The secret reason damage is so high:

Every champion focuses on doing damage because they play heavily around their (and their opponents') damage-based keystones.

There, you didn't even need to click on this thread; now you know.

Gameplay can shut down - we can all leave now. There's no use for it.

It’s not even just the keystones. They made armor and mr worthless so all this damage flying around is being turned into near constant true damage.

Agreed. 9 Armor and 12.34 Magic Resist (particularly the Magic Resist) make quite a difference. It seems like a small amount but it really does make a difference.

I wish Riot would give us some actual options as far as defensive runes.

Well I mean because of the mass amounts of %pen in the game.

It's a combination of a lot of things, really.

  • More penetration in items (moreso AD items)
  • Less armor/MR/HP on items
  • Higher damage output runes/masteries (fuck keystones for real)
  • Lower (in S8 completely removed) armor/MR runes
  • The penetration formula was changed (used to be flat first, then %; now it's the other way around...though I think they did this a long time ago, don't remember for sure.)
  • The vast majority of champion buffs are to damage, and nerfs are to defensive stats/abilities
