Do off meta players get labeled as trolls or was it just my pick?

I decided I would try out aatrox because a friend of mine bought me a skin for him. Decided to go mid with him. I thought sure why not I will probably get bodied top lane but most mages won't be able to out harass the sustain if I just dodge skillshots. Then boom I get hit with waves of dodges and people basically hating my pick even though they probably have never seen it. I've even had people go as far as to ban him due to my pick intent. I thought wow this sucks but then it just hit me after I got my second S- on him that I got such negative responses in champ select with him.

I'm wasn't trolling I was legitimately trying to win so do off meta players have to deal with this every day because if so then I don't understand how you guys do it.

Alot of players (myself included) wince a little when we see a super non meta pick locked in or at pick intent

some people go as far as to ban the champ

I mean, i really wouldn't wanna play with a mid aatrox, and would love if someone dodged. Doesn't mean ill dodge myself or ban said champ, just i don't wanna play with it if it can be avoided.

especially if the rest is meta, people don't want to play with no mid i.e. with no either a strong aoe damage/cc or an assassin to kill their carries

it doesn't matter if you are doing good or not, it will make the game harder

also you could jungle with him

p.s. his laning is strong at top

It doesn't necessarily mean you're trolling (and you're not from the sounds of things), but people tend to shy away from off-meta stuff. Life can be pretty hard as off-meta, but once things get in game it's not so bad, provided you actually do well. People bite a lot if you're off meta and thing go poorly though.

Also aatrox in particular is/was in a pretty rough spot for awhile. I think the recent bork buffs probably helped him out somewhat so he's probably fine now, but I know a few patches back people might have winced if you even picked aatrox top.
