What in the world is Braum good for?

allenmark00··3 votes·1,911 views

Well although it was an win, that PvE match went on for over 40 minutes. I was unable to farm minion aurum due to his sluggish autoattack speed. Since he looked like an tank to me, I went top. But this had attracted the ire of my team, who called me an troll for not going bot with him. And here comes the fun part, I kept dying again, and again, and again, and agian, and again due to his inability to 1v1 against an ranged champion. And yes, I'm an loner when it comes to laning, I don't give an damn about the metagame, and I barely have an idea about who's good at what.

Don't get me wrong, I like this game, but this game is hostile against newcomers

He's a support. Take him bot lane to protect an ADC.

allenmark001 votes

I wish the client told me that...

Wait, I thought the bot lane was for ranged champions?

Duntrle2 votes

It actually does. If you look at the champion page in the client, u'll see "Support/Tank" :3

I thought an support tank meant that it was tank that was good at distracting enemies?

IronwallJackson1 votes

No... it means his primary role is as a support and his secondary is as a tank. Braum is pretty much unviable in solo lanes or the jungle, largely due to some post-launch nerfs.

The low levels are filled with people smurfing on new accounts, and what you did looked like trolling to them. Toxicity is a problem, but a lot of it can be mitigated by doing a bit of research. Please don't just look at champions and make decisions of of that,

allenmark001 votes

I can't help it if I pick an champion that doesn't fit my lone wolf playstyle. I just spam attack items with an damage causing ability and hope for the best ever since that time I got yelled at for sharing mid.

IronwallJackson1 votes

Yeah, those are also bad ideas. Sharing mid means that there's a lane probably being forced to 1v2 (at low player levels since few people jungle without proper runes and masteries) and the person on mid gets lower xp and gold, which is something that person usually needs a bit more than they rest of the team to be effective.

Now, buying offensive items and spamming damage abilities isn't a good way to go about things, especially since most champions are more nuanced than that. I implore you, if you see a champion you want to try, look up their Champion Spotlight to get an idea of how they're supposed to be played. Some older champions have outdated spotlights (the old, ugly map might be a tell), and if they do, I encourage you to look up a more recent guide.

Until then, I suggest you try Garen or Annie, for and AD and an AP champ, respectively. They're both offensively-focused champions with 3 damaging abilities, are simple, and fit fairly well with how you currently play. Just keep in mind that Garen also needs some defensive items as well and that Annie really only needs like one, but is really squishy, so you have to mind where you're standing so that you don't get jumped on or otherwise melted by spells.

allenmark001 votes

Well I tried and liked Garen back when I first started (although he's somewhat boring to me), but ever since I've been at the mercy of the free champion rotation, I basically have no choice but to try out random champions and buy the ones that I like.

IronwallJackson1 votes

You can get Tristana, Alistar, Garen for free if you want. Just putting that out there.

Anyway, I still suggest you look up what champions are on free rotation and then look into how they play\ before you decide to try them out. It'll give you a leg up during the game, if nothing else. Eventually, you'll find someone you like. That's when I recommend you shell out a bit of cash so that you can continue playing that champion.

You can also look at the champion list, find dudes you like the look of, look them up in more detail, and figure out if you like the look of them. That might end up in some dud purchases though, so I'm not sure I'd recommend it.

Support tanks are support champions whose main focus is to assist teammates and they just happen to be tanky.

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

You'll learn where everybody fits as you play and watch others. Just because a champion is classified as one thing or another does not necessarily mean they have to be played that way. (though, it does say he is Support and Secondary tank in client)

You can get an overview of how to use a champion from their spotlight in the game info page on the league site; http://gameinfo.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/game-info/champions/braum/

As for the bot lane being for ranged champions, no not quite. The typical setup is a ranged champion called the ADC (Attack Damage Carry) and a second person called the Support. The ADC will be given all the CS and kills if possible. The Support will let the ADC get all that to make him as strong as possible, and his job is basically to harass the enemy, ward, and protect the carry. Braum supports very well due to his ability to shield his team from missile attacks and CC the enemy.

bot lane is a ranged champion and a support champion lane sense most ranged champions have little to no escapes if they get caught out

Taking him botlane isn't going to address any of your concerns, picking another champ will. Braum is meant to be played from behind. You will never be ahead as Braum, and even if you are literally ahead, it won't matter, because you won't have the damage to actually kill anyone and all your ability CC is skillshot based and gated by mana and CDR.

Still, good Braums are something to behold. His defensive scaling is amazing, his shield is amazing, and his passive, with the right teammates, can be amazing. There in lies the rub. You won't have amazing teammates.

Braum is good at helping an ally get an edge and keep that edge - much like Janna. He's just bad solo lane because he isn't a legitimate threat on his own.

I agree with this, but that's also part of the problem in solo queue. Braum duo'd with a decent ADC is going to be extremely dangerous. Braum without a decent ADC is just going to be a 3v5 with two hangers-on. Braum reaaaaally feels bad to play from behind. Contrast with Taric, or Leona, who will eventually reach critical mass regardless of their laning phase.

I disagree. If you think your ADC isn't going to be good, either take a support who will be forgiving to him like Braum Janna Soraka or pick someone who transitions to a carry role like Annie Brand Zyra . Both options are better than going for Leona or Taric who want to be aggressive but need the ADC's assistance to do so.

I would like to point out that I only bought Chogath and MasterYi. which means that I'm basically at the mercy of the free champion rotation. I intend to buy Darius, though

Ralanr1 votes

Yi is a good lone wolf champion, he's pretty squishy though. Garen is also a great choice. Gnar can work.

Really most fighters are what you want.

Typically there's always going to be a fightter or 2 in the rotation. Look for champions whose first attribute is "fighter" and you're probably looking at a champion you might enjoy.

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

Btw, did you know there are 3 free champions you can get through Riot promos?

allenmark001 votes

Let's see, I don't feel like signing up for Facebook nor Twitter, but I do have an YouTube account...But the bad news is that the YouTube promotion isn't working for me....

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

You don't have to make real account and keep it. They don't care if you just use it for the skin/champ.

As for the Alistar YT promo, it never works. You'll have to submit a Support Ticket to redeem it.

Abyssphere1 votes

You can't play a champion like they're not meant to be played and expect good results. Braum is good at a ton of stuff, you're just choosing not to use any of it because you're going solo top with him rather than duo bot support.

"I'm a lone wolf against the world going full damage on everyone" is going to get you nowhere in the same way that playing football as a "lone wolf who just kicks the ball as far away as possible always" won't work. Either try to succeed or accept failure.

allenmark001 votes

Well I just tried out Kassadin, expecting an guy who could hold his own. Instead, I got an guy who dies easily while dealing magic damage. Of course, this caused 2 of my teammates to leave the 5v5 PvE because I couldn't save top. Where's your so-called "teamwork" in this game. I'm telling you, this is why I prefer to go off on my own since I can't rely on help in this game.
