The List of Point and Clicks that Have Been Made Skill Shots

The Yetii Rider··1 votes·767 views

People have been referencing the startling trend of Riot to make abilities skill shots from being point and click. I figured the appropriate thing to do was to compile a list so that people on the mobility is fun side and people on the stop making skill shots side could both have the necessary data to prove their points.

This is a list of all the abilities that have been made skill shots, which were once point and click. KogMaw Caustic Spittle Rengar Bola Strike Ryze Overload Soraka Infuse Soraka Starcall (Not a Point and Click, but went from guaranteed damage to non-guaranteed damage). Sion Evil Gaze Veigar Baleful Strike Zilean Time Bomb

Additionally, in the vein of Sion , we can expect Taric Dazzle to be changed when his rework hits.

Technically, Soraka shouldn't count.

Sure, it's not a targeted spell, but it's an instantly cast AoE that may as well be targeted. Unless you put it in the wrong place, you'll still get the silence area.

Orbv1 votes

It used to be a 2.5 second silence. You can walk out of the reworked field in .5 sec. Yet like this you can silence 5 people vs 1. It's a pretty big difference regardless of how easy it is to hit.

JustMyBassCannon3 votes

It's not a list of "Spells that shifted power."

It's a list of spells that changed from PaC targeting to skill shots.

And, frankly, calling Equinox a skill shot is silly.

Orbv1 votes

Yes it seems silly because it's easy to hit. But you still call Gangplank's Ultimate a skillshot, and it's the same thing but global. Zigg's Ultimate is also considered a skillshot. Even Cassiopeia's Miasma is considered a skillshot.

The main difference between a skillshot and a PaC is that a PaC requires a target, and a skillshot does not.

You can use a skillshot during Nocturne's ultimate and hope to God to hit something, you can't unless you see them with a PaC.

Actually, I call all of those "area targeting" spells. Rather than targeting a unit, you target a location on the map, and the spell radiates from that point.

As opposed to a skill shot, where you point at a location, and a missile travels from one point (usually your champion's position) in the direction of where you fired it.

actually, a skill shot is an ability that uses line of sight in a direct targeting range. an artillery is an ability that falls onto an area, i'm not sure what abilities like karthus's Q and cass's Q are, but I assume they're artillery because they're time delayed and an area of effect

example: Xerath's Q is a skill shot that pierces multiple targets, while some like caitlynn's Q get weaker when they do so

Skillshots are effects where the enemy has a chance to react to the skill between cause and effect. Or, in other words, skills with which you need to lead your enemy, trying to predict where he is going in the next moment/few moments. This includes

  • Any skill that creates non-target-locked projectiles with a travel time
  • Area targeting skills that have a delayed effect (i.e. Rupture, Noxious Blast, Flame Chompers, Parallel Convergence, Dark Matter)
  • Skills where you become the projectile yourself, targeting an area (i.e. Unstoppable Onslaught, Onslaught of Shadows, Unstoppable Force, Vault Breaker, Flag&Drag, Elastic Slingshot, Dark Flight)

Rengar Bola Strike

Can still be a lanning monster. It also became stronger in return(I don't think it used to root).

Ryze Overload

A needed change because of how his lanning worked for a late game champion.

Soraka Infuse

Same name, different spell. It's better to think of it this way because the only thing they share is the silence.

Sion Evil Gaze

Same as Soraka. But they share nothing about eachother really.

Veigar Baleful Strike

There's enough distinctions about this one since the change.

Zilean Time Bomb

Needed change. Although kind of done in a disappointing way.

Yes it did, and no his laning is shit.

Rengar's Empowered Bola has always rooted.

The change needed to happen, but I agree. They kind of ruined his ability. It auto targets things further outside of it's radius, and has a pretty obvious travel time, about the same as a Nami bubble.

Cindikle1 votes

I don't mind the travel time. But compared to Nami, who gets the CC and damage right away. Zil has to land a second when the enemy is even more aware of what is going on.

There needs to be a gimmick. Like throwing the next bomb over the target will cause the bombs to attract each other and will cause the stun/explosion. More or less turns the second bomb into a line skill shot that only will stop at other bombs. Otherwise acts normal.

No, it always rooted (only on Empowered Bola). The only change they made was that it has a longer cast range and is a skill shot.

Duke Anax1 votes

Soraka actually not even that. the old Infuse was on E, gave mana/silence and got replaced by Equinox. the new infuse is on W and gives health to replace her old heal.

I think some like Zil's needed to be changed. His bombs had hardly any counterplay to it

they all needed to be changed. especially sion.

the only one who didnt need it, was maybe soraka. but turning her silence into an aoe with a snare attached didnt exactly hurt her.

the same goes for veigar. turning his q into a skillshot with much longer range, and the ability to grab 2 stacks instead of 1 was a buff aswell.

and if you pay attention, then youll notice they are all ranged point and click abilities on a short cooldown, some with hard cc attached to it. meaning allowing those abilities being anywhere near strong, makes these champions absolutely stupid to face in lane.

Nidalee SO NYAAA1 votes

I thought Overload was fine the way it was

no it wasnt. ever faced a top lane ryze?

they had to remove more and more power from the ability to not make ryze absolutely stupid to lane against as melee. they removed range, they reduced the scaling until he couldnt even be played mid against other mages anymore, and the only place he could ever go was top.

ranged point and click poke abilities are really shitty to balance.

Xerath Alistar , sorta

Also take into account on how many reworks we even have to begin with.

A placed AoE is also a skill shot. The only thing that is not a skill shot is something that is point and click targeted.

an aoe without travel time or delay is basically point and click like an on target ability. hes actually right. there is no difference.

Heimerdinger rockets too (not that anyone really disagreed)

Heimerdinger rockets too (not that anyone really disagreed)

if im not mistaken, the rockets werent point and click. they just hit the 2 closest enemy targets. which made them never as bad as actual ranged point and click abilities, because you could play against them by positioning properly, so they hit creeps instead of you.

Orbv1 votes

It may have been arguably worse because each rocket did more a lot of damage. It was (3) targets. But the thing about it was that it had surprisingly far range. You could stand at the very max range, and if the ability lit up, you knew you could use it. It made it very easy to poke. It also prioritize champions if they were the same range as minions. The new rockets are very easily blocked, like Karma's Q.

Wasn't Soraka's old starcall not a skill shot? It may not have been a point-and-click, but changing something that auto hits everything in a large area around you to a skill shot with a travel time and a smaller radius seems like it fits the spirit of the list.

Fair point. I'll add Starcall to the list.

Some skills I'm happy aren't a point and click anymore. Others I wish were still PnC.

I think Ryze and Soraka were better off in their old forms.

CrazedPorcupine1 votes

lol, Soraka was gimped in that if she was too good, she completely negated aggressive plays in whatever lane she was in. Soraka back in Season 0 could heal her self with W, give herself 150 mana with her E, and basically become an unmovable wall of sustain. She was broken, then she got nerfed over and over and over again until her light rework, and then her overhaul.

Sure, but he flat out lost the PnC skill in his rework. His new Q is much less reliable than his old one.

The Yetii Rider1 votes

Vault Breaker isn't really a skill shot. You can't dodge it unless you get REALLY far away from the initial cast point in a very short amount of time, and it's definitely still point and click.

Vault Breaker is actually a point and click area of effect knock up (which is the worst type of CC because it procs Last Breath and it can't be reduced by Tenacity). Vault Breaker is probably the single most toxic skill in the game now that Event Horizon has been reworked.

Forgot Koggy's Q.

Everyone always forgets Koggy's Q.

I actually liked it more as a targeted, flat resist shred. It gave him an edge against squishy folks getting up in his face and trying to duel him.

But Riot has been stomping out flat resist shreds about as gleefully as they've been destroying targeted spells.

And just cuz'

Missile: a projectile with a travel time that hits the first target and stops (Koggy Q) Line: a projectile with a travel time that passes through targets, damaging several (Koggy E) Burst: an attack that hits an AoE after a short delay (Koggy R) Beam: sub-category of Burst that hits a long, linear area (Lux R) Artillery: a projectile with a travel time that detonates in an AoE upon reaching its target location (Galio Q)

In my defense, Kog'Maw is a disgusting champion who literally attacks enemies with his vomit and I have done my best to ignore his existence. But thank you for your help, I have added that to the list.
