Lethality scales with your own level.
This is going to be a math class to help you understand how lethality works.
If you have 40 Lethality (which are 2 completed
items -> 2 of
), then you reduce target's armor by:
Flat Armor Penetration = LETHALITY × (0.6 + 0.4 × level ÷ 18) -> Your armor penetration is always at least 60% lethality, the remaining 40% scale with your own level (which is y2,2%, where y = your level)
Example: If you are level 9 and have 40 lethality:
Flat Armor Penetration at level 9 = 0,640 (you always have 60% lethality effective at least) + 0,240 -> 0,840 = 32
-> At level 9 you have 30 effective lethality.
Now into the in-game example.
If you are level 9 and have 40 lethality and there are 2 champions, one of them is a
(who built
,
and has a
), the other is a
(who has no armor item).
at level 9 has 66 base armor. His Sunfire Cape, Ninja Tabi and Frozen Heart give him 190 armor, so he has 256 armor. To keep it simple, I am going to assume Maokai doesn't have Iron Skin (+ 5 armor rune) or Conditioning (+8 armor after 10 minutes)
If you (level 9
) attack a level 9 Maokai with 256 armor, your 30 flat armor penetration (from the math above) reduces Maokai's armor by 30 -> Maokai has 226 effective armor against your physical damage dealing attacks (Jhin's autoattacks, Q, W and R), which is a 69% damage reduction against your physical damage (as opposed to 72% if you had 0 lethality).
(sidenote: damage reduction = armor / (armor + 100))
at level 9 has 55 base armor.
If you (level 9
) attack a level 9 Varus with 55 armor, your 30 flat armor penetration reduces Varus's armor by 30 -> Varus has 25 effective armor against your physical damage, which is a 20% damage reduction against your physical damage (as opposed to 35% if you had 0 lethality).
I think you now see that Lethality is way more powerful against champions that don't build armor items (
), as opposed to armor-stacking tanks (
)
