Or you could just kill the voidling before the voidlings spread while fighting him. Regardless, he's a lot less binary than before when he just pressed EWR and you lost without any chance to do anything if you weren't someone with QSS or

Although this combo is still hella annoying, you've got a lot more chance of surviving it now.

Champs like Lux, Ziggs, and Azir can out wave-clear a Malzahar easily it's just a matter of counterpicking. And if they pick him after you have already chosen a mid laner simply have your jungler camp him because all he will do is shove wave after wave if you play safely.
