Sort of always wondered why. I understand that most of his abilities have some sort of thematic connection to the water diving, drowning, deep sea and all that.
But I couldn't figure out what the idea is with the R when he strikes from above...

Z3SIeeper5 votesYup, it only looks like he's moving diagonally cuz it's so instantaneous. In reality, he's instantaneously diving below the rift, dragging you down and resurfacing.
The "splash" effect is actually from him yanking you into the water and emerging from it.

ModThe Djinn7 votesProbably because canonically he likely often rises from the ocean to leap out at his prey, but gameplay-wise it's more visually appealing, clearer, and more impactful to have him leap from above (as League doesn't have reliable water for him to lurk around in).
Also, as Pyke himself comes from below, all of his kills are technically deaths from below -- just sometimes with a time delay. :P

This is exemplified by the two types of damage the ability has: a small physical damage (Pyke), and a massive true damage (the abyss).
