Can Divers be Healthy?

It's really somewhat of a simple question. Riot's categorization includes "Divers", champions who throw themselves in the middle of the enemy team with the intent to kill and being a legitimate damage threat. This is different from Vanguards, offensive tanks who specialize in initiation and unloading CC while absorbing the damage brought down on them in response.

My concern however is whether or not the role of Divers is healthy on a conceptual level. Divers include Xin Zhao, Vi, Diana, Aatrox, and Rengar; all of these champions share a common problem, and expose a problem with the Diver class as a whole. And that problem is that many Divers are feast or famine: They either get fed and make themselves an absolute terror with sure-fire ways to get in and the damage and durability to almost assuredly get a kill, or they fall behind and their only means of contribution is still launching themselves at the enemy team and likely dying. That's doesn't come across as good gameplay health, in my opinion.

The problem arises in that Divers aren't Vanguards or Assassins; they aren't meant to be a damage-soaking CC threat, and they don't have means of quickly getting out if things go south. So that's what brings my question to front and center: is it possible for the Diver sub-class to be healthy period?

Divers will be picks that will only be picked in situational events like when the enemy team has a limited amount of cc. I don't think they will become as squishy as assasins. They will still be somewhat tanky despite their mobility. Assasins also have a term of mobility in their kit so diver will be designed arround they would still be able to survive until they brought add least one into the grave.

See, that's the problem. Divers can't be balanced around making sure they can take at least one person down before dying, because that means a fed diver will be oppressive. Look at Akali- who, while not a Diver, currently embodies its overall thematic with her kit- tell me, does a fed Akali feel fair to fight against when she has a surefire way to get in, the damage to burst someone down, and the means to keep kicking despite trying to focus her?

It's the same with the likes of Xin Zhao and Diana, who dive in and eliminate a target as quickly as possible. They either win or they don't. All-in champions like them have historically been difficult to balance for this very reason, and that's why I'm concerned about Divers as a whole.

Diana isn't just about eliminating a target though. She's engage. Q - Flash - R - W - E - Zhonyas. Group 4 people up, do some damage, and wait for your team to followup.

She really isn't that feast or famine either because she will always have engage to fall back on if she builds Zhonyas.

True, I think that CC will be crucial in dealing with them, unless it's Irelia of course.

Well, Drivers have to time their dive right, or else they are just the best feeders in the game, literally. They are not juggernaut as they are too slow but tough to get into unless they have flash, and assassins are too squishy to get the job done. So while the concept is sound it's that divers should be able to 1v5 anyone but be the ones that jump a lone player while jumping an entire team is to initiate in place of tanks.
