In-game moderators for League of Legends

Hey, guys!

I watched Huzzy's video (which I also linked for those of you who want to hear his opinion on the subject) and I wanted to ask all of you if you would like to have such a system in LoL. In short, specific players on each server would be given the moderator role, which would allow them to punish players in real time, as well as review reports post-game. Kinda like the Tribunal, but better.

Should such system be implemented? Definitely yes. Granted, it can be abused, but the human factor will always be there as long as AI can't be as good in judging cases as we are. It will benefit the community a lot and I'm positive it can be a huge leap towards toning down toxicity and trolling in it. On the one hand, knowing any of the players on your or the enemy team could be a moderator would deter at least some people from breaking the rules, while on the other hand some people will be given the power to act against offenders immediately themselves and doing so would generate a sense of satisfaction, while speeding up the punishment process immensely, making sure those who evade justice now could no longer do it.

How I think the system should work: A relatively small number of people out of all applicants would be selected and interviewed from a Riot employee in real time (via a Skype call for instance, no anonymity allowed) and asked different questions, put into certain situations to see how they respond, etc., basically like a job interview.

Those, who are selected, would be given the power to forcefully mute toxic players in-game and review reports and player chat-logs post-game (not necessarily from the same match) and chat restrict players with toxic behavior or send reports of severe offenses to higher-ups, which would have much higher priority over normal reports. Once a while passes and the newly appointed moderator proves themselves they'll be given higher authority, which would allow them to apply stronger punishments without sending high-priority reports to higher-ups, but they still can if aren't sure about what to do.

At the highest authority moderators should be able to apply the same punishments as official Riot employees. Those would also be the only ones to be allowed to review reports against their premades and be able to punish them. They'll also be able to punish lower ranked moderators. All moderators, however, would be held to a much higher standard than regular players and punishments against them would be much more severe.

What many people may disagree with is that I think they shouldn't be given in-game recognition. This is to prevent people from acting in certain ways to avoid punishment just because they know there's a moderator in the game. Whether or not you disagree, remember that there are many other ways a moderator can be recognized and rewarded for their good work without blowing their cover.

Who should be allowed to be a moderator?

  1. Strictly 20+ years old - I, personally, wouldn't trust anyone younger than that with such an important role
  2. A very objective person
  3. Doesn't let their emotions cloud their judgement
  4. Has good problem solving
  5. Can act professionally and be polite even when the other person isn't
  6. Wouldn't turn a blind eye to an offender for any reason (granted, there are rare exceptions to that rule)
  7. Has at least average (more or less my) level of English speaking skills
  8. Plays regularly
  9. Has a clean punishment history
  10. Can speak at least one language that isn't English (optional, for multilingual servers where not every player uses English to communicate)

I could probably think of more, but I'm not gonna stare at the ceiling for the next 2 hours to make a complete list :D

So there, I've thrown my two cents in there. TL;DR - I approve of such a system and I think only mature players should be allowed anywhere near it. What do YOU guys think?

While something like this would be nice in theory, it is simply physically impossible to enact. There are just too many games played throughout the day

It wouldn't be putting a mod in every single game, but it's still going to speed up the punishment process. Right now it could take weeks and that can be lowered to, say, one week at worst.

It would definitely be more of a deterrent, especially if the team grows in size.

If a mod, player behaviour rep or w/e other title there is happens to be present in a game, in which a player trolls (something riot struggles to detect compared to chat/feeding) that player can recieve punishment as per the mod under one condition, they're reported by another team mate, not in a party, for the same/similar reason (eg trolling=feeding when they run it down mid). This would prevent abuse of power to a degree

Considering how much racist sludge was thrown at me during the last "fun mode" and 0 popups about punishment, I'd say Riot doesn't care to put time into handling moderation at all. That costs money.
