I'm already in love with the new Runes

Malicious Metal··47 votes·3,406 views

There are sooo many options and different combinations, without one rune just being "The best" and damage being the only real factor when it comes to choosing which runes to pick. This old system was archaic and didn't really offer a lot of combination and didn't even allow you to customize your setup for your playstyle.

But this system, my god.

There's so much variety and taking Mordekaiser as an example I can really demonstrate the beauty of this system.

#Let's start with Keystones.

Currently I can only really go for either DFT or SRS with a heavy AP based rune page. But with this system I can tailor them to fit the enemy team comp as well as my approach to winning that game of League.

Is the enemy team rich in melee fighters and burly tanks, or just focuses on extended fights? https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/6/64/Press_the_Attack_rune.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/52?cb=20170926015306

Press the attack is going to give me endlessly stacking AD for me to become an even stronger threat during the fight while also giving me a 12% damage increase to really shred through the enemy team!

Is the enemy team rich in kiting and overstacked with slows? https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/7/79/Phase_Rush_rune.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/52?cb=20170926015515 Phase Rush is going to allow me to run down those cowards and destroy them with that rush of movement speed and slow reduction

Am I betting on a snowballing game or do I just want to grow in power over the course of the game and feed on the enemy's pain? https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/9/9e/Dark_Harvest_rune.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/52?cb=20170926015418

Dark Harvest is going to give me an exponentially increasing burst of damage that resets on kills and gives allows me to cut 'em down one by one.

#But even the lesser runes provide me with valuable choices!

Am I facing a lot of AP threats? Well, thankfully I can just grab a https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/8/8c/Nullifying_Orb_rune.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/52?cb=20170926025124 and shield myself from pesky mages!

Does my team have a ton of CC? Well, https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/d/d5/Cheap_Shot_rune.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/52?cb=20170926024452 is going to make that CC hurt even more!

And the precision path offers a lot of runes tailored to specific situations like additional damage to burly targets, more damage against weakened enemies or one that increases my damage when being under attack.

This system is so much more exciting without being stat checky at all and provides us with ways to really customize our playstyle. And the best thing: it's free and easier to use than the old one!

We can edit these runes in champion select and most of them are straight forward and don't allow us to just pick whatever WE feel is going to help us out the most!

This is a great update, and I can't wait for it to hit live servers.

APs got the worst ones. And instead of helping Mages out, Riot literally gives everyone an option for Magic shield. Seriously?

It's fine since no one besides tanks is going to get much mr from runes anymore.

Then what will happen next is electrocute gets nerfed and Ahri will remain weak. Plus the spell sheild is such a stupid thing to introduce. It is better than the other 2 key stone as well.

2Charmnot2Charm3 votes

Actually the other two runes in that slot with Nullifying Orb is useful.

Manaband for champs like twisted fate and ultimate hat is great for mid laners that relay on their ultimate for fights or roams.

Also Nullifying orb isn't as strong as hexdrinker, at it's highest level it would protect you from 120 magic damage; hexdrinker protects you from 110+ magic damage the moment you would get it as a rush item with it protecting you from 280 magic damage at max level.

This thing seems like it's aimed at marksmen/support when they have to deal with an ap heavy enemy support than for mid lane.

By "APs got the worst ones", you must be assuming that the Sorcery Class is for mages only, which is completely false. Mages can just as easily pick outside of the Sorcery tree. With the low CD/aoe, I actually think Arcane Comet is really good on mages with cc and slows like Lux and Xerath and Phase Rush will be great for mages like Ryze. And of course they have Electrocute, Dark Harvest, and the Inspiration keystones for certain situations/champs in the other trees.

The free shield for everybody might be utter BS though.

Aps get nothing interesting. Electrocute is basically thunder lords and most mages can only operate with thunderlords due to being nerfed because of the strong interaction between the mage's kit(ahri). Meaning without Thunderlords the champ renders being useless.

Arcane comet is just sending a meteor. The damage seems pretty bad but it is geared toward snipe mages.

I am not happy about the lack of intresting key stone for mages. Adc gets this infinite ad and ability to go over speed cap, tanks get infinite health, but mages get nothing like that.

I was thinking giving mages the ability to go 80% cdr like in urf for a couple of seconds will make an interesting key stone. Doubt Riot will make mages interesting though.

Aimléss2 votes

You're over hyping those other keystones. The infinite stacks only last for 4 seconds, so that keystone is actually worst than fervor for ADC's. The infinite health on tanks is still not all that much when you do the math, it certainly doesn't compare to an 80% cdr keystone lol. Though I think it's possible to get your ult CD really low though.

Ahri is less a mage and more an assassin, which is why mage keystones like the meteor aren't that appealing to an Ahri main. Besides Electrocute though I think Dark Harvest will be a pretty good keystone for someone like her to do damage in mid-late game team fights.

Runes are supposed to be broken. If it lasted for like 5 secs and cd for like 180 sec it would be a pretty balanced ability. They won't have access to electrocute or comet or Predator. They will be using that slot for a chance to spam ability within a short window. I don't think it will be too strong. Then again it can be adjusted to like 70 or 60% if it becomes too strong on mages.

Comment on Mages being worse, sees mention of Ahri, finally looks at name.

Yup I should have known.

i don't even know what's happening with other ahri mains, apprently ahri needs attack speed compensation for the lose of attack speed runes wat

Hey, don't worry. I think Ahri mains are fine. Ahris on the other hand gives people stage 3 cancer from his posts crying about Ahri being the worst mid laner.

It's less putting all Ahri mains in the same bag or "Oh look it's this guy again."

Seriously have you seen any of his threads? They're travesties against the mage playerbase's credibility.

Nevrankroaton3 votes

Are you serious? The sorcery runes is STRONG as hell.

Phase Rush is an insane primary runes, arcane comet can be guaranteed with Ahri's E and summon ahri allow to always make good trade.

Nullifying orb can also be use on AP midlaner, which allow hexdrinker effect on THEM. Manaflow band is GREAT, other than a tree spell, it make you regain 10% of your missing mana, it is a lot!

Transcendence is a no brainer and Absolute focus give a LOT of free stat.

Gathering storm is NASTY , water walker allow better roam and combat stat for drake/nash, without forgetting scorch that is still a good bonus dmg to have.

Hell, if THAT is weak, I can't wait for the board and then 5646446 QQ thread about dmg creep and sh*t like that.

And Domination is also a good tree for ahri, what the hell are you smoking? warden snip

the ones that have tons of options are supports IMO

they can either:

get electrocute to deal more get aftershock to play agressive in lane as it has 20 sec cd and be tanky in fight protect with guardian get the flash channeling to do plays like Thresh change ignite into exhaust with summoner specialist get ultimore of course

what i love about this rune system is that lesser runes matters, while currently you don't care if the enemy midlaner took merciless or mana regen. but now you will care about if thresh took flash channeling or something else

Have you seen the super-Zhonya's setup yet?

http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/featured/preseason-update/8100-8112?build=10111326

You can get Zhonyas up to 51% CDR, which puts it at a 58.8 second CD, assuming you get all 5 bounty hunter stacks.

This is insane for mages who are locked to Zhonyas for their effectiveness, such as Fiddle ulting in, Kat in a teamfight, Morg, or several others. Hell, at worst it can be utilized as a counter-setup for high threat lanes to a mage mid like Zed, as it gets you 600 gold ahead on that Zhonyas and the stasis at level 6 to counter his ult once for you.

I'm really excited; runes feel much more impactful than before, and you can tailor them to your own playstyle and team composition.

I for one love Aerie, it's super cute and helps me in lane trades.

Same here, I think the new runes system will help fix some debilitating weaknesses that hinder some champions from being played more often.

I'll be really Honest, when they announced that the BIG UPDATE in pre-season was going to be the Runes System, I was rather worried that the game would change almost to the point where I would have to relearn everything all over again. Now that sometime has gone by & they're showing us all the juicy details, I'm starting to get more excited for these changes. I'm particularly excited for Phase Rush, Stormraiders Surge is low-key one of my favorite keystones in the current game.

Truly Prideful3 votes

I'm having a good time trying to figure out what I can do with Jhin. Maximum attack speed cheese which will convert to movespeed and AD and the movespeed I could again convert to more AD? Maybe some kind of weird comet setup with maximum damage choices to build up poke. Inspiration as a tree is just very interesting, having the option of flashing when it's down would always be nice. Going into debt for items would be pretty nice early game to get that BF sword quicker.

Overall I have my fears for the new runes, but they look far more interesting than what we have now.

GrievousFetus2 votes

The only problem is that some of the runes are so undertuned that taking them is almost never justified, even on champs that otherwise synergize with them from a gameplay perspective. Cheap shot's damage is so terrible it will always be inferior to taste of blood, even on champs with no sustain issues. Transcendence is just outright better than absolute focus numerically on all but a tiny handful of champs. Scorch? Scorch is a joke. Gathering storm is so strong in terms of numbers that a lot of champs are going to use it even if they're early game oriented over waterwalking. Overgrowth's numbers are so low that even champs with %max HP ratios who've taken grasp will instead opt for revitalize.

It seems good on paper but things need to be seriously retuned because some options are just blatantly better. Perseverance and font of life are good, but nobody will ever pick them because demolish is orders of magnitude superior to either.

WalkingInACircle1 votes

Scorch is fine. Don't underrate laning power and the lane bullies who will stack laning runes.

Catastrop2 votes

I love this new system too, the amount of choices available is just amazing. I've already got like 4 different Lissandra pages, each of them covering various situations. I'm especially excited as well because Supporting looks like it's going really fun again. 4 of the 5 rune categories are applicable to supports and each of them offer wildly varying things depending on you minmax them. I can do Dom+Insp for a more aggressive utility play style. Sorc+Insp for pure utility. Dom+Sorc for pick oriented snowball game. Defense+Insp for pure support roles. The possibilities are endless. Really, S8 looks to be the season that I start taking this game as serious as I did pre S6 and I'm really excited for it.

I feel inclined to point out that with Ult Hat and Cosmic Insight, Koggers can get his Ult cooldown to 0.4 seconds rather than 0.6. That might not seem like the biggest of deals, but it represents a fifty percent DPS increase.

The new runes are going to be a ton of fun to figure out.

Oh Shit...

PaffWasTaken1 votes

Oh yeah? The whole rune system was only good to be scrapped and the precedent mastery were unbalanced. Instead of removing runes and balance masteries, Riot decided to fuse them into an even more unbalanced system. Maybe you love it, but you can't deny the fact that those chanegs are gonna make the game unplayable. Yes, they are indeed interesting, but they were the last thing the game needed. So I hope you'll change your opinion when you won't be able to play and have fun anymore, because even if there's no runes stronger than the others, they are all overpowered

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

Would you care to elaborate about how you're so sure this will be a disaster? I haven't seen anyone else with such a strong negative opinion of them.

PaffWasTaken1 votes

I hated the old rune system like everyone else. I wanted to see it disappear and instead it got a promotion to be even more impactful. I would not say "disaster" because I guess it won't have an HUGE impact on the game, but the perfect expression would be "the final nail into the game's coffin". You see, the game is at its worst state since its creation when it comes to fun and balancing, so it would be natural to see some more reverts, fixes and heavy balancing in that kind of situation...but no, someone decided to add something that has the potential to make the game even more unbalanced and frustrating. Those changes, like I said, are gonna be interesting enought to bring some fun to it too, but it probably will be mastery 2.0 all over: keystones unbalanced, small groups of champs quickly rising to win-picks, so all in all, we are gonna have fun while learning about the possibilities of that mechanic, and then you'll see the 100+ threads on the boards who complains about everything about that same mechanic, and for a reason. But I guess you are considering me as someone just raging whenever there's some kind of change, right? I'm not basing my judgement on my sole opinion, I've seen hundreds of persons on different sources highlight aspects of the rune2.0 who COULD be gamecrushing. Of course, I can't enumerate everything without looking like an angry monkey, but I personally hate the fact that those new mechanics strongly (and by strongly, I mean VERY STRONGLY) privilégiâtes AD based champions, and even more specifically, RANGED AD champs, the same group of champions that are breaking the game right now are soon going to have another advantage upon the other character classes: http://i3.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/382/385/0d7.jpg In a similar fashion, we are getting even more tools to break turrets, the same turrets that we are complaining about for like 16 months for some people, thus making the games even more short, another problem that the community is steadily complaining about. With the still light information that we presently have for the "biggest update in the game's history", all those problems are probably soon going to multiply themselves. I hate the fact that parts of the game that are already balanced are going to be even more, I also hate it to see that there's no plan to fix the current state of the game beside even more changes that we don't need, but the thing that I hate even more is that the biggest part of the community is eating this all up and are all happy to see some new things added to the game. The same person who makes a thread about giving some changes to bruisers and Ap based champs to give them a chance against other game groups is now making another one about how excited he is to see them being even more demolished. No, I was wrong, I don't hate this: this makes me straight up sad. the game that I love is getting less and less fun, but I still had hope that this season will change things up... now I see a possible "threat" to it and everyone is welcoming it with open arms... Yes, I'm tilted. Yes, I'm triggered. Yes, I hate anything that riot does when it comes to game balance those days. But I also want to have fun in one of my favorite games, and most people are going to downvote me because "duh, you are just one of those anti-change haters, you are not even challenger or even ranked at all, why your opinion would count?huehuehuehuehue" whenever I say anything that is against most people way of thinking. Sorry for bad English, sorry for hating and, most of all, sorry for the worst season yet, but let's face it: the next one will break a record in that matter

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

One of the biggest reasons I was excited about them was actually that all the free stats from runes are going away. I'm hoping that early game takes a big hit because of these changes, which is definitely another thing the community has always complained about. I'm hopeful that true late game comes back.

I don't see you as a rager about change. I think it's really valuable to give feedback of all kinds. But, I hope you won't take it personally that I remain excited about it even with the possible flaws.

Just like League in its infancy, I think it's important to get the fun out there before perfect balance, and this new rune system is WAY more fun than the old one. I'm already having a blast trying to narrow down my choices on several of my most played champs; there are just so many options.

If a few of them are broken? Eh, that's what preseason is for! Everyone keeps talking about how bad the game state is right now, but I've never seen it worse than League of Cleavers. I won't be worried about the direction of the game overall until it's at least that bad again. This game is still super fun for me, and I don't think new runes will change that.

the klepto rune is actually insanely overpowered in lane. it falls off later, but in lane its busted. you basically have endless sustain, vision to protect yourself so you can keep playing aggro, and you can even deny the enemy vision so your jungler can gank your lane if you get an orcales. its VERY good. especially on champs that can proc it often. i ran it on ezreal and every Q was an extra 5 gold and potentially an item.

the river rune is actually not that bad since it gives you MOVE speed too which means primarily it helps you rotate faster. its good on mid laners.
