marks an enemy champion. That way, Galio has significantly increased MS when heading towards a marked champion to either rush to the aid of his backline or press forward for an engage. This would also allow Galio to have excellent sticking power once he gets on top of someone, so that combined with the new passive, his auto attacks actually mean something.

The ult is iconic, feels great to use offensively and defensively, and delivers extremely well on the protector/tank/gargoyle identity. Some number adjustments perhaps, but it should remain as intact as possible.

EDIT:

What's better, cookies or cake?

Pie.

But as Gargoyle Myth Creature he a "Hybrid Tanky" he is a both resist to magic and he is a stone bruiser against any physical damage he is "Both tanky"," ((unless its true damage he cant)) " I would definitely say , making him a a tanky that has abilities take down target's hp in magic damage with his e or q like zac or maokai or etc. he is hybrid has to melee and both use his spells to melt. in his build as a gargoyle creature resistance + armor both should work on him not a tanky to mages only no he is already a stone monster, so by building resistance armor, and health with 1 ap item that should be his new itemization when he get reworked like maokai, like zac or etc . However a guardian angel should be his new best item and his heals should scale with both defensive or just hp

Azteryz3 votes

i feel besides his ult and somewhat his w is the only thing people play him for

they dont play him to throw wind that looks like it should tickle visually

they dont play him to throw magic BALLS

they play him to turn into stone and go taunt aoe teamfight boss mode

further support that even if it makes him become a full on tank (if they can somehow do that while making him a mage tank then all the better)

his w is very interesting and i feel they could make work

TL;DR make his better at the stuff he is good at and people only play galio to make big aoe plays and of course to play a fucking gargoyle

btw it would be cool if they made him fully stone and have glowing veins or designs on him (plus eyes ofc) love ya malicious

I'd like for his abilities to scale with resists for damage, rather than AP.

WRONG SIR! PIE IS BETTER THAN ALL! That is all. Have a nice day! [zombie-nunu-hearts]

Also Galio is one of my favorite champions but he fells so clunky to use and typically if you go tank then your team lacks a strong AP damage dealer or you get smashed in lane without jungle intervention b/c you do no damage... Or you go almost full AP and hope to god you survive long enough to pull off your ult/ team peels and keeps you alive to get your damage off.

50000000000000001 votes

Is he good against mages with his passive? I'd think he can go mid and build heavy MR to both survive in lane and be tanky enough to pull off a good ult (if you can even get in range, that is).

Ravenous Howls2 votes

He's ok against mages if he can get a major MR item before they roll. Otherwise he will get crushed due to his low mobility and lack of quick accessible hard CC. Problem right now is his Q is his best source of damage while being incredibly slow and hard to hit on the high mobility Meta that has dominated League the last 2 seasons.

Honestly I never understood why all the flying characters are slower than the characters on foot but his MS is atrocious I'd prefer faster base MS then have righteous gust give me a faster one direction MS buff.

theArtifacts2 votes

I honestly enjoy Galio as is. His Q is the only thing I find a little lacking.

Neamean2 votes

Want I don't want for him to get some weird tower mechanic just because he is a gargoyle. That what I fear most right now for his rework.

As for his rework I think he should be like a juggernaut but lean more on the tank side of things. First let see what is a juggernaunt?

They’re League’s hulking titans who, come late game, turn into super tanky carries who’ll pretty much destroy anyone foolish enough to get in their way.

and

Juggernauts are melee titans who relentlessly march down the opposition and devastate those foolish enough to get within their grasp. They are the only subclass who excel at both dealing and taking significant amounts of damage, but in turn they have a tough time closing in on targets due to their low range and extremely limited mobility.

You might think that a juggernaut is out of the question it doesn't really fit him but looking at the quotes I think it fit him quite well immobile, hard to kill damage dealer. The big different here is that he has range in his q and e. Q being 950 range and E being 1180. The largest range on a basic ability for a Juggernaut I believe is for illaoi which is her Q at 800.

Having range isn't really unheard of on a Juggernaut, they would just be balance around it. As for the CC he bring, Skarner has a ton and he is also consider a Juggernaut. So having a tank worthy CC is okay just so long as he doesn't have the mobility to utilize it like a Vanguard tank.

What do YOU think Galio's Rework should try to accomplish? Since riot want him to be a mage/tank they should look at Maokai, he fit the tank/mage quite well. But Mao does bring a lot of utility if they were to make him into something that could be consider as the same class as Mao I think it should be different in that he has less utility for better damage. I hope he could be some where between Gragas Sejuani Zac without the mobility and Illaoi Darius Garen with more range.

What exactly defines Galio for you? He is an immobile beef cake that can dish out some damage. Just because he is a gargoyle doesn't mean he should jump on the first building/tower he comes across.

What's better, cookies or cake? https://66.media.tumblr.com/e879a0334be7165b7666c812aa01c0f8/tumblr_o28sbrJ2gp1rlpicfo1_500.gif What do you think should remain from his current kit? R and W

RisenDarkKnight1 votes

I have to disagree with you about the importance of Galio's W and E. Galio's current W is his most important ability besides his ulti. It gives him so much tankiness and survivability. The heal is really strong. I think most galio players would want to keep an ability similar to his W in his new kit (though it could be made part of his ult [he gets healed for the attacks of the people he taunted] or something if Riot wants to limit his lane sustain).

On the other hand you seem to suggest keeping his current E which is probably the least important ability in his kit. I think most Galio players would gladly trade it out for a more interesting ability.

I personally really like his passive, but I think most people do want it reworked so I can accept that.

TL DR: Keep W, Replace E

Shrek Luigi1 votes

well over 50% WR and one of the most counterintuitive kits of any champion--his Ult is either an automatic teamfight-winner or absolutely useless depending on each team's respective comp and, since he's basically an Ult Slave by the time lategame rolls by, I'd say the big ticket change that Riot should work on is raising his skill ceiling by adding more depth to his kit/gameplay. He's actually a really good champion as-is, but for all the wrong reasons, and the individual portions of his identity come together so poorly that it just feels disgusting playing him.

Some other things to complain about: his Q is ridiculously strong, his E is basically a wet noodle that does nothing substantial for him in lane except tax his mana pool, his W is a tilt-tastic abomination, his MR-to-AP scaling basically ensures a lane-win against 90% of the midlaner pool while the rest of his kit ensures he can at least break even with the other 1/10 by playing safe, he doesn't have any good BM animations, he looks like some kind of weird morrowind creature...

If they reigned in the range of his Q by turning it into some kind of Big Punch/telegraphed it harder to open up his power budget a bit and maybe add some hard CC, gave him less-cancerous healing tied to something more fun, turned his wet noodle attack into an actual gapclosing tool and made his Ult more skill-oriented and less of a one-button fight-decider then he could retain a lot of his old identity--for the folks who still love galio like me--while simultaneously breathing a bit of life into him. He's a cool champ but his kit is filthy.

BLACK REALM GOD1 votes

i think he should have a VERY large health bar and a very small resource bar that drains over time while off the platform. once the resource reaches zero you turn to stone in a hibernation form to regenerate your resource bar and health taking extremely weakened modified damage until your resource bar refills or you recall. you will not be able to move or attack until the hibernation is over. his abilities should be his R taunts all nearby enemies while simultaneously draining his resource bar until it's completely empty then releasing an explosion based on the damage taken and the time spent channeling. afterwards going into his hibernation state immediately. his Q should be something like a projectile or some kind of buff perhap a basic attack buff that grants resource back if it kills the enemy. his W should allow him to dash to an ally like vi does to an enemy and wrap them up inside of his wings protecting them for a period of time while granting them stasis like properties for the duration of the ability. his E will allow him to take flight granting him new abilities, immunity to terrain collision, and movement speed while draining his resource bar rapidly. while in the air galio's q will be replaced with his wing gust that damages all enemies in front of him in a cone and knocks them back a short distance. his W will still be a dash but will cause an eruption upon landing based on the distance traveled damaging nearby enemies due to the weight of galio impacting the ground from the air. the move will then ground galio. E will cancel the flight.

thats what i think galio should do. after all he is a gargoyle.
