I don't know what to do anymore... Climbing in ranked seems like a luck game.

Monkey D Luffy··77 votes·13,998 views

It feels like every ranked game I play is unwinnable, league is supposed to be a team game yet you're supposed to solo carry if you want to rank up, I've seen challengers lose games in bronze and silver so what hope do people who actually play there have? I feel like if you wanna climb you have to have the skill of 2 tiers higher if you're not lucky...

This isn't a rage post it's just I feel as if nothing I do works anymore... because as I said before, unless you can solo carry a team game then it's so hard to rank up...

I know there's going to be those of you who go examine my match history so I'll explain 2 of the games.

Master Yi - I forgot smite, this was a pretty huge mess up for me but we ended up having no hope even if I had smite...

Urgot, I got killed walking to lane at level 3 because their Rengar was so fed, that game snowballed out of proportion before there was even the slightest hope...

I'm not going to make excuses, I know it's not impossible to climb but it honestly feels like 70% luck based and 30% skill based, one of my friends is in gold because he got lucky and he can't even get his alt account out of bronze...

This post seems to be screaming for downvotes but I really wanted to make a post on this as I kinda feel hopeless.

For those of you who want a TL:DR...

In order to climb in ranked you need to solo carry a team game, you need to be lucky with your teams and unless your skill level is 2 tiers higher than the rank you're in it's super hard to climb. If you really are good enough you will climb but for the most part it's a massively stressful struggle...

If there are any of you who might have tips it would be greatly appreciated... :(

EDIT:

I'm just going to take an indefinite break from league (Possibly quit) it's not fun anymore, hopefully they can fix this some way.

Just by glancing at your season stats I will give my 2 cents.

1: Play less champions. Pick a couple @ your primary and secondary role and play the shit out of them to get really get good on them. A common mistake I see people who struggle with climbing make is playing a ton of champions (while mastering none). You will get better at a much quicker pace if you focus on a few. Looking down at virtually all of your losses on a 1-5 games played champions you will see that your KDA is abysmal on them. However, imagine if you shifted all those jungle games to Elise (who you do well with - 69.23% win rate). If you do that, all of a sudden your stats will look so much better and you would be climbing at a good pace. Even if you are getting counter-picked, you still need to pick your good champions. At low elo a lot of people will counter-pick you but have no idea how to play that counter-pick. You don't see people really doing this until you get to high gold/low plat so this alone will get you far.

2: I know it is easy to think and believe a lot of winning = luck, but it really isn't, especially at low elo. Whenever something bad happens don't think about what your team did wrong, think about what you could have done different to change the outcome. It will do wonders for your win rate.

3: Focus on your decision making in all three phases of the game. One of the MAJOR differences between tiers is the level of decision making. Good choices will get you to plat or high gold even if your mechanics are mediocre. I have climbed out of silver 5 many times on my different accounts and I have seen a lot of silver players with better mechanics and lane play than high plats/low diamonds but they have ZERO idea on how to transition their lane advantage into mid to late game and will lose the game despite their stats IMPLYING that they played well. This is incredibly important. To go along with this, never give up if the early game looks bad for your team. Since most low elo players don't understand the mid-late game it is easy to come back at low elo with a few good plays.

4: Watch high elo streams and pay attention not to their mechanics, but to how they rotate around the map. Even in dynamic Q your own rotations can have a huge impact on the game outcome. If you rotate at the right time you can get a kill then push the obj (or just take an obj). This is a very easy way to snowball low elo games in your favor.

5: Check your attitude. You see a clear decline in the number of toxic players as you climb. It is not a coincidence. Mute all toxic players in game and your win rate will automatically go up. Also recommend that your teammates mute toxic players if they are getting harassed.

6: I didn't comb through all your CS stats, but a lot of low elo players like to focus on kills/harassing instead of CS. You will want kills, but getting great CS can be just as good.

I will probably add more things as they come to mind. But, if you follow these 6 six things you will climb no doubt.

100% agree with this. I was Bronze 3 not so long ago. In the past week I've climbed to Silver 4 when I started spamming Poppy constantly. Picking a few champions and learning all the different matchups and specific ways to deal with things really helps you climb.

1: This is a good tip, one I've been trying to follow more as of recent, unfortunately I stopped playing Elise and I don't have the motivation to pick her back up, but this is a good tip and I've been trying to apply it more.

2: I Do try to do this, a lot of the time I'm either too inexperienced to think of something I could of done better or there wasn't anything I could of done to change the outcome of the match.

3: I try my best to do this but a lot of the time it's hard to know what to do... :(

4: What exactly do you mean by rotate?

5: I always do my best to maintain a good attitude and to stop playing if it's deteriorating

6: I do try my best to cs, it is difficult at times though...

Thanks for the tips, they're all very good, I do try my best to fulfil these but it seems like teams do have a heavy impact and I honestly don't know what to do when they're playing like invalids ;(

Your first statement in point #2 is absolutely correct. I also sometimes know there was some way I could have performed better but do not know what it was. The second point on #2 is absolutely false. You WILL NOT play a game perfectly. You may go 9/0/4 100% participation. Always something you could have done better. If you can't figure out how to play a mistake perfectly, at least come up with a slightly better way of doing it. If you really feel you were perfect, look at the times your opponents messed up, or that you outplayed them, and think of ways they could have outplayed you and how you might deal with those. I do this alot with my Gragas play, a champion I recently started playing alot. He isnt very mechanically intense, but there is alot of room to play a situation differently, so i get a good brain excersise for it.

Monkey D Luffy2 votes

Well I didn't say I play perfectly sometimes, I'm just saying sometimes there's nothing you can do to change the outcome of a match, there's always room for improvement of course, and of course there will be things you could of done better, I was just saying sometimes no matter how well you do you won't be able to control whether it's a win or a loss.

FillyPhlyerz2 votes

What he means by rotate is making moves from lane to lane. If you, the ADC, have destroyed your enemies' bot lane tower and pushed it in, rotate mid and create pressure. You'll either force their ADC to rotate mid as well or you will have a pressure advantage and can get hits down on tower.

Or, another example, if both mid and bot see that their opponents have gone back or been pushed back, go get that dragon. Enemy laners will be forced to make the decision of giving up CS and exp or contesting the drag.

Just a couple examples but things among those lines.

people literally refuse to be carried. had a similar score a while back as adc, our last pick rengar was feeding his ass off and started to complain that we had no tank(yet he picked a selfish carry jungler last), only built AD and would 1v3 dive and get killed.

I was literally begging, BEGGING in the chat "JUST LET ME CARRY YOU PLEASE, STICK WITH ME I CAN KILL THEM ALL WE CAN WIN" but apparantly thats not good enough for some people, if THEY dont carry, fuck you gg i quit.

Makes me so mad to have all my hard work invalidated because someone else has to be the star of the show.

If you are gold you can climb from bronze by your own skill to silver etc.

Because they are playing as if their teammates are plat/diamond (which is obviously a mistake). Each tier has its own differences and those need to be taken into account and your play adjusted. It is just naive to think otherwise.

Even if a challenger actually lost on bronze/silver (some games are unwinnable it happens) it doesn't mean anything since they will climb to high elo anyway. It's not about "omg I went 20/4/12 one game I deserve plat" it's abou being CONSISTENTLY BETTER than the elo you are currently in. It's all a big grind and until you realize the bigger picture of the climb (watching your replays, looking at mistakes, getting correct builds, watching pro streams etc) it will be difficult to climb.

I know it's not "luck" because smurfs/elo boosters exist they completely shatter that idea. The idea of luck dictating YOUR ranking is said by someone who is lazy and doesn't even put effort into trying to get better. Instead of making this thread maybe you coulda popped up a replay and watched your mistakes and take notes of them.

Yes you will get unlucky, you will get feeders, AFKs, trolls, etc WE ALL DO. But you gotta have guts to ignore all that crap and focus on yourself and your mistakes, misplays, learn from it move on and get better. now do you wanna sit there and complain about trolls or open up the textbook and start studying? You're move.

You have some solid points but I think this post is more geared towards Gold (max) level players being stuck in bronze. Elo boosters are obviously great players and they may drop some games, but overall still get the job done. This is because they are Diamond level at the minimum, so crushing low elo just isn't an issue. However, for a gold level player like myself it took me an ENTIRE SEASON just to get out of bronze then in the following week I went through silver to gold with little to no issues. We're not phenomenal at the game obv, or we would be diamond level also, but we're def not bronze level. The issue though is that 1 gold level player (usually) can't take on an entire team of fed bronzes.

In the end though, there is no real fix for this, so people are just gonna have to deal with the entire season struggle and eventually get where they need to be.

Dynamic queue made ranked... Meaningless. Riot wants us to focus on teamwork by queueing up with 3/4/5 players with voicechat yet if we do, the enemy team will likely get most or all smurfs. Silver and below had become even less than a luck game, I'm at Silver 5 with a 42% win rate while my average KDA is still 3 (support main) with 100 matches played in ranked. I'm pretty confident to say that the last 10 matches, 4 of them had smurfs in them.

If someone wishes to give me advice too, be my guest. I'd appreciate it. Focus on what I should change rather than giving critique, I can be pretty stubborn :)

GaryFreakinnnOak2 votes

To be blunt, you should work on warding more. I took a look at your op.gg and it looks like you ward about the same amount as the other players on your team despite the fact you have a sightstone! You tend to place about 12 wards in 30 minute games, in a similar length game I've placed from 20-35 wards and bought anywhere from from 2-5 pinks (I'm a gold 3 support main). It looks like you tend to not buy pinks in games as well. It also looks like you're forgetting to upgrade your warding trinket to sweeper once you have a sightstone. Your primary job as a support is controlling vision and setting your team up for success.

So TLDR: How to improve at support? Focus on improving your warding and vision denial. Watch support streams and see how they ward and clear wards to get a better sense of how to improve in this area.

Also, please stop playing Galio support. The second you start running into competent enemy supports you're gonna get punished very hard.

I just played a game with a tryndamere that was unranked and did not know what last hitting was. He had 6 farm at 5 minutes 0-2-0 and all I said was "hey tryndamere try to get the finishing blow onto minions it gives you a LOT of gold" and what do you know he got 3rd most cs in the game. Now I am gonna say this, it was bronze but still from 6 cs at 5 minutes into 3rd most cs still pretty good.

Great Muta4 votes

I have a platinum friend with a smurf account who hasn't gotten past Silver 3 in hundreds of games.

The only way to really play ranked is to:

  1. Find 4 people to play with you. If you don't know anyone, choose people who played good in your games or people who played good against you.

  2. Make sure everyone has mics. HINT - Your opponents likely won't have them.

  3. Coordinate picks to create the best team possible. We were running a heavy CC combo with Sejuani/Illaoi/Yasuo along with other pieces like Braum, MF, Anivia, Naut and Malph at times and we did very very well.

With this, I was able to go from B5-S5 with a 70% winrate. Unfortunately, since I hit S5, we haven't all been able to hook up since and even in 3's, we are still getting matched with smurf teams or people who are so bad that they have to be trolling. It really only takes 1 player to take down a team as someone in evitably will either argue with them or get so pissed at them that they will start to give up.

I will also tell you that since DQ started, the lower Elo's have some of the worst players they've ever had. We are talking people that I think are so bad that I have a hard time believing they aren't trolling.

Oh no, you just managed to avoid the potatos and griefing children out there OR you group queued. Bronze is that bad of a steaming rollercoaster of garbage if your luck is bad. There are lots of gold level players out here who are stuck because of season 6 by itself.

BASICIALLY THIS: The enemy team won't lose from a mistake. Your team won't lose from a mistake. But if their teammate is the mistake that team will lose and that teammate will do everything in their power to lose the game for the rest, intentionally or not.

GIVE!! US!! SOLO QUE!!!

Nobody says "I climbed with a good team to Gold II" They just simply say "I'm Gold II." Riot, nobody cares about the teams they play with in Dynamic Que. We are still being judged for our INDIVIDUAL rank.

I lose so many games to players doing WHATEVER THE HELL THEY FEEL LIKE at the time. The game right now is set up so that if you're behind, you 90% of the time can farrm right and use your manpower to get into the final teamfight on relatively fair grounds, which would normally be fair. Sometimes teammates ignore the right decision though. If it was JUST SOLO QUE. We would have to look to our random teammates for guidance, instead of ONLY GIVING A FUCK IF YOU QUE WITH A TEAM. I feel like there are so many games where I get one shitty duo que, and the enemy team has a righteous 3-man que. The variety of teamwork that I get in Gold II is so ridiculous. I consider myself a fantastic player between map awareness/ability to splitpush effectively and lane success rate. yet my winrate is dead even. 90 wins, 90 losses. AKA a giant waste of time. Because sometimes my teams are just THAT uncoordinated. Last season I was Plat II often facing Diamond players in ranked with great success and I loved it, but this season I was placed in Gold II and the new Dynamic Que has just made climbing impossible.

tl;dr ? Why the f--- are we ranked as individuals when we are able to team up as 3 people. Bring back solo que where we feel like our gameplay is impactful and team mentality is MUCH more consistent.

I carried myself out of bronze easily but silver is just an absolute mess. Your opposing laner could be bronze material or could be gold+ material, same exact thing with teammates, they could have the game sense of a plat player but others will have the game sense of a bronze player therefore being a massive anchor to the team.

I love this game but this season is an absolute trainwreck and it's so sad knowing that just 1 player out of 4 can decide if you win or lose depending on if they decide they want to troll or not, of course it's a team game but it's much too easy to ruin a game on your own accord

General Esdeath 3 votes

Pretty much. Riot talks about working as a team but adds more tools for snowball. BUT REMEMBER! If your bot lane goes 0-20 in solo queue, it's your fault as a mid laner somehow.

Nameless Voice3 votes

To be honest, it's always been like this, at least in solo queue. It's got slightly worse with the advent of dynamic queue, but not that much (because teams tend to skew the matchmaker either up or down, because there's no way it can accurately apply the right MMR penalty for those particular players' communication or lack thereof.) Games aren't decided by "luck" in-game (as those people who love to shout "luck!" when someone barely survives seem to think), but instead is largely decided by luck based on which players you are matched with.

If you get a toxic player on your team, it is very hard to carry that game, even more so if they are toxic enough to ragequit or AFK. Then, in turn, 4 people might lose a game they didn't deserve to lose and 5 people might win a game that they didn't deserve to win - and since win/loss is the only thing that affects matchmaking, there are now 9 players who are slightly outside of the MMR they are supposed to be at. The more times it happens, the more players are shifted around and the worse the matchmaking becomes.

That's why, while I tend to find games with dynamic queue more annoying, I still have some hope for the concept of making League into more of a team-oriented game. I don't want to play the game with my friends, I don't want to use voice comms, but what I would like would be if I could collect a pool of halfway decent people and have my team automatically built up of whichever of those players are currently online and looking to play. Kind of like a clan or group feature, rather than the "play with friends" that dynamic queue is right now. That way, I could at least be sure that I don't get any of those... unpleasant sort of people that I don't like playing with (flamers, trolls, and people whose playstyle just completely does not mesh with mine.)

(An issue I actually have with dynamic queue right now is that it applies matchmaking penalties to groups assuming that they are all on voice comms together, so a "team of random decent players" will end up with a higher MMR penalty than they deserve, because they are not using voice. I'm not sure if this is actually true, but it's a theory that has so far kept me from trying to set up such a "clan" in my own friends list.)

LatetotheRace3 votes

Oh yea, I know this first hand. This season alone is just a nightmare due to players not being in the skill bracket they belong in. (DQ op eh?) Even in plat it's just disgusting. I've played games with numerous players who don't even know how to farm, trade, play safe, farm under turret, etc etc. It's just laughable at how bad and unintelligible these players are.

This season is a wash and we really need to start over next season. Want to know how? Either remove DQ or reinstate Solo Q with changes to DQ that will allow them to both coexist. (It's pretty indepth on how that process works, but just pretend it can.) Then hard to complete reset of MMR of all players in bronze-gold, with sharp decreases of all platinum players. (Effectively full reset for all players in b5-g1 while decreasing the MMR of plat players to their corresponding gold tier MMR0. Example being; Plat4 to gold4 and so on.) There will have to be some other little changes here and there, but these are the most important.

I feel as though meta comes into play as to whether or not you can solo carry games.

Right now, games are really snowball-ey which makes winning or losing games a coin toss. Someone gets First Blood, then usually dominates that lane and gets Tower First Blood. Then you're stuck in teamfights with a noticeable gold lead/deficit.

In order to climb in ranked you need to solo carry a team game, you need to be lucky with your teams and unless your skill level is 2 tiers higher than the rank you're in it's super hard to climb. If you really are good enough you will climb but for the most part it's a massively stressful struggle...

As a support main who climbed from Silver 5 to Gold 3 this season I've gotta say you don't need to solo carry the game to rank up. You need to contribute more than your enemy counterpart and be a better teammate than the people in your division. From your match history you are playing super snowbally champions that either dominate a game or get dominated. I mention that I ranked up on support because you actually CAN'T solo carry as support like you can with other roles.

For all the games you are carrying there are also games where you aren't letting your team carry you. Your average KDA is sub 3 meaning you are dying a lot and giving up gold and map pressure to the enemy team far too often. You don't need to make hero plays to rank up in this game or even dominate from game to game, you just need to be consistently contributing positively to your team. Learn to play well when you aren't snowballing, and how to contribute to your team through good shotcalling, map awareness, and rotations.

SarcasticShepard3 votes

You actually climbed playing support in Bronze. As a support in Bronze, I congratulate you on having an abnormally high number of competent ADCs.

GaryFreakinnnOak2 votes

I actually found games easier the closer I got to gold because the likelihood of having a complete dud of an adc went down. That being said, if you can recognize that your adc isn't the right horse to bet on you can start roaming and supporting other lanes. If your mid lane looks like he knows what he's doing then save your exhaust and peel for them. Track the enemy jungler and show up to countergank them when your bot lane is pushed. Honestly, very little of the game is won and lost by the ADC in bronze/silver. Its usually about who makes gamebreaking throws at objectives and continuously gives up map pressure.

If your team has a bunch of total noobs on it, it is likely the enemy team does too. As a support you need to mitigate the mistakes of your teammates more than the enemy team's support mitigates their teammates mistakes.

I actually climbed from plat I to diamond 4 this season while carrying maybe 10% of my games, probably even less. How? MonkeyKing. Play a champion that is strong in lategame teamfights and all you have to do is get a game that is even by 20 minutes and you'll probably end up winning. In a lot of my wins, I was actually behind in lane but I still outscaled my opponent and was more useful in the teamfights (fending off enemy divers with my ult and then rushing into their backline myself) the adc/apc usually does all the damage here on the frontline as long as you can buy them some space.

  1. You're tilted

  2. You aren't trying to improve

  3. Everyone upvoting you is also doing the same

The game isn't about luck, a good player will climb if they are better than everyone around them.

Counter argument: As long as you know you're good, your team is more likely to win because your team is 4 potential idiots and 1 good player meanwhile the other team is 5 potential idiots. Although, you didn't take smite as a jungler so yeah, you're kind of the idiot for someone on your team.

You can't expect to get better at the game if you aren't actively trying to improve. It's so easy to go on "autopilot" where you do the exact same things every game and always get the exact same results. If you want to actually improve I would recommend the r/summonerschool subreddit

  1. I stop playing when I'm tilted and I take breaks.

  2. I frequently try to recognise mistakes, that's how I got to silver from bronze, I can't recognise every mistake though.

  3. You don't really know if they are or not.

"Master Yi - I forgot smite, this was a pretty huge mess up for me" I said it was a pretty huge mess up, I just said that we ended up having no hope anyway, I know this was a mistake I just thought it was worthwhile mentioning that we ended up being doomed from the start anyway, I never justified my actions.

"Counter argument: As long as you know you're good, your team is more likely to win because your team is 4 potential idiots and 1 good player meanwhile the other team is 5 potential idiots. Although, you didn't take smite as a jungler so yeah, you're kind of the idiot for someone on your team."

This argument is stupid because that's just generalising everyone, why do you expect every other person in the game to be of the same skill level?

"You can't expect to get better at the game if you aren't actively trying to improve. It's so easy to go on "autopilot" where you do the exact same things every game and always get the exact same results. If you want to actually improve I would recommend the r/summonerschool subreddit"

While this a true statement I am trying to improve, and thanks for the link because it could be helpful.

It feels like that for sure. One top lane game I lose cuz my bot lane is like 2/16, another top lane game I win because my bot lane wasn't shit. But, then again you see accounts with 80% win rate that reached masters or whatever so Idk. I guess they're mostly players from season 1 that played league for 6 years so it's possible with that kind of experience. Still, I had 6 games losing streak this week because I had a 5 game winning streak, it also seems like the system is trying to fuck you up.

You have to think of the climb as a marathon, not a sprint. Look at the bigger overall picture. Personally, I like to look at how I did over a stretch of games rather than each individual game. E.g. I won 6/10 games today, so that's a sign I'm on my way to climbing elo. Most people think they have to win EVERY single game they play to climb, and that's simply not true. A good player will win about 51-52℅ of his games. Understand that 49℅ of your games will end up in a loss and don't let it tilt you. Attitude is extrenely important, and I wish I realized that long long ago.

My brother. Solo Que did not used to be like this. I actually climbed from Bronze to Plat last season. A good player used to be able to do this. It's just not possible with Dynamic Que. 52% winrate is literally what a GOOD player has right now. And to climb Bronze to Plat like I did..... at a 52 winrate that would be 1800 games played. Fuck that shit my man. We need solo que back.
