No dialogue about Kog'Maw

Yeah, yeah we know Vayne is busted, Yasuo is a brat, and Teemo is the devil himself. Keep talking about them, we all agree they're unhealthy don't we? Great, let's move onto something less obvious.

No one on the Boards talks about Kog'Maw. The ones that do comment don't even play him. You provide evidence that works only on paper but when you play a Normal game, you don't choose Kog'Maw. You don't go into your game and build Rageblade, BoRK, Runaans and become a "late game hyper carry, destroyer of all teams". You don't go into your game and build Triforce into Phantom Dancer knowing that both items were different in S5 and S4. Matter of fact, everything was different in S5 and S4. Team Comps were a thing back then, now? Not so much. The meta and mentality has become "I will do whatever I can to one-shot anything that is breathing". That's why half the season half the ADCs built like Assassins. The ADCs weren't butt hurt that assassins could do insane damage in a few seconds, they took that insane damage in a few seconds along with their scaling and applied it in range. Burst, Burst, Burst. This is probably why the games are so shorter. Shorter in the sense of not being on the rift that often. Instead you're staring at a gray screen, browsing through "how do i counter jhin?" forums because he crit you for 2k. Maybe it was your fault? Why didn't you build Randuins 2nd item you idiot. ADCs don't build defensive anymore. Why? Burst, burst, burst. "I will do whatever I can do one-shot anything that is moving". There are no longer extended duels where Vayne tumbles and outplays Lucian, where Draven dances with Ezreal in a DPS war. No, it has no longer become interesting. Instead you have an MF that builds armor pen to Ult away your team to Timbuktu. Where Vayne tumbles and crits you for 500 at level 7. Where Jhin hits you with that sweet, sweet 4th auto applying all the amor penetration he's amassed (oh and along with the crit). This is what we've been talking about.

What about Kog'Maw you ask? Idk, you'll probably never see him in one of your games. Chances are you'll see one in 280 games. He's become such a rare specimen. When you do see Kog'Maw in your game, feel free to take a dump on him. He doesn't scale as hard as everyone says he does, he is often confused as to what items he gets, his team probably wont care because its not S5 or S4, his support is probably a Zyra or Brand that will solo carry the lane (its best to focus them because Kog'Maw doesn't do that much damage). I'm serious, if you see a Kog'Maw in your game and you lose, you may want to reconsider how you lost what could have been the easiest game of your life. It is freelo, genuinely freelo.

Kog'Maw's Unique Attributes:

  • Tank Killer
  • Late game monster
  • Mixed damage dealer
  • Long range ult that secure kills
  • DPS DPS DPS

Let's not kid ourselves. What the hell happened to Kog'Maw? It's almost as if you took everything in the world and put it together half-assed.

Vayne is far better tank killer and overall a brilliant ADC that is more viable than my grandma's cooking. Twitch is a late game monster rat that will shred gouda all over your team Corki isn't even that good but still somehow does better than Kog'Maw regardless of hardly being touched (probably a good thing) Literally any other ADC besides Kog'Maw has a better ult than his current ult. Corki, Jinx, Draven, Ezreal, Caitlyn, and AD off-meta, probably banned already Bard. "but you can repeatedly shoot Kog'Maw ult forever" If this is truly, honestly your only argument, you've never played Kog'Maw. It lacks punctuality and effectiveness. It is hardly an execute and a limp poke. I have a better poking ability than Kog'Maw ult. DPS? Okay, you got me. SIKE. You honestly thing Kog'Maw has DPS? On paper, sure. He outdamages everyone. He outdamages Karthus with a 30 second Ult. BUT, have you ever been alive long enough to "out damage" other ADCs. It's strange how specially squishy Kog'Maw is, he dies faster than any other ADC I've played. "But he requires a team to cater to his needs" Don't make me repeat myself.

This brings me to my last point. League of Legends is a team game. Everyone works together to pitch in during the team fight to hopefully and eventually win the game. The game doesn't revolve around Kog'Maw though. No one is truly there to hold his hand. It doesn't matter how many shields you put on him, how many heals he is given, if he dies then that's it. Protect the X compositions are not efficient. If you make X your only damage dealer and rely solely on X to do everything during the game you're not really playing a healthy game. Suppose X dies, what do you do then? You're useless, remember? This is why no one plays Protect the X. It's not fun for the other 4 people, it gets boring and repetitive and often renders negative results. Riot keeps forcing Kog'Maw into this position making him a terrible pick over all. "Balance for the LCS". He saw the spotlight a couple of times, but was constantly outclassed. If the "Pros" don't play Kog'Maw, there is probably a reason. Is he bad? Maybe, who knows. Is he just a shitty pick? Probably so. His kit doesn't flow compared to other ADCs, his itemization is a mystery in itself, and his Creators don't even test him to see how he is doing. Seriously, if Riot actually tested Kog'Maw thoroughly instead of glancing at a paper full of numbers and % signs then signing off on it they would see the problem.

If no one talks about a champion, by no one I mean all you people, is the champion balanced? Are people even playing the champion? Is there a voice for these kinds of things?

Or are we too busy talking about potential problems about a champion that hasn't even been introduced into the Live game?

Someone told me Kog'maw was a monster after Rageblade and BORK. Nah. He's better after you stack your Archangel's and Rylai's.

Archangels and Rylias are extremely reliable as apposed to Rageblade and BoRK. Rageblade requires stacks, max attack speed (to benefit from passive efficiently) at least 8 aa with the passive. BoRK requires people to be closer to you since its range seems to be 450 while Kog'Maw's max attack range is at 700 (?) max rank. And to be honest if they are as close as 450 range, you're probably already dead. This is why he is played AP because he is safe at a distance and able to exert his full power. I don't necessarily think its abuse since Kog'Maw has no hard cc, no move speed passive, and no blink/escapes.

Yep. It's why I'm starting to main AP Kog. He forces you to learn positioning and map awareness, or else you get popped faster than a pimple before a hot date.

Riot's got some AP Kog nerfs in the queue, the ratio on his E will be taking a pretty big hit. They've made it pretty apparent that they don't like AP Kog, which is a real shame since AP Kog is hilariously fun to play.

That's a load of Alistar

AP Kog is no worse than Xerath or Vel'Koz.

Eh, take it up with Riot. They're the ones who said he's the definition of an unhealthy champion.

Can confirm.

He was a big problem with "protect the ADC" teams in LCS or "wait until AP Kog hits 16 for the long range nuke" teams. Without E-sports he wouldn't be so nerfed. Other champions in this situation - Azir Kalista

As someone who plays kogmaw build BF -> runans -> IE.

Its the best build, ignore botrk triforce garbage.

NodirjonSattarov2 votes

You've literally played him once in the last 21 days. Is this how you justify everything?

Dracocrash1 votes

ive played him ENOUGH, since his revert.

Geshultz1 votes

Actually from playing him a decent amount. I been finding his best build is BF sword into Stattk shiv into IE in which it gives kog'maw a strong mid game powerspike similar to vayne's powerspike. I just basically ignore rageblade+ BORK because they don't do enough to justify the gold cost. When IE+SS is 1k gold cheaper+ does more DPS/burst overall then BORK+ Rageblade.

it confuses me why Riot is forcing him back into the problematic on-hit position that got him nerfed in the first place. On-hit under efficient without a huge amount of attack speed. this would require kog maw to be level 18, with BoRK, Runaans, and Rageblade (6 stacks) to be at max attack speed. That is so unreliable because half the games played dont even make it to level 18. Even if you do make it to level 18 you're bound to get popped by other full build ADCs, Assassins, and Mages. I like your build because it focuses on mid game where Kog'Maw used to be very good in with Triforce. Triforce itself is a midgame item but the current version isn't for Kog'Maw since he can't scale with Crit. I will have to try your build out.

How did the build feel for you. When playing it? Also what I found with On hit kog'maw is that its damage is so unrelible in a team fight as it requires a massive amount of setup compared to just building 3 crit items in a row then Boots+ Blood thirster+ mecurial scimitar and just being a longer ranged vayne essentially that is way safer build then going for something like Bork+ Rageblade which takes 2 items slots and that they both don't provide any protection against divers or enough damage early enough to justify buying either item.

Damage was justifiable and reliable. I felt like I was actually doing damage in team fights. I agree with you on the on-hit part. It's what part of my original post was about. On hit isn't good unless you have high attack speed and other elements. The great thing about the build is that the ult does quite a bit of damage when theyre low. On hit doesn't provide that power in the ult because you don't build AD

That is good. to hear. I feel like the easiest way for Riot to fix kog'maw is to add an ad Ratio to his w,q and e would help make him a viable hybrid AD caster with strong on hit damage.

If Riot really wanted Kog to be a late-game hyper-carry they should be giving his W either crit interaction or a significant bonus AD ratio.

If they want him to be a mid-game power house then buffing his base damage in some capacity is the way to go (what Riot is doing right now).

The main danger with buffing Kog's base damage is that TanKoggy is a thing. I've never been able to get a clear read on how Riot feels about Kog functioning effectively as a ranged Juggernaut, but the stronger his base damage gets the more powerful this build becomes (Wit's+Rage+situational tank gear). I was sort of infamous over on Dominion for my TanKog and now that I've finally finished mourning Dominion's passing I've been rolling my old stand-by on Twisted Treeline.

It still works. Kicking Kog's %HP damage up to 7% from 6% will make it work even harder.

See, I still think that actually supporting TanKog would be a healthier route than focusing all their efforts on the Juggermaw comp (though, as it happens, anything that benefits Juggermaw benefits TanKoggy more). Because lets face it, glass cannon Marksmen Kog has always been absurdly risky. Putting that much trust in your team is downright dangerous. Self-reliant Marksmen are far more popular and always will be. As a result, the only way to make glass Kog attractive is to make his damage so overwhelming that you would have to be stupid not to pick him.

And we've all seen how that turns out.

TanKoggy and AP Kog are both largely self-reliant builds. One through bulk and the other through sheer range. Riot has made it pretty clear that they hate AP Kog. Which is why I've been trying to get a read on how they feel about TanKoggy. They're destroying AP Kog with E nerfs. And the only way to destroy TanKoggy would be by gutting his W base damage and making it scale with crit chance. But then what would Riot be left with? A hyper-carry with knife-edge balance who will invariably lag behind Vayne and Twitch? Do we really want that?

maybe you're just bad at kog'maw idk

NodirjonSattarov1 votes

The difference in the each Kog'Maw game you've played is drastic. It means that you are either playing inconsistently or the people you're up against are inconsistent. Suppose you can control your gameplay, it must mean the enemy team is the inconsistent one.

Additionally, the games you seem to win are games where every laner is doing well and look at your kill participation and damage dealt.

Maybe I am the bad one.
