building a champ pool

Glîtchy··2 votes·1,543 views

So I watched phylol for climbing tips and he said "put together a champ pool" for 2 positions, I wanted to primarily go top and mid, here's what I've got for those positions:

Mid: Ahri Veigar Diana Katarina Talon Morgana

Top: Aatrox Nasus Renekton DrMundo Fiora Hecarim Mordekaiser Garen Gnar Singed Nautilus Jax Maokai

Either: Akali Fizz Heimerdinger Malphite

Ik I have quite a few here, but I'd like to whittle it down to about 3 per positions.

You also need to have support champs because getting autofilled to support is inevitable

I have Nautilus and Sona

When your at 70+ Lp, I recommend intentionally playing a game of support to get Role protection enabled, You get the advantage of being mentally prepared for the role, and don't get randomly dicked into a random off role. Also I would say Sona is in a bad spot, if your willing to invest some time I would go Nami or Braum as both have impact in lane and teamfights.

Just pick 2 of those,and 1 supp.

Learn those champs in and out and you are good to go.

The problem is, I won't have anything if my pick gets banned then.

Most of these are never banned, pick 2 from the same lane and it's fine.

Have you seen bronze?

Try this : pick Renekton and Garen for top. They are not hard but still have some kind of animation canceling and combos I guess.

Make sure your runes and masteries are properly set up.

Look up guides for them and learn how to trade in lane.

Flash/TP in harder lanes and ignite if you think that you can kill them.

Never build full damage.

Focus on farming rather than attacking your opponent.

Don't attack in enemy minion waves unless it's a certain kill.

Don't know about you but this used to happen to me :I would farm well for the first few minutes and then I would just lose focus and miss out so much xp and gold.

Always focus on getting experience and gold as a top laner.

Ward deep in the river or enemy jungle so you can see them earlier.

When you pick your favourite champ play him a lot and get comfortable with him.

And again:Focus on farming and last hitting.

Ahri and Talon are doing well in mid right now.

Renekton and Fiora are rocking top pretty hard from what I've seen.

Fizz kind of dominates mid and Malph is really good for a team comp overall.

Those are who I'd suggest getting down.

I've got trouble knowing how to build Fiora, plus Maokai and Mundo are pretty common top and are PRACTICALLY unkillable.

RenownedWheat421 votes

Mundo is alright but brings nothing to an actual team comp. Easy to play against if you know the champ. He can be reliable, though. Maokai, I main, but a lot of matchups just don't work in his favor anymore. He's not in a great spot and his win rates are in the shitter.

Mid: ahri, Fizz, talon. Reason: it seems like you like the assassin play style. Ahri provides your team with poke and utility if you build the slowing ap item, Fizz is more of a bruiser type assassin that is great at all ins and quick in and out assassinations, and talon is an assassin that roams well and is ad. These 3 will give you a good range of styles for you to choose based on your/the enemy team comp. I wouldve suggested veigar for the better late game scaling and cc, but if you're better at assassin's play to your strength.

Top: naut, fiora, reneketon. Reason: naut for a real heavy, true tank. Fiora if you want a fighter/hard carry your team and does well against tanks. And reneketon for an early game bully that can be tanky while still doing decent damage.

3-5 is the best size for a champion pool for learning the game. Just 1 is the best for climbing super fast, especially if you can play that just 1 in both lanes.

That said, a number of your picks are champions that lean more towards a selfless playstyle, particularly for top lane. So, I'm gonna make my comments and suggestions on what you should pick to be in your pool of 3-5 in my opinion. Note that, while I haven't actually tried climbing the ladder, I have played this game casually for 7 years and know what every champion in the game does, where they're good, and why.

MID: Ahri: The single best solo queue mid laner. She's amazing for roams, amazing in lane, safe, and has great teamfights. Her primary weaknesses are that, if people play the pre-6 correctly, they can get fed off of her before she gets the mobility of her ult she needs for safety, her ult cooldown is long and easily punished, and if she misses a charm it can be easy to capitalize on that and kill her. However, I don't expect much by way of lower-tier players to be doing this.

Veigar: Strong scaling if you're able to survive the fairly weak early game. A good pick if you're able to farm and poke well, and can also be relatively safe with his E stopping dashes. His W and R have the potential to be the highest burst in the game if you can play it right in later teamfights. Overall decent if you know what you're doing, though he can be a bit of a double edged sword: lower-tier players won't dodge his E as often, but also won't be able to capitalize on his E if you catch an enemy out, and his shorter range on his ultimate can force him to overextend if he doesn't have a tank in front of him to protect him, which again takes more skill and coordination than I would expect from any non-5-man team. Can be a stomp champion if you duo with a jungle tank main, though.

Diana: Weak pre-6 as she is an assassin with no gap closer, absurd after. I personally prefer her in the jungle, and haven't played her mid lane much even with maining her for a month or 2. I don't exactly know her mid potential from experience, but VS a ranged matchup I would expect her to be bullied out pre-6 if the opponent has half a brain and delayed and kept weak until she's allowed to scale in. I wouldn't pick her mid myself, but her strong scaling means that she can, if she is played well in the early game, find success.

Katarina: I fucking love this champion. Broken as all hell if you know what you're doing, but is completely useless if you don't. If you wanted to 1-trick any champion on this list, Katarina would be the one I recommend the most. However, unless she is your most picked of the pool and you choose to main mid, she can be fairly weak as you don't get as much practice with all her combos or learn just what you can and can't pull off in the early game.

Talon: Amazing roaming, decent lane phase (able to pull off a level 2 kill if you're smart), and strong mid game teamfight and late game split potential. I would call him basically easier, AD Katarina, with better roam and split push potential but weaker late game teamfighting.

Morgana: Honestly, she's better support. I have never played her mid, though I have played against her. A good assassin can just ruin her and make her useless.

TL;DR: Ahri is the best of the picks; the rest can be decent if played well, though I wouldn't recommend Morgana or Diana, and I also wouldn't recommend Katarina unless you play her a lot.

Final call: Keep Ahri, Veigar, and Talon on, unless you plan to play Katarina a ton, in which case I would probably cut Veigar for her.

Aatrox: I'm not sure how he plays after his recent changes and then buffs, but with how weak he's been for as long as he's been weak, he can catch people off guard with his lifesteal and dueling potential, though he can also just still be useless. I really don't know. Also, expect future changes coming for him, so he probably won't be that good in a champion pool.

Nasus: Strong farm and split push style, the 15% passive lifesteal makes him unexpectedly tanky in the lane, great scaling as you build full tank and continue to ruin everyone, but weak early game if you don't just hit minions and ignore the pain. Honestly, there are better picks. I would personally recommend Sion over Nasus. Stronger lane phase, has an infinite health scaling, more damage, strong engage, and more CC than just a slow.

Renekton: Is and always has been one of the strongest lane bullies in the game, hasn't been changed in years. Highly recommend.

Dr. Mundo: A tank who is very difficult to kill, but there are just straight better picks. Nunu does the same exact job, but from the jungle and his CC is targeted.

Fiora: Similar to Katarina, very strong one-trick champion but otherwise probably not worth playing.

Hecarim: Don't play Hecarim top. If you wanna play him, jungle him, but please don't play Hecarim top.

Mordekaiser: That third Q fucking hurts. Depending on the enemy team, if they pick to let him destroy them, can be a strong situational pick, though I wouldn't recommend for maining. Pick Darius and do something similar, but with a stronger late game capable of getting pentakills if you're fed enough.

Garen: Does somewhat of a similar job to Mordekaiser as well: get on them and they die, but if the enemy team has half a brain you probably won't get on them. However, in probably gold is when I'd say his usefulness would cut off (just a guess), as higher gold players I would expect to be able to kite and just not give any amounts of shits about the Demacian warrior.

Gnar: Annoying as hell to face in lane, I've actually never learned how to play against him properly. Strong teamfight engage with the ability to jump in and throw out stun after stun after stun, but then once his combo is blown he's useless until it comes back up, at which point he's probably dead.

Singed: the proxy farm strat is annoying, but also a double-edged sword. Most teams you face will fall apart to your split pushing and you can win the game with that alone, but in the event that they don't, your team probably won't take advantage of the attention you draw well enough to take objectives around the map. I personally wouldn't pick him, but he can be good if you know how to not die when you get a whole enemy team coming to kill you while you're behind their inner turret.

Nautilus: A big, giant tank who can't do anything without his team. Too team reliant, would not recommend.

Jax: Strong late game scaling, if your opponent doesn't know how to fight you early, can be strong early game, and amazing in both split pushing and teamfighting, though better at splitting.

Maokai: Like Nautilus, he is a big tank who is better when his team helps him out. Unlike Nautilus, he can deal more damage and he is less team reliant. However, I would wait to put any real time into him until the tank update comes out, which we know he's one of the big reworks in that.

TL;DR: A number of these picks are either straight up bad, better in other lanes, or tanks that are better in a team environment. Others are powerful lane bullies or have great late game scaling.

Final Call, I recommend keeping Renekton, Maokai, Jax, and potentially Fiora if you play her a lot on the list.

Both:

Akali: Basically Diana, but better. I would play her mid lane over top lane, but I can see her use.

Fizz: Like Akali, he's just better in mid lane. I wouldn't even play him top lane at all.

Heimerdinger: Split push donger, you fucking dick. A good Heimer top is not something I would want to face, though he's fallen out of favor in mid lane with how easy he is to counter. Banner of command Zz'Rot Portal Zhonya's Rylai's. Proceed to fuck shit up and make people rage quit. Sleeper OP.

Finally, Malphite. Please don't play Malphite mid. Pick Galio instead. He can top or mid decently well and does the exact same job 10x better.

TL;DR: Akali and Fizz I would only play mid, Heimer only top, and Malphite I would just play Galio instead.

Final call: Fizz and Heimer are good, and I would keep them on the list. Cut Akali and Malphite. Galio is a better version of Malphite, but he is also more team reliant. I wouldn't recommend even putting him in for solo queue, though duo/flex he can be pretty good.

Yeah, that's a pretty strong solo queue pool for mid/top, having the strongest mid and top laners for solo queue (Ahri and Renekton), while also having some good backups (Veigar and Talon) and quite the surprise pick with the Heimerdinger top lane. See you on the rift, and if you play the donger top lane I may just have to kill you because the split push strat with him can be legit evil if you pull it off right. I would say to rush Zhonya's, then Rylai's, then get your Banner + Zz'Rot combo for the split pushing. You don't need them till late game. Final options could be Deathcap, Abyssal Scepter, Liandry's, or Void Staff, depending on what you really want and what you're against. Deathcap if not stacking MR, Abyssal if AP heavy, Liandry's if health tanky, Void Staff if MR tanky.

As for your supports, there are better, less team reliant picks. Lulu is pretty busted in the current meta, and Brand and Blitzcrank are always good as solo queue supports if you can hit their skillshots. A good Blitz hook can turn a game around, meanwhile a good Brand can literally 1v5, even from support. I've done it and I don't even own Brand. I would suggest them as your autofill picks instead of Nautilus and Sona, just because of how much work they can do solo and how easy it is to follow up when they get it right.
