With preseason 5, will you guys actually give Atma's Impaler any attention?

I can't remember the last time Atma's was a good item except on Jarvan and MAYBE Garen. Once the passive was nerfed to 1.5% of max health instead of 2%, the item's only function became meaningless.

High cost-efficiency doesn't make it a good item, Riot. Why do you think so few people use it? Because its slot-efficiency is one of the worst in the game for a late-game item.

Seriously, give Atma's Impaler some degree of usefulness. Otherwise it's a niche that will never see use.

It needs a secondary stat other than crit.

The vast majority of the champions who would consider building Atma's want it for the armor/AD combination of stats, but don't generally benefit much from crit. While it's a very gold efficient item that gold efficiency goes right out the window once you realize that from it's cost is 900g in crit that is only marginally useful to your champion.

You're right, high-cost efficiency DOES NOT make it a good item, when the stats are almost irrelevant to every champ. in the game not to mention it occupies a valuable slot that you could fill with a more relevant and powerful item. It needs and overhaul in terms of stats so it's more relevant, and an increased gold cost would not be anything short of a good idea to help make up for the buffed atma's stats.

Think if Riot pays any attention to Atma's Impaler, its going to be to put it out of its misery. After 2 or 3 seasons of it being in a bad state, I don't think there is another fate for it barring its passive being adjusted and put on another item.

Until Riot can solve the problem of making Atma's a good ADC item while avoiding it being a Godly bruiser item, it will remain in it's current state.

bloodmoth7 votes

What makes you think it is supposed to be a good ADC item? Its design screams bruiser. it converts a bruiser stat into a bruiser stat, if anything it needs to be embraced as a bruiser item and have non bruiser stats removed. the only champs that will ever want to use this are bruisers as they tend to get HP anyway.

junglerboy166 votes

Agreed, Atma's should NEVER be an ADC item, and was never meant to be. It only has crit right now because it is an extremely antiquated item, and that is the only thing that makes it worth anything to an ADC.

Kuroi863 votes

That was the original intent behind Atma's, an armor items for ADC, similar to Maw of Malmortius and Mercurial Scimitar. However anything good for an ADC is great for a bruiser or assassin. In the case of Atma's, it's godly for bruisers.

Why it shouldn't be a bruiser item... Sion. Renekton. Nasus.

I don't know about you, but a bruiser carry is a scary thing.

bloodmoth1 votes

I think that riots stance on bruisers is a little screwed up, they make defensive items for ADC's that honestly DONT need them, then get shitty that the class that does (bruisers) need them buys them -_-

Bruisers are champs that cant avoid damage so need to buy damage and defensive stats, but they basically give them all the damage they need for free with overloaded stats and make them build tank items. if they had half the tanky stats they need and half the offensive stats they need, they could buy hybrid offensive/tanky items, like what you expect atmas to be.

If it was meant for ADC's they did a terrible, terrible job. seriously whoever designed that has to be the worst item designer in game, if they want a scaling defensive item for ADC's you do it the other way around, bonus HP for AD, so you build glass cannon and get some defenses out of getting your intended stat, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND

this incarnation is designed for bruisers through and through, its just a very shitty version of what they should get.

as for why it shouldnt? that is the exact opposite, thats an example of why it SHOULD be balanced for bruisers. you make an item that converts HP to AD, you are making it for champs that make full use of both, and it synergises well with the champs that have high HP. and bruisers should have decent damage, they arent carries but they arent tanks. if they dont deal damage you are better off getting a tanky CC bot.

Kuroi861 votes

The reason Atma's was made was to give a defensive option to an ADC that fell behind in lane, it's a defensive option for the AD to try and get back into the game. (Defense scales faster than offense, offense scales harder as the game goes on.) It wasn't meant to be an awesome item, but a simple one that could give an ADC a chance to get back into the game from a less than stellar laning phase.

And really, an item that scales up HP based on AD... that would be even more of a bruiser item than the current Atma's.

Bruisers DO have good damage, they count among the strongest early game champs in the entire game. Lee Sin, Vi, Darius, Renekton, Pantheon, Garen, ect. They are all varying degree's of the fighter (bruiser) class which excels in building a mix of offense and defense. The catch is that they are insanely difficult to balance due to how easy it would be for any one of them to turn into a must pick/ban choice. Bruisers are meant to push the early game advantage, snowball, and push for an early victory. Giving Atma's a good scaling in it's current condition or the one you suggest, would increase the bruisers power throughout nearly every phase of the game. Heck, combo Atma's and Frozen Mallet and with good positioning and flanking you would never see a bruiser fall off mid game again.

bloodmoth1 votes

have it scale off bonus AD, problem solved, point is, its design is terrible no matter what, crit isnt a fallback stat, armor isnt going to help much either without HP to back it up. a cheap item with HP per bonus AD and AD would be a better fallback item for an adc, which dont need defensive items anyway because they have range, meaning that if they play skillfully they can avoid pretty much all damage, bruisers on the other hand cant, they are forced to soak up all the damage.

Hell, nothing on that item would help an adc whos behind, it would just punish them for building such a PoS item, crit? nope, armor? not without HP, AD/HP? are you kidding? when did they get the chance to build HP to benefit from this?

also why should bruisers fall off in the late game? they already have to put up with hyperscaling marksmen, CC maxed mages and supports and tanks, why shouldnt they get some form of catch up item? they fall off for other reasons, they should still be relevant though

Kuroi861 votes

I had considered altering it's scaling to give a percentage of the champions hp per every 50 bonus AD that the champion had built. But I haven't had a chance to really look into how that would scale, so idk lol.

Every little bit helps. Besides, Atma's, to my knowledge, was before ADC itemization was so firmly hammered into stone and unbendable. I'm not saying it was a good item, but to my knowledge, it was intended for the ADC, not the bruiser.

A good bruiser doesn't totally fall off. I've had games with Renekton or Pantheon where I was still a force to be reckoned with even at the fifty minute mark. I've seen Lee Sin players utilizing his utility to such a degree that he's still to be feared even in the WAY late game. Certain aspects of the bruiser DO fall off though, as they are meant to. As a bruiser, you're building a lot of tankiness, so your damage will slowly fall off, meaning late game you can no longer burst squishy champs as easily as before, doesn't mean that your combo of burst and DPS can't net you kills still. As for why, it's to balance out the class. If they were strong in all phases of the game, then why bother picking any other class? It's risk/reward, it's how Riot has been steering the game for a long time now. It keeps them from being overbearing.

bloodmoth1 votes

Well if it scaled off bonus AD, and gave back fairly ok returns, you would have a high dps build with a bit of bonus defense. bruisers would still need more defensive stats than it would offer and wouldnt be able to make full use of it because they would need resists too. there you go, ADC defensive item that bruisers wouldnt want.

I find it weird that it was designed for ADCs, its so terribly inefficient for them. what were they thinking!

yeah they do still have uses, not saying they lose all worth, just wondering why they cant stay relevant. Thing is, most other champs have triple scaling come late game: ADCs have crit, AS, AD and arPen, Mages have CDR, SpellPen, Rabadons, AP, Tanks, in a way, get CDR(more CC) Health and resists, they all get stats that work with eachother and compliment each other, while bruisers need stats that are completely irrespective of eachother, like armor and AD. if you could bridge the gap a little and have a little extra multiplication, I think that would be a very good thing, which i feel is what atmas should do, or could do. i mean bruisers are never going to be dealing vayne levels of damage, but they should still feel good. they still cant avoid damage, they still have their weaknesses late game that ADCs and mages tend to lose

Also the only reasons bruisers are 'good' early is because riot has to pump them up with free stats otherwise they would be the worst (melee ranged adcs?). I feel like they find problems with things that could be solutions, like atmas not working for adcs because bruisers would use it perfectly when they are band aiding their power because they are too weak. they have found the exact stats they need to make them work but dont want to implement them for whatever reason.

Kuroi861 votes

The item was created early on in the days of League, so Riot was still not entirely sure where they were going to go with most of the items in the game. Atma's was made for a simple purpose, it filled that purpose, too well. Until they figure out a way to make it more efficient for marksmen without buffing assassins or bruisers, it will remain in it's current state.

Bruisers CAN stay relevant into the late game, it is simply harder to do so, as it should be. The trade off for the early game power they possess, is that they need to be smarter about their positioning mid/late game in order to be the most effective.
Ever seen a Garen flank the enemy team, flash a wall and spin all over the enemy team while they are CC locked by the rest of Garen' team?

Actually, bruisers CAN deal Vayne levels of damage. o.0
Ever gone troll and pulled a full AD Renekton? If you can get on top of them... they are dead. The bruiser is the way it is because it's meant to work in a specific way. Yes, Riot could buff them to do other things, but then they wouldn't fulfill the purpose for which they were built. Bruisers are the ticking time bomb in team fights. Champs like Darius or Renekton jump into the middle of the enemy team and just start hitting everything they can, they're near impossible to bring down without focused fire due to their tankiness, but at the same time they are dealing out impressive levels of damage thanks to their high base and scaling abilities. They only have. One. Weak point. Positioning and kiting. Each class in league has it's weak point. Marksmen are weak against burst damage, tanks weak against high levels of dps, assassins especially weak against CC, bruisers weak against kiting. Each class has the means to overcome these weaknesses, it's simply a matter of knowing how.

bloodmoth1 votes

Im completely fine with classes having weaknesses, but i think its a little cheesy that they get a stat disadvantage along with their main one simply because its late-game. i dont really like the idea of champs winning phases by default, i dont mind disadvantages, but players should have fun at all stages of the game Imo. im just argueing for bruisers to be able to do what they are meant to do at all stages rather than falling off like a rock just because they have high early game stats.

About bruisers dealing that level of damage: thats not playing renekton as a bruiser though, thats playing him as an assassin, which does deal ridonkulous damage i wont argue, but at that point he isnt a bruiser.

Kuroi861 votes

I wouldn't necessarily say they are at any stat disadvantage, if anything, they are the most well rounded in terms of offense/defense come late game. I don't think it's so much that they really fall off, but that their effectiveness slacks off and it becomes more difficult for them to fight in ways that are advantageous to them. At that point you have to be smarter about how you play in the late game.

Yep, a bruiser doesn't deal assassin levels of damage, they have good burst, but it's also their dps, the constant damage that they can lay down that makes them so scary. It's been said about a hand full of champs, but I think bruisers really identify with this statement. The bruiser is supposed to be a catch 22, either you focus the squishy carry and let the bruiser kill you, or you focus the tanky bruiser and let the carry kill you.

If anything, I think the better solution would just be to get rid of item 3005 entirely. Its core function (turning stats into more stats) offers no real additional gameplay and its intended niche (giving offense for building defense) is unhealthy to bruisers and to the game in general, since it overloads on stats a role that is already far too dependent on stats over mechanics. The passive, which is the only reason people buy the item, cannot be fixed through number adjustments, and picking this item is either a must (when its stats are good) or a trap (when its stats are bad), so removing it entirely would help bruisers more than anything else.

Change the passive to an active that deals damage based on your health pool, remove crit cloak from it and replace with either a belt or a kindlegem so it has hp on it, and you'd get something that works for bruiser but not on adc, since adc need sustained damage.

Not in a position to do gold math currently, but using the two build path I talked about:

Chain Vest + Kindlegem + combine cost= 50 armor, 350 hp, 10% CDR Unique Active: impale target for 75 (+8% of your max hp) damage over 4 seconds. Reveals the target for the duration of the DoT.

Chain Vest + Giant's Belt + Combine cost = 60 Armor, 500 hp, same unique active.

its a great item and It has plenty of potential in the league, Its great on champs such as sion, mundo, garen Its just a late game focused ite. At 3333 health it gives as much as a bf sword. You can go alot higher hp than that so you get more ad.

darkdill1 votes

That might be cost-effective, but slot-effective? Hell no. There are other items with better passive effects (i.e. Randuin's) that players want more than 45 armor and a bit of AD that requires you to have gotten a Warmog's first to be effective.

junglerboy161 votes

But that is just the problem! it is geared towards late game based on its scaling with HP, but it is INCREDIBLY inefficient if left in your full build. your argument is like saying giants belt is good late game because it has high HP. Sure it does, but other items have more of EVERYTHING that a bruiser could want. If you want AD for a bruiser, get a Maw of Malmortius, the magic shield is better than any crit, and you get more AD as a base stat w/o needing to buy a full warmogs and 3 other health items first.

the only thing i fear with changing atmas is the effect on garen and gangplank, who need it for the crit. That stat is the first one everyone asks to be removed and this would make garen especially sad with virtually zero other good crit items for him after IE.

junglerboy161 votes

That is a problem of Riot balancing a champ around poor itemization. While Garen kind of does need Atma's about how it is, that is only because he has been balanced around the fact that people build it on him. If they changed/removed Atma's, I am certain that the one or two champs who still use it regularly will receive compensatory buffs, in the same way that they buffed a few champs after nerfing Lich Bane.

Ale non è male1 votes

Nope, Garen players build Atma's as consequence of the rest of his itemization. Garen rush Sunfire and SV because they fit so well his kit that they are almost obliged to do it so. By doing it so, they build 850 health with the first two items. Then garen could chose to either got tankier(which means add further health) or chose to get more damage, and in that case he has The Black Cleaver that fit perfectly with his E spin that gives him other 200 health., so even in the most offensive scenario for Garen he had + 1050 bonus health with 2 items left(counting 3 items + boots) to add to his base health Every thing in Garen's kit encourage to build something that contains health in it, and building Atma's was only the consequence of building things that fit so well with Garen's kit Riot did not balance garen around Atma, it's just that was too smart to build Atma on hit before health items were nerfed that it became the optimal way(or one of the best way) to itemize Garen

bloodmoth1 votes

Its a cost efficient item with late game scaling thats useless in both situations.

Cost efficiency only means anything in the early game, atmas stats are armor crit and AD/HP. only stat thats useful for early game is armor as crit is too unreliable to be meaningful and lacks multipliers.

Come lategame and its still slot inefficient, you dont want this in your build lategame. the AD per HP it offers is pathetic.

I see no reason to ever buy this crap on anyone, you are always better off buying a bf sword and chain vest.

If they do rework it, they need to focus what it is or should be. the crit has to go, it should offer HP and AD/HP, wouldnt care if any other stat is on it. balance it as a bruiser item.

Ancient Wisp1 votes

I forgot it was even an item, it's components can all just go into more efficient stuff.

junglerboy161 votes

Riot has weakened Atma's ON PURPOSE. It is sort of like how they nerf away champions that they don't have the time/resources/desire to deal with, like Poppy and old Sion while they worked on his relaunch, I wouldn't expect Riot to ever bring back Atma's in any similar role to what it has now, it will probably get a total reboot.

Ale non è male1 votes

item 3005 problem isn't in the item itself, its problem is that item 3153 on-hit passive became so powerful and pouplar that no one is building massive amount of health anymore on their champ, and thus it make no sense for anyone to build it You need about 4000 health to make it effective, and there are very few champs nowadays that build up to 4000 health because of BoTRK, even health based champs often don't get that far, even buffing it's passive to something like 1,75% it would not have that much of an effect until people don't start building health again Let's not foget that Atma went untouched from season 1, and it was still used more or less frequently until BoTRK rework in S3

336KMlmYm91 votes

People need to get off this idea that you need massive amounts of health for Atma's to be worthwhile. You need all of 1300hp for it to be gold efficient, and every champ has that by level 13, some reaching it by level 7. It's an extremely efficient item at 3000hp. But who wants to spend a significant amount of gold on AD/Crit/Armor? AD/Crit is great for ADCs. AD/Armor is great for bruisers. Crit/Armor is bad on almost everyone.

There are a number of items with less than synergistic stats. But at least something like Nashor's Tooth has a niche. Garen is practically the only champion that can effectively use all of Atma's stats.

Ale non è male1 votes

Sir, you should learn the meaning of slot efficiency AD/Armor is a good combo to have for both bruisers and tanks, and Atma offers it, but it's clear that 20 AD and 45 Armor(aka the 1300 hp you are talking about) are not slot efficient. and not even 45 AD/45 Armor are slot efficient(aka 3000 health) item 3156 is a situational item, and it's 60 AD/40 MR + a passive that gives you up to 35 AD when you drop below 30% and a shield that absorb magic damage You can see how even to be a situational item like Maw, Atma's requires at least about 4000 health to have some kind of slot efficiency, and 4000 health are very rare to see nowadays because of BoTRK and health items being weaker than what they should be

Even counting crit out of the equation(and crit is a problem because it's unlikely you'll go building some other item with crit chance if you are building health, outside of maybe TF that still pushes your critical chance to 25% only), is clear how atma's problem is that people don't build health for certain reasons, and if they don't build health they'll surely not build Atma's as it will never be slot efficient at 45 AD and 45 armor even if they dump crit for some other kind of passive(unless it's the best passive in the game) The whole ADC/armor/health itemizations neds to be rebalanced, after that you can consider what to do with Atma

336KMlmYm91 votes

My argument is that Atma's isn't weak because it's inefficient or because it requires a ridiculous amount of health stacking to be effective, which it very clearly doesn't. Rather the issue is because it has an undesirable combination of stats. I'm only correcting people's assertion that its bad without health stacking because that line of thinking leads to the item simply being given more of the same stats or lowering the cost of the item rather than addressing the real problem, which is that it's a bruiser item that heavily features a stat few bruisers want. It doesn't need a lower cost. It doesn't need higher AD. It needs the crit chance replaced by AD/CDR/MS/Armor/MR/Health, something a bruiser would want to build anyway.

I'm well aware of what slot efficiency is. But the only reason Atma's would ever be considered slot inefficient is because you, me, and everyone else simply dismisses the crit because we really didn't want it anyway. If the crit were worth while then Atma's would be plenty slot efficient outside of the late game scenario in a longer duration game where you were actually finishing a six item build.

Tengrichan1 votes

I do think too that crit has to go and a new stat have to be added preferably HP.

New Atma's Impaler:

item 1031 + item 1011 720g + 1000g + 680g = 2400g

Stats: +45 armor +380 HP

Passive UNIQUE: You gain attack damage equal to 1.3% of your maximum health. (Reduced from 1.5% )

[NEW] Active UNIQUE: Gain a shield equal to 50 + ( 10% of current HP ) which lasts for 5 seconds.(100 sec cooldown)

Gold efficiency: 45 armor = 900g 380 HP = 1010g Total gold value = 1910g

Passive gold value: 13 attack damage (for every 1000 Health) = 468g

The base stats are 79.5% gold efficient. (71.7% old value)

100% gold efficient when the champion has 1047 maximum HP. So the moment you buy this item it becomes gold efficient.

The unique passive grants the same amount of attack damage as a B. F. Sword (45) at 3461 health. (Old value was 3333 HP for 50 AD)

Shield gold value: best case scenario with 3000 HP : 50 + 300 = 350 Effective HP which have a value of 931g worst case scenario with 1 HP : 50 + 0 = 50 Effective HP which have a value of 133g.

Gold value of the shield with 3000 HP : 133g - 931g Gold value of the shield with 4000 HP : 133g - 1197g

Other version could be is instead granting shield it would grant increased max HP ratio.

item 1031 + item 1011 720g + 1000g + 680g = 2400g

Stats: +45 armor +380 HP

Passive UNIQUE: You gain attack damage equal to 1% of your maximum health. (Reduced from 1.5% )

[NEW] Active UNIQUE: For 5 seconds you gain attack damage equal to 1.75% of your maximum health.(100 sec cooldown)

This means if you have 2000 HP with the passive you gain 20 AD. If you activate the item the ratio goes up to 1.75% so you gain 35 AD(+ 15 bonus AD) for 5 seconds.

Gold efficiency: 45 armor = 900g 380 HP = 1010g Total gold value = 1910g

Passive gold value: 10 attack damage (for every 1000 Health) = 360g

The base stats are 79.5% gold efficient. (71.7% old value)

100% gold efficient when the champion has 1361 maximum HP. Bruiser's base hp generally reaches this threshold around lvl11-12.

The unique passive grants the same amount of attack damage as a B. F. Sword (45) at 4500 health. (Old value was 3333 HP for 50 AD)

Active gold value: 17.5 attack dmg (for every 1000 health) = 630g

With 3000 HP and with the active you gain 52.5 AD.

Numbers can be changed around of course but you get the idea behind the changes. First version is defensive oriented while the second is offensive.

Thoughts?

Ale non è male1 votes

It make no sense, if you want an armor + HP item you'll keep buying item 3143 item 3005 's purpose is clear, the problem is to incentivate people to build health

Reduceitem 3153 's on hit-passive damage to 6% of current healt and Atma is probably yet back in the game, even though as very situational and marginal item. If you do that and buff back item 3083 's health regen to 1,25%-1,5% Warmog is back in the game too and Atma became a more interesting choice. if you do both the things above and buff Atma's passive AD to 1,75% of the maximum health and Atma becomes a very viable option

junglerboy161 votes

They have already confirmed that they are changing warmog's into more of a "fast recovery item" where your hp5 from it, while lower in combat, triples out of combat. Atma's as an item has no place in this game, period. it should be roomed and reworked a just plain buried in the obsolete item graveyard. Its stats are incoherent, its build path is incoherent, its power spike potential is incoherent, it is just a relic of the days when you would build 3 gp10 items and snowball into late game with philo stone heart of gold and avarice blade giving you huge free gold. Atma's also incentivizes you to build HP, but to get enough to make having one worth it come late game, it would require taking the slot it was in and getting a huge health item.

Ale non è male1 votes

I don't see why getting a huge health item should be a bad thing for the champs that have to build health like tanks its stats are clear, its purpose is clear, the item is made to give a little bit of damage to the champs that are forced to build health and armore because of their nature as champs I don't see why it should completely disapper, if anything health has lost a lot of its value and if they want to balance the game they should rebalance now towards building health(a thing that was discouraged by BoTRK being so powerful and health related item becoming all weaker) At most you can argue how avarice blade build path and the critical chance stat could be a bit tricky as they are right now, but that's pretty much the only thing you can say about Atma's

junglerboy161 votes

You don't understand what I mean, when I said It requires getting a huge health item in its slot, I didn't mean high health items are bad, I meant that in order to have enough HP to make it valuable, it requires you to not have the Atma's in order to get enough health.

Zanphyra1 votes

I've said this before and I will say this again. They should raise the cost and buff the passive/stats. It seems to be a late game orientated item for 2k gold that builds out of a gold item which makes no sense.

The only way to allow them to buff the passive to be less useless is to make it cost more so rushing it isn't an option. Remove the Avarice Blade and up the cost. Raise the raw stats/passive value, remove the crit.

336KMlmYm91 votes

Why is a late game item building from a gold gen item confusing? Early game you get a gold gen item, which helps push you to your late game, and late game when you need the item slot your gold gen item has a useful upgrade path. It makes perfect sense, it's just the the combination of stats is highly undesirable, which in turn lowers the actual value of the item considerably.

DJ Hatsune Miku1 votes

I think if the actual stats weren't terrible it'd be fine. Make it like ruby crystal+long sword+cloth armor and make the item give hp+armor then make the passive bonus health instead of max. That way it can fill a similar niche as mallet as "defensive item with a little bit of offense."

IMHO. It works well enough with this build order.

Because its slot-efficiency is one of the worst in the game for a late-game item.

That is ironic for an item that is supposed to scale with a stat.

yes they'll give it attention by removing it

Actually, it is sadly gonna be removed.

What I would do is this:

Atma's Impaler Chain Vest + Brutalizer Cost: 3000 gold 45 armor Unique Passive: 20 Armorpen Unique Passive: 10% CDR Unique Passive: Gain AD based onto 2.0% of your max HP.

This way, finally, an AD item builds into it. And with 4k HP, you get 80 AD out of it. But this is now rather balanced, as you also have to build AD to get that and the prize is way higher.
