I'd rather treat them as a Plan B than something to just rely on a whim, regardless of the champion in question.

I have 8 customizable rune pages.

Most games I end up just picking the one I labeled 'spare page' and building something from scratch.

I do. I don't main too many champions, so my sense of customization is a bit stiff, but I have enjoyed messing around with the system to accommodate the strengths and weaknesses of those that I do play.
