Thoughts on Galio's rework

Malicious Metal··39 votes·5,048 views

Some people might have already noticed how excited I was when Galio's rework was revealed, and as a matter of fact I've been looking forward to his VGU ever since Riot confirmed he was due for a rework. Just like Warwick, and Yorick before him, Galio has always been a champion I was very fond of due to his thematic appeal and him basically being a tanky mage. My track record shows that if a champion's tanky I might have played him, or even mained him. Especially when that durability comes with good damage.

So it's no surprise that I'm absolutely in love with the new Galio, but this isn't just me praising the rework without any concrete arguments, oh no. Just with Warwick's rework a while back I've come to realize that I'm going to make Galio one of my main champions. And I've been spamming him ever since he came out.

But I'm digressing, let me break down his abilities and what I love about them!

First off, Galio is no mere tank, he's the; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Fl7yNIPlGM

He's a watchful guardian, a fierce protector, a Stone knight. He's a hybrid between a Battle mage and a Warden and fulfills this role perfectly in game. I always loved old Galio for being tanky but still bringing good damage and utility to his team, and the new Galio improved on that! He's thoroughly something special, seeing that he's basically a MID LANE TANK That's right! He's got a unique niche to fill to complement your team comp if you have something like Gangplank top (I'm looking at you, Tidal)

He perfectly delivers on this by having one of the most satisfying "mage-y" abilities while also having the cc and peel a tank needs!

http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/c/ce/Colossal_Smash.png/revision/latest?cb=20170317024842 Colossal Smash I love this passive. It's extremely satisfying to use and being able to weave it into your combo separates bad Galios from good ones. Chaining abilities and weaving empowered AA's makes for a very engaging trading pattern

Plus it makes his wave clear even better! Totally more interesting than his old Runic Skin passive, which was pretty toxic to play against anyways!

http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/3/37/Winds_of_War.png/revision/latest?cb=20170317025039 Winds of War I think I'm repeating myself but I can't stress it enough; Galio feels satisfying to play as! Winds of War is by far one of the coolest mage abilities I've ever played with. And I play a ton of Viktor, mind you!

It's very impactful and totally blows minion waves away. It feels great to use and it being pretty unique in its cast paradigm makes it really cool to use!

It's basically old Galio's E->Q combo in one spell and it is his bread and butter ability!

http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/9/9a/Shield_of_Durand.png/revision/latest?cb=20170317025025 Shield of Durand Well, galio's old R is now on his W! xD I love this skill simply for the fact that it makes Galio change into a defensive stance, something I always wanted on a champion. It's passive is great and helps him a lot to actually function as a mid laner. He's able to shrug of poke but also survive a beating due to the damage reduction. Fits perfectly on a kit that's made to duke it out in the frontline.

http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/6/6b/Justice_Punch.png/revision/latest?cb=20170317025009 Justice Punch Silly name aside, this ability is pretty f*cking great. It serves as a great peeling tool but also as your primary way to fling yourself into battle and slam into the enemy. The windup and knockup make it really satisfying to use, even if it can't go through terrain.

it's his best ability to initiate trades. E->Paa->W->aa->Q->Paa It promotes an engaging trading pattern and is pretty telegraphed, offering ample counterplay

http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/a/ac/Hero%27s_Entrance.png/revision/latest?cb=20170317024952 Hero's Entrance! time to make an IMPACT! His R, as it should be, is a very powerful ability and works great with the whole Sentinel theme he has going for him. It helps bait people into collapsing on your team only for you to show up and punish them for their mistakes! It's one hell of an ability to actually witness as it has a lot of theatrical value simply by how cool galio looks using it!

Probably one of my favorite parts of his new kit, definitely something worthy for the Colossus

Verdict: Just like Warwick this rework was a total masterpiece, it managed to preserve a lot of the good things about Galio's kit but most of all it made him a lot more satisfying to play as. You feel there's an actual mastery curve to playing him as well as his spells having synergy and being imapactful on their own!

Truly a champion I can add to my collection!

Some added proof that I me going on and on about him being great isn't unfounded! https://www2.pic-upload.de/img/32905945/galio.jpg

Also, Mid lane Galio is best Galio, fite me! https://www2.pic-upload.de/img/32905948/galiomid.jpg

Honestly, for me Galio just got a spot on the list of failed reworks. Yes, new Galio on his own is a great champ, no doubt. But he isn't Galio in the slightest anymore, His personality completely changed, his Artstyle completely changed, his playstyle changed alot. Befor, he mostly was a battlemage with a bit less dpsand reliabillity on his damage as other battlemage and therfor some more utillity and that bug cc Ult. He had a very unique playstyle, especially because he lacked any hard cc or hard mobillity tools in his base kit and and to use his slow and MS buff to navigate through fights, relying on his W for windowed tankiness, trying to find a sweet spot for the ult. Without flash, it was a hard task, but incredibly rewarding. Now he's prettymuch a pure Tank, he feels very similar to gragas or mao. Some ranged damage skill(s) that can hurt if you built some ap/magic-pen, some decent close-midranged cc that works well for peeling and can be used for enegages if you get a flank.

Totally agree. New Galio is awesome, but the problem is that he isn't Galio at all. With his new kit he is forced into going tank. With the old Galio you could go full ap (a mage) and still do good. The problem is they could have given Galio a miss fortune or gangplank rework style; with some abilities changes but the same playstyle overall, and then release this champion because it is what is, a new champion, he is not Galio at all.

It's like when they forced to Morde to be a botlaner. They completly changed his role and playstyle buy you know, at least his kit was still similar. With Galio is even worse because they changed his playstyle totally. They turned him from a tanky mage into a malphite/shen tank, without preserving his mage identity which was the playstyle the majority of his players used.

This was not a rework, they deleted a champion and then released one new. It's a good champ the new Galio, but is not Galio, and I won't be able to play him never again because RIot decided to delete him from the game because ''muh, Galio mains/players don't exist''.

Not to mention its made all the more ironic when you consider one of the things they wanted to change was his abilities didn't fit his backstory/character motivations, yet if you look at his new backstory it almost fits old Galios abilities better than new Galios abilities.

You were expecting a guy whose entire character, both before AND after, is about defending people to be anything but a tank?

Big Lincoln2 votes

When Riot hypes him up to be an anti-mage on every single mention of him leading up to it, and how a good chunk of lore is about him being made to fight magic and squish mages, yes

When Riot hypes him up to be an anti-mage on every single mention of him leading up to it, and how a good chunk of lore is about him being made to fight magic and squish mages, yes

He has some MR scalings and a fairly large passive magic shield, so I think he's got the anti-mage part covered.

Besides, it's not like he really squashed mages before either. He just sat back and ignored them with Bulwark, while not doing much else because he was a melee poke mage with no good way to actually get into melee range.

Malicious Metal2 votes

He is basically a fighter. Or at least that's how I play/build him.

Big Lincoln1 votes

it's how i built him on PBE too, far more satisfying than shitty tank garbage

but it's not riot-approved so im sure if it ends up better than tank they'll slap it down, so I won't bother

Malicious Metal5 votes

It is Riot approved. They mentioned on numerous occasions that they want him to build AP items and not just tank.

Big Lincoln4 votes

i still don't like him, they handled his antimage aspect terribly. passive Q and E are fine; W and R are deal breakers

you should be rewarded for fighting them directly or fighting around the presence of mages. instead the shield encourages you to do a trade and then avoid them for 12 seconds so you can abuse them some more after with your free magic-health. what happened to him absorbing magic to fuel himself?

% damage reduction on his ult is invisible power, and he can barely capitalize on his own taunt; it's basically just a channel-stopper

Yasuo Gets a shield by running around, and you're pissed about Galio's kit?

yes, because I actually wanted to play Galio

Then get adapted to the new Galio like how the rest & I did with Sion, Yorick & Poppy.

All I want out of the rework is a wrestler skin with a John Cena-esque siren when he slams into the ground from the sky. Overall it's a very fun rework/VU, and while I do understand people hating how Riot made "an entirely new champion and named him Galio", let's not pretend the old one was really much of anything other than a walking R in team fights.

Nice, this has been a good read. I've been looking forward to this rework, and this has me more excited ot get him.

Also, justice punch is pure justice, not silly at all.

Lugg4 votes

I find his W pretty underwhelming. The range, even fully charged, isn't much and it takes FOREVER for it to charge to that point. He feels really strong early, but he seems to drop off pretty bad late game, I'm talking Pantheon like. I would have expected it to be the opposite.

As for Warwick, his rework is broken OP and really feels clunky to play.

Jbels3 votes

Couldn't agree more, Galio is the Demacian equivalent to Sion I've been needing in my life for so long

Borbland3 votes

I personnaly also like the new Galio, even though Im sad to see he old W gone, it was one of the most original abilities in the game.

Other thing that bores me is his E, I personnaly think its just a clunky Vi Q with more CC. Also more mobility when we didnt really needed it.

But else, his kit feels great to play with, and I also like hes playable as both offtank and full tank.

Ralanr2 votes

Is anyone else experiencing his passive canceling some abilities right as you try and cast them? Or is it just me?

KillshotSavage1 votes

it does. Galio is almost impossible to combo with now. His W won't allow his other abilities to trigger, which means the taunt is kinda useless if you don't have others around you, his E takes to long and is SUPER telegraphed...its all in all a fail to me.

Malicious Metal2 votes

Really? I played him a lot and he feels really smooth to me, it might be due to his animations being rather stocky since he's such a colossal champion.

KillshotSavage2 votes

compared to almost every other champion, he is super slow and unable to combo. his passive cancels the ability to do pretty much anything else. Like i can't justice punch, then use his passive...he wants to passive first. basically his animations/abilities don't cancel or chain well....and i'm not digging the ultimate really either...unless you have someone that can root on your team, its meh. his size is another issue. He's smaller then some other champions, so the colossus doesn't work for me if he is normal size....story doesn't work with game size.

For a top, I would much rather take Shen or Illaoi, as both are much more solid choices, both solo and in a team fight.

Ralanr1 votes

Sounds like a bug they can fix then.

KillshotSavage1 votes

sounds like something they should have had in the PBE at least.

The Lost Marbles2 votes

Okay, fine, you win.

Revert him, scrap this garbage piece of trash rework, and fire everyone on the update team.

Revert everything else while we're at it, every single garbage rework.

well at least he appeals to some more people now i guess

for me he is still boring af to play maybe when i feel like inting i will pick him up xd

jokes aside i think this champ has more potential now kek

ScarletSurgeon2 votes

He definetly does not feel like an Anti-Magic Champ.v

He scales a bit of MR on his Passive and W but it's rather minor and feels rather unsatisfying to build it.

Metal, I find myself agreeing with you a lot dude. I'm glad that you think the Galio rework is as great as I do. I'd love your posts way more..... If you weren't a filthy mordekaiser player :^) kappa. But honestly, i thought the E was a fucking hype name. Justice punch is over the top goofy enough to be hype in my opinion. Tho I did grow up watching power rangers and Yu-Gi-Oh so maybe I'm just fucking crazy and can withstand a lot of camp.

I like the rework in terms of graphical looks, skills, and helpfulness to the team fights beyond his old R. I do however think they need to tone down his AP ratios a bit. Getting MR gear with AP on it isn't hard to do. Since most of his itemization is centered around getting MR items, with possible Armor/HP item thrown in there, they need to look at how easily he'll get AP equal to many mages. His base damage on his Q is high, as well as how much CC he has in the form of Knockups, this makes him able to trade and not even get hit quite often if he pulls the skills off right. E in, Q, move back and let the guy try and not get hit by full term of Q dmg. This dot hits FAST too. This is another issue that is also hitting with AOE skills similar to it, for example Nasus's AOE. You drop it on someone in center you are 100% guaranteed to proc a Thunderlords each and every time it's up. Not to mention that Nasus's CD on it is low and it gives him free farming for his Q. Nasus's skill takes up the whole width of the lane in many spots, meaning you have to run through it to get out of it.

Now to Galio's Q, it's got a double arc so no matter how you dodge you'll get clipped. Your main hope is moving back or forward and hoping he guessed where you'll be going wrong. Either way you'll take the full initial hit and some of the dot. If he got Thunderlords then it's likely that you'll be hit by it too. Adding in how his passive is Jax's Ult on crack as it's functioning is the same as how Ziggs's passive is lowered. However Ziggs has some good CDs on his W, E, and R, but the main point for Ziggs is that his passive is single hit. I don't have Galio so I can't launch a game and try to see what the AP ratio is on his Passive but looking at how much dmg I have seen myself take from it, it's a good bit of dmg. Riot is pushing a lot of changes out with new champs and reworks that is making it a massive OP AOE frenzy on just a guess of who can spam their skills faster in a fight, as opposed to timing skills and knowing how long the CD is on them.

If they lowered his AP ratios, and maybe looked at lining up some of the channel times, ranges, and CDs of his skills a bit, then he'd feel like a less OP champ and fall in with all the others as making the choice of going Tank or going AP Fighter, instead of where he can basically go both. This is also something that many of the current tanks need to be looked at as well. Seeing a champ hitting 600+ with a single Auto Attack without any items other than Armor/MR/HP on them makes it feel like the meta will just be Tank top, Tank mid, Tank JG, Tank sup, and Tank ADC cause everything needs to be able to take hits and LS just won't cut it when the tank can take over half your HP in 1 hit and you do maybe a 1/5th of his cause he's got a shitload of armor and HP.

Njallum1 votes

I think Galio is supposed to deal more damage than most tanks, given how he's a Warden/Battle Mage hybrid. It seems likely that he'll be nerfed since the Q can be quite oppressive in lane, and is indeed difficult to avoid. I say this objectively, for I have already managed to reach mastery level 4 with him.

DemoGuide1 votes

I really like gameplay part of the rework. But. for the love of god, these voice lines... They are totally off from what Galio used to be. And i love champions the most because of their voices/art. So, I enjoy playing him, because i like tanky dudes. But he is no longer the Galio i had a connection with deep inside my heart.
