Meddler: Can I get your opinion on Poppy's current state?

Champion.gg - Poppy Top Stats, Builds, Runes, Masteries and Counters

Now I know that Poppy was a very contested pick in MSI. But from what I understand, top lane didn't have many picks beyond her, Ekko, and Maokai in the first place.

Now I probably don't understand a lot of the data presented on this website (and if anyone wishes to explain it to me, that'd be great), but it not only showcases that support Poppy isn't played enough to be registered (just like Jungle Poppy), but her winrate in top lane is at 45.72%, with more deaths than assists according to the overall champion matrix.

Is this fine? I'm probably biased because I like playing Poppy (I played her exclusively in the jungle before the nerfs. At my elo (unranked) it isn't impossible to play her there, but it feels like a struggle most of the time) and I understand that people really hated fighting her before those nerfs (and there are probably people who hate to fight Poppy in general). But is her overall performance satisfactory at the moment?

And because this is a Poppy thread, I'll get my downvote helmet.

Long, steep mastery curves on champions like Poppy, Azir, GP etc will result in average performance that looks pretty low relative to other champions when those high skill curve champs are balanced, particularly if said champs are also somewhat popular and being picked with the wrong team compositions/into the wrong team compositions.

What about her jungle state?

She is great at jungle . She can clear fast lose a little hp in clears because of her passive and you can gank lanes pretty easy with her w and stun of e . The problem of poppy jungle is that she dont offers much damage in the game and other junglers will do so much more dmg than her . You will not be very tanky as well despite her pasive because of the relatively low gold income of junglers . If you are a good jungler gold wont be a problem though . Also you cant build pure dmg on poppy as well cos she will be very squishy and wont do that much dmg as well . But generally a good pick in jungle and you can do quiet well if you get used to it

She's good...and so so underplayed it's incredible.[like champion.gg doesn't have her jungle this patch] Why: Insane first clear, after a certain point you are healthy all the time, she is fantastic in ganking pushed lanes overall and the sidelanes in particular. Very flexible builds, I build her with a huge amount of resistances to abuse her W passive. Her clear is also good enough so you don't need Cinderhulk, I go : item 3706(Sometimes I even just leave it at item 1039) and leave it like that, item 3025 item 3009 & item 3742 are her core. After those I take item 3071 and finish off with a huge amount of resistances from item 3075 item 3026 & item 3512 (pick 2 of 3).

Holy crap that Winrate by Games Played Chart on Poppy. That's nearly a 10% increase.

Ralanr1 votes

I'm not even sure if that chart is up to date since it says 2014-2015 ranked experience and she was released in patch 5.24.

Again, I'm probably wrong because of the lack of understanding for the stats.

well GP is sitting at 51% winrate and azir is at 50%. now to be honest. poppy is nowhere near as hard to learn as azir and gangplank.

if azir is a 10. gangplank would be an 8. poppy would be a 5 and garen is a 1.

from the scale of 1 to 10. easy->hard.

its quite obvious that poppy was overnerfed because she was getting picked in nearly every pro play match. even though trundle was a counterpick. I mean nautlius was being picked more than poppy at one point and he got a good nerf that didn't leave him at a bad spot but pushed him away a little. poppy got a massive nerf that pushed her away from us but it didn't affect pro play much. shes still being picked in most matches even though maokai and ekko are favored over her. I'd rather have a top lane tank being really strong at what she does than an ap mid lane mage doing her job better.

I'd argue that the variance in effectiveness of her ult is more than anything that happens on GP and Azir. The high end on Poppy ult is, like, removing the jungler and one other enemy from a baron contest so that your jungler can smitesteal and then your team can win a 4v3 instead of clearly losing a 4v5, and the low end is actually saving an enemy that should have been a free kill.

but thats has nothing to do with learning the champion shes simple you need to have good awareness and an idea of how the game works to do that.

You absolutely need to learn how to use that ult. The way it affects the field is something that no other champ in the game has and you need to learn when to snap-cast it in melee range or charge and launch the projectile as a skillshot, which then becomes very easy to whiff, and at what targets you need to fire it and when in the fight you can start charging without getting interrupted and aim so they won't just sidestep it.

MunchCrunchLunch2 votes

thats why 9/10 times pro players use her ult just for the knockup.

Any plans for changes on her?or leave her be?

Her win rate on experienced players is really strong. She's not underperforming.

Her overall winrate is still being dragged down by bandwagoners

Poppy could use a SMALL buff to her passive for late game

A good way to do this would be let its CD scale a little with LVL or let CDR effect the CD

Agreed. It's very unreliable and rather insignificant late game unless you get those rare snipes to finish the kill. I'd like to see both the shield and CD scale.

She needs the range returned to her passive and she will be fine

Ralanr1 votes

Why not the reset?

Why not the reset?

Reset on passive would be to much, making it scale with CDR could work

That would exacerbate the problem you're trying to solve (low winrate despite being a power pick in pro games) because that is power that very advanced players can take advantage of while the average player will be punished by the feature about as often as they benefit from it. Poppy would need to be balanced around the E Q Auto reset Empowered Auto trade to stay under control in pro games while most players in normals would only E Q Empowered Auto.

Give me the range return to the E or the auto reset and forget the passive.

Poppy is fun to play and quite amazing against many of the super mobile people. I love her support and am suprised it isnt registered

Ralanr5 votes

How do you play her support? I've never understood how that works.

Friendly Ram1 votes

You keep your adc safe and set up plays. Generally i pick her to counter leo braum or thresh sup or lucian vayne or graves adc. You just disrupt all their plays and wait for them to make a mistake. You can also poke pretty well with your shield and generally pin someone when they go to smash it. Also w cancels the lantern pull on thresh.

1Manchester1 votes

Yeah right protect the ADC. The first time I played poppy i went 18/6/9 while my support was like 1/5/6 . It felt so good to see enemy team run away from poppy support though .

MunchCrunchLunch1 votes

its pretty bad honestly. only as a counterpick against a support or two

Friendly Ram1 votes

Nah you're tanky as hell and have 3.5 forms of cc. It's fun and basically cancels any other tanky support in the game.

It's pretty difficult to play her support as you are very positional based. A decent bot lane won't stand next to walls very much and punish you for running in to get close. Your only reliable engage is with an adc that has some form of CC (ie. Vayne Condemn, Varus Ult) or flash stun. But once you do, the all-in potential is super strong. Dumbledoge (pro player in turkey) likes to play Support Poppy a lot, and he tends to be a roaming support more than a traditional duo lane support. Running to each lane creating ganks and saves with his ult.

Quepha1 votes

Poppy is strong, even in normal games she's considered a strong pick. A lot of players just don't appreciate or properly use the utility on her ult and it drags down her winrate.

You can't balance her around players that don't use her properly just like you can't balance Lee Sin around players who don't know how to play him properly.

I don't think any changes are needed.

Ralanr1 votes

I guess I can see that. She is incredibly punishing if you mess up her ult.

That's why 9/10x you insta cast it for the knock up CC. Significantly more reliable than the "kick them out" full cast. However, using the full cast ult is best for avoiding ganks and getting rid of the tanks so you can dive the backline (or the occasional fancy dragon/baron play)

You'll find people will interrupt the ult pretty frequently, if you have a bush nearby try to get into that right before you let the cast go so they cant' interrupt (or much less chance)

First of all, OP, thank you for bringing this up.

As a Poppy main with over 280k mastery points I can tell you that her overall effectiveness has dropped significantly since her recent nerfs. I feel it every time i play her, Particularly the auto reset. That being said, I've played her for so long that I'm very in-tune with her capabilities and limits and don't typically struggle too often with any particular matchup or role. She is a relatively simple champ to play, but definitely has a high skill cap now in order to be really effective.

Pre-nerf i was hovering around 100 S6 ranked games played around 60-65% winrate. Now i'm at 174 S6 ranked games played with 55% winrate. Which is probably very good compared to many other poppy players considering her winrate on champion.gg of 45.72%.

I still think she is one of the best, if not thee best all around tank in the game. Her kit (if mastered) her be effective against almost any champion and brings a load of CC and engage/disengage with her. This is why the pros still like her, even though her damage and ranges have dropped significantly, the utility she provides is still very strong. When you are in premades and can really count on your team, Supertank poppy is a great solution, particularly if you are the only tank.

However, This may be the old poppy in my speaking (hyper carry), but I still like having more damage in my build than the standard "super tank" poppy builds in higher elo. I feel I can really make an impact if I choose my battles well and turn the tides of the game. (particularly in Silver elo where you can't always count on your teammates)

It's not uncommon for me to go Thunderlords with these types of builds and I recommend trying them out!

Standard / Universal build: item 3009 item 3071 item 3025 item 3156 item 3068 item 3102

or (only if you're really fed) - with 10% CDR runes item 3111 item 3078 item 3812 item 3748 item 3068 item 3065

If you really want to have fun try item 3147 sometime. It actually works very well on her cause you all in with Stun Auto Q and pretty much kill in one combo.

Also, i too like playing her in the jungle (not as much anymore with the auto attack nerf, but still occasionally). I used to run warrior + Iceborn for instant 40% CDR. Worked great, but now that they have buffed Cinderhulk it's not a bad idea to run that instead.

i build the same way , plz give poppy new skin thanks

KarmasPolice1 votes

I also forgot to mention in my jungle comment below, that I take summoner 6 instead of summoner 4 now on her. I feel it significantly better on her.

Vicarious1171 votes

I do honestly think she was slightly overnerfed, in that they simultaneously nerfed multiple aspects of her kit in one fell swoop instead of working her down to a balanced level.

But even so I think she's still pretty good, I'd play her if I didn't have to worry about so many counterpicks she just can't deal with now, but if you can pick her outside of those she performs quite well.
