Even if you have high ping or just suck tank stats are innately useful because

1. if the enemy can't kill you you aren't feeding them gold
2. damage that is being done to you isn't being done to your allies. if you are useless and you know it you might as well let the enemy focus you especially if you have a hefty health pool and resists.
3. tanks are useful in sieging towers. If you have enough armor and health you can ignore the first 2 tiers of towers letting your team dive the enemy or force them off tower.
4. tanks can zone. Just standing between that assassin and your adc with that intimidating 4k health 300 armor is going to make them think twice about jumping in. It also helps to block skill shots that can really chunk squishies.

Hope this helps and for all that is holy don't do what that other guy suggested. Having no defensive stats with high ping is just asking to be farmed for gold.
