Yasuo counters

SlaktarTasken··6 votes·5,515 views

As there apparently is 0 counterplay to this champion I thought we could make a thread on which champions to counterpick him with.

My proposed counter to Yasuo is Tryndamere, for perhaps obvious reasons, I've had alot of success laning this champ against Yasuo, but I've also had the enemy team deliberaly pick him to remove one of his counters, so I'd like to know what other champs will straight up beat the shit out of him making him bad before he reaches his godlike teamfighter status.

I've heard Jax listed, but honestly, my opinion is that any good Yasuo will just juke your abilities with ease and Jax is also really straight forward and easy to predict, so for me he's not really as much of a straight up counterpick as by the times you do have enough items to straight up beat him you will be in teamfighting fase where he simply outperforms you with gusto.

And so on...

Propositions?

Lissandra Yasuos worst nightmare holy shit She has a root, poke, some what sustain, an ability that makes her get out of any situation and is a low cool down, an ultimate that makes her go in stasis or stuns some one for 1.5 seconds and is aoe which rekts people in team fights. This is yasuo worst nightmare. Actually almost all ad assassins worst nightmare.

SlaktarTasken2 votes

But can't he block like half her kit? Wouldn't that make it more of a skill matchup?

Smefanye1 votes

The only two things he can block are her Q and E. Her Q is on like a 3 second cd with almost no cdr and her E isn't used for damage for the most part, plus she can just activate it again before it hits the wall. If Yasuo tries to E near a Lissandra, she W's to keep him in place and Q's him; if he forces an all in or ults her she can self ult to heal and kite him out, or stun him, root him, then try to burst him or disengage. Again, the key to fighting Yasuo is to not play his game and to gauge him; watch where you are in relation to your minions, punish him quickly for going in and move away, and move side to side when he's near instead of straight back.

Stars Shaper1 votes

The ones who get lots of things blocked are the ones that can lure his wall better and then kill him.

SlaktarTasken1 votes

But I don't agree, that's saying Yasuo has to mess up for you to win, I've found that if Yasuo is good, he won't be spending any windwalls on baits, that's what he has his passive for.

Stars Shaper1 votes

His passive won't even defend him from a poke skill past level 5. I've not met many Yasuo pros, just some good ones and I found out that one of the easiest time I had against them was with Varus mid.

Crazy right? Well, since Wall has tons of CD even at max rank is not that hard to poke down Yasuo and force him to play defensive, ofc you need guud lures and not just shooting things hoping that he messes up. That's part of the skill involved if you want or your team needs a long range guy who happens to have projectiles.

Also Varus is the only1 who has all of his kit countered by Wind Wall, Lux and Vel'koz ultimates pass through.

Rico Nasty3 votes

Kayle is fucking hilarious against Yasuo because his windwall doesn't block her e and it's so easy for her to proc his passive. Plus, her crazy lane sustain and dueling abilities. She just destroys Yasuo.

Adding:

Akali Azir Chogath Darius JarvanIV Gnar Jax Malzahar Pantheon Viktor Riven

And these are just the hard stompers.

SlaktarTasken1 votes

With most of these, I don't know about Gnar or Jax though. Jax can be kited by Yasuo so as long as he doesn't extend his trades he can easly come out on top, Jax also isn't half the teamfighter Yasuo is. I also don't know about Victor, I find it hard to believe a skilled Yasuo would fall to his gimmicks or his laserbeam (which is loaded with like half of his damage). Otherwise I can see the others working.

Stars Shaper1 votes

Jax is probably situational but his free mobility puts yasuo at peril and he outrades him easily.

Gnar can also take his ultimate if he is about to transofrm and then shamsh him to a wall/turret. Trust me it's priceless xD

Edit: Cho'gath eats him alive.. litteraly, Yasuo can't defend against him.

Ziovi1 votes

why ahri? i mean, she can play against him, but would you say she is a counter? his wall block all of her skills, too...

Dash in, get all combo, dash out.

Risky but rewarding

Anyone with point and click gap closer and high burst is good. Bonus points if you have hard CC. AkaliDiana Fizz Irelia Jax MasterYi Pantheon Talon Poppy Vi MonkeyKing XinZhao. Champions that have high kill pressure if you enter their zone of control are also good choices. Darius FioraChogath Garen Hecarim Jayce Olaf Renekton Rengar Riven Rumble Tryndamere Udyr Viktor Zed. If you have to play a ranged champion, someone with damage mitigation or sustain is good, especially if their harass is also strong.Karma Kayle Lulu Orianna Ryze Swain Vladimir.

Yasuo's matchups generally aren't that favorable and there are very few matchups where he doesn't have to outplay significantly to win. Granted, Yasuo is given a ton of tools and opportunities to outplay you, but all you really need to do beat Yasuo is be aggressive and don't get horrifically outplayed. On most of these champions listed, simply not getting manhandled by his strong lvls 1 and 2 is enough to win the lane and if Yasuo ever gets behind to any of these champions, he no longer gets to farm. Period. Yasuo's only way to trade is be being next to you which is extremely dangerous if he is behind since he is squishy and has no escape. The moment you start outtrading Yasuo, he doesn't get to farm anymore.

some off those are rather close and can easily snowball in both directions though, and some others are generall lanebulys that get heavily outscaled by him if they can't push their advantage, but all off thos doe pretty well in lane vs him.

Caytheles1 votes

Also Lucian, believe it or not but if you play lucian very well you can use his whole kit to Demolish yasuo.

Flow shield? auto attack it or throw a W.

Windwall before Flowshield? Wait it out... what is he gonna do? go infront of it? then use W or an AA when it expires.

Flowshield Then windwall? If you take off his Flowshield before he puts windwall you can still harass with Q (Piercing Light)

He dashing towards you? you will probably have your W mark on him so just AA once and your dash plus the movement speed can match his mobility.

Only problem is if you are ulted then you might die. because yknow..... 50% armor reduction and 100% extra crit. but yeah, Lucian seems to work really well when i use him vs top lane yasuo.

SlaktarTasken1 votes

Yasuo counters adc's hard and I mean all adc's, some that are more mobile can maybe give him a little trouble, but truth be told, while mobile to an extent, lucian is no Vayne or Tristana. Also needing to bait out certain skills = needing for Yasuo to screw up, so I wouldn't agree on this one.

Smefanye1 votes

To be fair any assassin could be on top of an adc and they'd probably be equally screwed. Again, the key is your minions; if Yasuo dashes onto you and you can get away somehow, rocket jump, caitlyn net, etc. unless you're near minions he has to just walk up to you. And unless he windwalls right in your face he's gonna have to move in front of it to get to you. Yasuo sucks to face, believe me I know, but it's a matter of facing him enough times and knowing how much you can get away with vs how much he can get away with.

Caytheles1 votes

Hey, i respect your comment. True that Yasuo as a champion can beat most adc, however i take very cautious measures. I enjpy lucian top especially with a yasuo. Lets me play the Dangerous game and if i lose? Well..... fuck me right? however through personal experience i have beaten yasuo many times with lucian top.

SlaktarTasken1 votes

Good man, whatever works for you. You are right that Lucians E probably comes in handy when needing to position quickly around windwall.

Everything that can stick to him and has no skillshots. Udyr, Riven , Garen, Darius. Stuff like that.

SlaktarTasken1 votes

These makes sense. :> Those also have som innate tankyness

ImSoFull1 votes

Kayle Garen Darius Yi Zed Fiora Riven I can beat him with leblanc.

Smefanye1 votes

In mid, since squishy mid laners tend to have the most issues with him, I tend to crap on most Yasuo's as LeBlanc Leblanc , you just have to gauge what the Yasuo is going for in early levels. If he starts e and tries to cheese you at 1, start W and jump away, but let him hit you once maybe to draw minion aggro and auto him on his way back. In later levels use Q and see if he windwalls, don't Q-R-E straight away as windwall blocks it, most Yasuo's seeing the Q think you're about to combo them and will put up the wall. Or even just W right up near him then immediately go back; again a lot of them think you're about to unload on them. When the wall wears off go on him, but also respect his powerspikes, never stay near him too long even if you went even with him, he WILL win a sustained fight against most people early on. Honestly, to beat Yasuo you have to not play his game and for all that's holy don't pick an immobile laner unless it's maybe Lissandra or Lux, because unless you're really good at that champ he can dictate the lane.

Stars Shaper1 votes

I don't know if "there is 0 counterplay" is your opinion too but really each time a Yasuo thread comes up there are ppl (like me) who always put down several walls of feedback on how to deal with him that get either:

  • Downvoted and/or ignored without any single answer.

  • Replied with "but dodoging things, zone him and luring is not counterplay", "Oh yeah now I must counterpick him? That's no counterplay", "But I can't sit and win! So this means no counterplay".

SlaktarTasken1 votes

I can beat Yasuo, but it doesn't change the fact that their is very little counterplay to his kit, as others have said, he suffers against bruisers and fighters who don't have any ranged skills he can cheese with his WW. But that's still counterpicking, not counterplaying.

Stars Shaper1 votes

Then define counterplay because the matter is probably there. There is lots of things you can do to counter his kit but that depends on the char you are playing and his strenghts. I can't tell you to jump in and trade with him if you are a squishy mage, but if you are playing a bruiser/juggernaut you should really do it.

SlaktarTasken1 votes

That's still counterpicking and playing the champ as they ordinarily would be played. Those matches are more or less decided by what champs you chose in champion select not what you build or any adjustments you make to your play once the match has started.

There is little a squishy mage or immobile adc can do, gameplaywise to stop a Yasuo from going rampant thanks to the combination of his passive and windwall, given Yasuo plays as he should be played, hence the lack of counterplay.

Sure, they can stack armor to mitigate some of his damage, but that's just detrimental so rather than calling it counterplay I'd call it idiocy.

Let's say I'm playing a mage vs mage setup, I can go for more damage(AP), CDR(to spamm my spells more often), Manaregen (for greater casting pool) or I can go for MR to mitigate the opponsing mages damage on me, this is counterbuilding, a part of counterplay.

Perhaps I'm wrong and perhaps counterpicking is a part of counterplay, but then it all comes down to making sure you make your pick AFTER your lane opponent has made his. Which doesn't rhyme correctly in my ears.

Stars Shaper1 votes

Yasuo hasn't a defined weakness poutside of not being fully immune even when all his defenses are up so good timing and good targeting are it's counterplay. How you achieve that is determined by the champion you use and this doesn't mean counterpick it means that every char must exploit his own strenghts.

Wînter Fox1 votes

There's really only two counters -

  1. Tanky mages (Malzahar Swain Lissandra) Ranged AAs to bring down his shield and consistent poke. They can also withstand a Yasuo ult without being completely deleted.

  2. Rush armor/health Since Yasuos always go for item 3087 he'll have low overall AD- perfect for a straight up armor rush into: item 3742 item 3157 item 3143item 3068

SlaktarTasken1 votes

You do know magic damage on shiv can crit right? That's what makes it so great on Yasuo as he no longer even has to get close to mages to do substantial ammounts of damage, that's why I consider mages (who pretty much always lack any reliable sustain) to be a bad choice since unless you are simply that much better a player, he will just push you out of lane given he doesn't outright kill you). I didn't downvote this post btw, just sharing my opinion.

Wînter Fox1 votes

By the time he gets Shiv the Mages should already be way ahead of him

Diana gets past his wall well enough. Maybe Riven too but I always get dodged when I try to take her mid.

That sucks, Riven is great mid, heck, I even have memories of season3 or 4 when it was kind of a thing.

Annie. To counter one braindead champ that pretends to take skill you use the most braindead champ that actually takes no skill and make these hisagi gay bois cry.

Dunkrius2g1 votes

Viktor and Aatrox can do very well against him.

hgjkdlsaf jeldvb1 votes

Karthus Malzahar Kayle do decently

Minuano1 votes

As an experienced Yasuo player, I have to say that Annie is the most difficult for him to deal with. It's impossible to outplay the stun since she doesn't lose her stun if her ability gets blocked by wind wall. Post 6 you have to play extremely passively or else you will get instabursted just trying to farm. A good Yasuo can win any lane, even against bruisers/fighters like Garen, Trynd, and Jax, but Annie is just a brutal matchup.

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

Tryndamere actually can get kited easily if the Yasuo is good. Of course he wins every straight 1v1 but Yasuo can outplay him easily. Riven, Renekton, Darius. Garen, Fiora, Trundle, Pantheon beat him toplane Malzahar, Swain, Zed (and Talon) beat him midlane.

SlaktarTasken1 votes

But that requires misplay on Tryndameres part, Yes, Yasuo can kite with his Q, but given good placement you can always force an engage or retreat, simply zone him away from minions since Tryndamere gets his crits for free and has higher base stats while Yasuo has spend runes on or get items to effectively gain any crit chance at all. Whenever I play Vs Yasuo, I just farm up until I have 100% rage becuase he will never be able to outtrade me in the early game, unless I misplay and post that, if he comes for a minion I'll engage, if he runs away he'll get chickenshitted and take a crit to the back. His windwall is basicly useless in this matchup and his mobility is more circumstantial than Trynds which gives Trynd all the tools he needs to destroy Yasuo, post 6 Undying Rage is simply God against Yasuos ult (Given he even hits it, whirlwind slash is GOD).

As Tryndamere is a shit teamfigher though, it all comes down to keeping Yasuo down before he can reach that teamfighting God status and make sure you get your team ahead before Yasuo reaches Godmode, fail to do that and you will lose.

Yasuo can win in the early game given very good outplay, but my experience is that Ghost/Ignite will and decent play will just wreck him, even if he plays well as he doesn't have the proper tools to win the matchup.

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

Hmm yeah if you run ghost ignite you will prolly stomp him. I don't even know what the standard summoner spell choice for Tryndamere players is these days. I see alot running flash ignite, some run flash tp, some ghost ignite, some ghost tp.

SlaktarTasken1 votes

I take spells depending on matchup, if I'm going Trynd against Yasuo I'll always take ignite/ghost or ignite/flash as keeping Yasuo down simply takes higher priority than anything else in the game. It has worked very well for me so far.

Zilean is a solid pick against stabby mc stab stab. He has a really long range aa to get rid of the shield and stabby might dash into bombs by accident. Also zils ult is great because stabby has a hard time not killing people. 80 % of the time when he catches someone out nothing is going to save them except a revive.

SlaktarTasken1 votes

Perhaps, but as I find Zilan to be like.. the hardest champ to play in the game, I wouldn't risk it. ^^

He definitely has a high skill cap and it's hard to get the stun off by yourself. I am in no way good with him. All you gotta do in lane is wave clear though; he's really safe =P

Rabid Husky1 votes

Zed unless yasuo has crit runes he wont out damage a good zed with positioning, even then after 6 zed has a ult yasuo kinda doesn't. not to mention q to proct his shield, shadow for better positioning and poke it even goes through windwall and his shadows e slows reducing that shield for a second longer

Lulu hear me out i know this is a troll pick but it fucking works against yasuo she can place pix around windwall and q him from behind not to mention pix still autos him plus polymorph just go full ap in lane could be luck but i outplayed a yasuo so hard since he had no idea what to do :3

SlaktarTasken1 votes

Actually, I've witnessed well played Zed take out well played Yasuo's so I kind of believe u.

As for Lulu, I fully agree, he might be able to windwall alot of pix damage but her Ult and sheeple thing works great for denying his all-in. Not saying she's the best laner against Yasuo, but I always applaud my sup for picking Lulu when we are doing against Yasuo since she has alot of tools to deny him with.

Malzahar

God this lane is horrible for me when I play Yasuo.

Also got fucked up recently by Riven mid.

TheI3igDaddy1 votes

If nobody else has gone into detail about Chogath , I will. He shits on Yasuo if you play him correctly.

TL;DR, Cho can sustain through laning phase against a Yasuo, while harassing the hell out of him whenever he tries to trade.

Yasuo has no innate sustain aside from his Flow Shield and a Doran's Blade that he probably will start out with. Cho can easily pop the shield once it's full by throwing Vorpal Spikes at Yasuo, and once the shield evaporates, he can go on the offensive.

Maxing Feral Scream first, he can shut Yasuo up and land a Rupture on him, wailing on him with Vorpal Spikes. You can then zone Yasuo from farming if he's too low to get near you, due to the threat of being eaten.

Pay attention to your own creeps, because Yasuo can only dash through them. You can sometimes catch Yasuo off-guard by Rupturing him at just the right moment to where he thinks he can dash out of it, but there's nothing to dash to.

Build-wise, you're going to be stacking health once you hit 6, and Yasuo always wants to rush Shiv. If he decides to go for BorK or something instead, he has no crit and can't really utilize his passive early on. If you rush Frozen Heart, the only way that Yasuo can hurt you is if you get hit by his ult, which is the only bad part of this matchup; Cho has no mobility to really evade it, unless it's shot from max range. I tend to rush Rod of Ages; the extra health, along with the sustain on level-up, always keeps you healthy.
