While Urgot's new ult looks interesting

I can't help but think the old ult would have worked so much better with urgot's knee guns and his new W. It feels like those two mechanics would have worked so well with his old ult. Mechanically it feels like his new ult was tacked on at the very last minute. It just doesn't have the synergy with the rest of his kit like the old one.

I dunno. I almost want to say the new ult was something done because of theme instead of done because it was the right gameplay choice. I think his new kit fits better with a pick and disrupt playstyle that his old ult offered but someone had a thematic idea for an execute ult he fell in love with and couldn't bring himself to get rid of. I feel like urgot's new kit wants to disrupt and cause havoc while in the middle of the enemy team while his new ult is there only to KS.

This isn't to say in a vacuum the new ult is bad, but holistically I think it was the wrong choice. It's like the rioter in charge didn't really have a feel for what he was working on. While I would like to give that rioter some credit, I don't see how you give urgot those passive and W changes knowing his ult was getting replaced. It just doesn't make any sense.

I mean how could anyone give a champ 2 different disruption tools with prior knowledge that the main tool to enable disruption would be going away? The only other thing I can think of is that there was some drama going on behind the scenes, that someone not related to gameplay wanted the new ult for the coolness factor and didn't realize it would create an obvious discord in the reworked kit.

His new kit really seems like it was built with the old ult in mind.

His new ult will have to major uses. One, nabbing an adc, or assassin in a team fight and potentially taking them out of the fight with the beacon, followed by an unstoppable execute. Two, stopping someone from escaping after a trade, like the garen who's trying to haul ass because he wants his passive to heal him up. Hit him with it, and hopefully get the execute off. Also, it'll cause mass panic. As soon as the enemy team knows the second stage of the ult is going, you know they are going to throw everything at Urgot. A good team will use this and potentially get several kills out of a team trying to stop the death of the poor unfortunate soul who got hit by the ult.

I agree that the new ult will have its usefulness and will probably be a big moment when properly used. However when I look at the rest of his kit, I start asking if he was really supposed to have it.

I think it's just the Jugg style. Look at most Juggs and you'll see they favor pick/execution ults. Although yes it would make sense to have his old ult, this one is meant to bring them back to him. He runs you down and when you are about to get away, pulls you right back in.

I mean his E is literally just a weaker version of his ult. Having both would be redundant.

Yes, this is a good argument for enabling the new ult. With the new E, he's got open room for an execution effect. His E is a skill shot now and it doesn't give him any sort of shields, so as you said it is worse than the old version.

I think two things could have happened. First is riot decided to change the E first which freed up his ult for the new mechanic. The second thing that could have happened is that the ult was changed at some point during the rework and urgot had to have his E replaced because the designer knew he needed some form of engage for the new kit to work and this was the only way he could jerry-rig the kit to keep its intended play style. Thus that rioter added both the E and the conditional fear aspect to the ult.

So I guess the important question is was the E changed first or was the Ult changed first?

I think that he has always had the new R. Remember that the leaks a long while ago talked about this very same mechanic, where he'd pull you in and execute you. Besides, Riot probably wants to save the ability for a champion who can make better use of the mechanic, like a Tank.

seems fitting to me

Ult at the beginning or middle of your combo for the heavy long duration slow, do enough damage to them solo or with team, then execute

I'm pretty eager to see creative uses of it, too, like flashing into the enemy team to reactivate ult and max the use of your fear
