As someone who played a lot of Irelia, I loved Zephyr. As the game currently is, with level 3 boots gone and homeguard being a game mechanic rather than a buyable upgrade, Zephyr would see far more play. Zephyr had a very strong niche, whereas Poacher's Dick is just another iteration of Rito's failed concept of rewarding counter-jungling.

It's time Rito admits the Poacher's items are a failed idea and will never be viable without an unhealthy level of power.

Would you really buy Zepher?

Lets think about it this way: Irelia pretty much always defaults into a Trinity rush. After that point, you have the option for more damage or going tanky. If youre going tanky, you wouldnt buy Zepher. Currently with the strength of BotRK, it seems almost stupid to not get a BotRK over a Zephyr. At earliest, youre looking at a 4th item item Zephyr. However, most people I know opt for a little bit of tank stats (GA/Steraks/Maw) or full tank stats (Randiuns/Spirit Visage) at that point. And as for its usefulness, Id say that it still isnt ever the best choice - all it does is give AD, AS, Tenacity, and CDR. I would rather get a Wits End for the triple threat of AD/Magic/True damage.

The only time I see Zephyr being a "good" purchase is if you sell your boots, which is the exact reason it was removed in the first place. An item thats only viable as a 7th item isnt really good. I mean, you could leave it in the game but to say "Zepher would see far more play" is a definite overstatement. Zephyr already saw that same amount of play when it was around - when people were full build with 3k+ gold.

While Poachers isnt very rewarding, it does have its niche as the counterjungle AD item. It doesnt get used because its too inefficient, but the niche is still there (I personally think a health-stacking item that turns into a Giants Belt would be nice). On the other hand, Zephyr doesnt really have a niche, unless you think 60+ minute end game builds are a niche that needs to be filled.

You don't seem to understand WHY Irelia bought Zephyr. Irelia is of course a dive-champ; jump onto the ADC, take him out of the fight then act as a pseudo-tank taking the enemy's focus for your team.

Now as an Irelia player would know and it's clear YOU don't know, the common trick to do this was by utilizing the reset on her Q. Q to caster minion, 1-shot it, get the reset, Q to enemy ADC. Now, if you actually knew Irelia's numbers, you'd know after a point the caster minions scale just outside of that range with just Tri-force, but the 25 attack from pickaxe is the cheapest option to keep this play possible for the longest amount of time during the game. As you also don't realize, pickaxe has very shitty options for what it upgrades into and even fewer options now that Last Whisper is no longer one of them. Like you said, Zephyr gave Tenacity, CDR, AS, AD AND MOVEMENT SPEED(which you conveniently overlooked.) Literally all 5 of these are amazing stats for Irelia, if you knew her kit. The Tenacity in particular is a notable point, giving a desperately needed alternative to Mercury Treads which Summoner's Rift now has ZERO other options. It opened up the possibilities to have Tenacity while still being able to buy Zerkers, Swifties, or even Lucidity, but most importantly NINJA TABI.

As the game is right now, still slowly recovering from the damage of the assassin meta, literally all 5 roles are buying Ninja Tabi to counter the toxicity of lethality assassins, which makes it impossible to buy Mercs in the majority of games. Something else that you seem to have conveniently overlooked.

Zephyr was an important item for dive-bruisers and with them on Rito's radar for buffs, this is the most opportune time for Rito to realize their mistake and return the item to League.

First of all, why are you being such an ass. I wasnt an ass in my post, so dont patronize me with shit like "its clear YOU dont know" or "which you conveniently overlooked".

So until you respond respectfully, ill just say one thing - Zephyr wasnt bought on Irelia when it was in the game. You can try to defend it however you want, you can bitch and moan that you want it back, but it wasnt a good item. "Important item"? It was down there with Ohmwreaker in terms of popularity. You have the overbuffed BoTRK or Steraks if you want more damage on Irelia, which both give stats that she can use a lot better than Zephyr. Zephyr was a terrible item that was never bought - deleting it had minuscule effect on the game.

I bought Zephyr almost all the time on Irelia as a 3rd-5th item. Liked it on Trundle and Volibear as well. Basically any AS fighter, really.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

How often did you play Irelia? What rank did you get? Did you play a lot of Irelia to get to that rank? What situations did you buy it in? What situations did you not buy it in?

I can understand that you personally liked and bought the item, but that doesnt change the fact that it was pretty much always suboptimal (unless, of course, as a 7th item after you sold your boots). I never saw Zephyr used in the Professional scene or bought by top tier players on Irelia unless they were snowballing out of control and could have went Zhonyas and still won.

PaladinNO2 votes

While I don't know what rank has to do with anything here, I can reveal that this was in S3/S4; I was Bronze IV in S3, and Gold IV in S4 - and I don't remember if I did buy Zephyr in both Ranked and Normal (I likely did though).

But I do remember the circumstances where I would buy Zephyr: when the opposing team had 2 or more disables/hard CC. But in those scenarios, it was perhaps made 3rd item rather than 5th.

I've never really cared about ranked, nor the pro-scene, and not much cared for SR as a map after its rework. All I ever wanted was to have fun, period.

Marshbouy7 votes

I usually hover over the option to buy it, possibly even buying it, before just undoing the purchase or actually buying the item.

agbudar6 votes

they need to add moonflair spellblade.

SH Azykan3 votes

Diana Fizz are my mains so yes they should, except I know the item is incredibly powerful as are most Twisted treeline items because they have to have stronger 1-2 item spikes on that map

Nanuk Pihoqahiak5 votes

I didn't even realize it was an item until I played some champion where it came up as recommended. lol

Wráthful5 votes

poacher's thingy seems like something rushed up in my humble opinion.

MunchCrunchLunch5 votes

zephyr was removed because Riot likes cookie cutter builds

Tusutaki5 votes

I dont know why they took out Zephyr. I think it's a great time to bring it back now since there's a lot of champs that can utilize it effectively like Kindred and Warwick for example.

Joseraph4 votes

I've bought this item multiple times, and refunded it immediately.

When you buy it your immediate thought process is:

"Will I have Serrated after farming for the 3 minutes this takes to upgrade? Yes"

"Can I afford Serrated straight up? (Probably)Yes"

"Am I better off buying boots/a jungle item component/cloth armor(s) and Control Wards? Yes"

Octobr3 votes

It isn't for junglers. It's for assassin midlaners. First back, buy boots and dirk, push lane, take raptors. I just wish there was a AP option as well.

DeusVult32 votes

ya, but nobody buys it because the item isnt gold efficient, it take three camps to change, and taking a camp sets off a 60 second timer before you can take another. And beyond all that, lethality is a early/mid-game purchase, so slowing your powerspike for 350 bonus gold efficiency is pretty bad.

GayFluffyUnicorn2 votes

And it's not like you can just walk into the enemy jungle and take camps for free. Maybe in master/challenger were your team actually wards and communicates where the jungle is but in my elo i would get gangbanged by three people and die unneccessarily. Not to talk about the fact that assassins in general rarely have pressure in midlane against syndra, ori, ahri.

Actually, even less so in challenger, because the second someone diamond+ sees you buy poacher's dirl they're going to be watching you, waiting for you to leave lane with a high chance you'll try to take their camps, leading to unnecessary death. You have to realize that in challenger, not only is your team challenger, but the enemy team is also challenger.

I loved the mix of stats Zephyr gave. I miss it. :(

I've literally only seen It built once since it's release.

TheEdgeOfDestiny3 votes

What's Poacher Dirk?

To be more serious. I think the reason is - PD is an AD assassin item and there are few AD assassin junglers.

Baron of Bread2 votes

Rengar and Kha'Zix are pretty meta right now (Lee Sin also sometimes buys a lethality item), and they are the types to really benefit from a cheaper Serrated Dirk. The problem for them is that the 300 gold they save when they eventually upgrade it is usually not worth the opportunity cost of not having the full Serrated Dirk to help them snowball the game 3 minutes earlier.

Squidward Dab2 votes

I'm serious when I say ever since that item came out I've only seen one jungler in all my games played ever build it

Supreme Senpai691 votes

Did he win? If so it has a 100% win rate! OP af.

Oakleaf Ranger2 votes

finally someone who made a post about this, I already knew this item was going to be shit when it was revealed with the assassin update. I was like hmm, no one is gonna build this shit.

Sun Wu Ryuumoku1 votes

It wasnt shit. was a great first item rush before all jungle nerf.

Oakleaf Ranger2 votes

It was shit even before the jungler nerfs. Some of the top posts here gave all the reasons why it was shit. The biggest reason I say would have to be the 3 minimum requirement for it to actually transform and thats the best case scenario.

FCJAAAAGOOOO2 votes

Zephyr was such a rad item. Solid dps pick, especially for when you know you're gonna get CC'ed. Also dat mobility and CDR. What a fun item.

TheHappyReaperz2 votes

Pretty sure the item was busted on the champs it was built on. Bonus MS, CDR, and 35% tenacity. ADCs get another damage item, that gives essentially the same MS as boots, bonus AD, as well as more AS than BG. How is that balanced?

NodirjonSattarov2 votes

rylias, morello, (insert any lethality item)

???

TheHappyReaperz2 votes

Rylai's was nerfed to hell, Morello's has been changed quite a bit, and the Ghostblade and Edge of Night were both nerfed pretty heavily.

NodirjonSattarov3 votes

so then why didnt they just change zephyr? do u see where im going with this

ChaoticPinecone2 votes

ADCs didnt get a Zephyr.

In a lategame teamfight, if you get CCed as an ADC youre dead - 35% tenacity doesnt really do much for you. And back then, Phantom Dancer gave the same 50% AS. You got less movespeed from PD over Zephyr (5%) and you didnt get CDR, but the 95% crit with IE + 2x PD was so much more stronger than 25 AD.

Either that or ADCs would keep their boots. Some ADCs liked to keep their tier-3 boot enchants, cause Homeguards and/or Furor were so strong back then.

Melondrama2 votes

i didn't know this was an item

Sckullzz1 votes

Because it was broken.

Troll for Trump4 votes

No....

Sckullzz1 votes

No it was legitly broken... every item had movement speed and it got abused hard by Udyr and other champs that relied on movement speed and attack speed. It became a game of who had the most base movement speed/movement speed buff abilities, then stack more movement speed with Zepher, triforce, and enchantments.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

A Diamond/Challenger level player who is an analyst for CLG smurfs and wreaks with a item because of his superior game knowledge and map rotations. Trick bought Ohmwreaker more than anyone else too.

Doesnt mean that Ohmwreaker is a good item, and if it were removed, doesnt mean that people should want it back.

Lord Galvatron1 votes

Poacher Dirk? Is that a new champion?

just OK jungler1 votes

Poachers dirk cooldown should be shorter(cooldown between taking camps) and it should also be cheaper

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

Pretty sure the zephyr was built more than ohm wrecker & zeke'z herold too. Meanwhile edge of night is built multiple times a game and isn't changed.
