Maokai is a safe pick in pro play because nobody plays darius or other bully top laner that wil almost certainly get fed off a champion like maokai. maokai is among the weakest fighting champions in top lane. hes melee and hes pretty easily killed before he gets tanky. I had two games in a row where maokai vs camille. that didn't go well. and a maokai vs a swain. that didn't go well either. if you wanna blind pick a tank. nautlius or poppy or malphite are a lot better. since they can somewhat fight back and defend their tower at least.

Maokai is more safe than Malphite. You should be able to survive lane vs Swain without much struggle. I am not familiar with the Camille match up yet.

In the end I do agree that it is not a safe first pick and not a pick that you can carry games with. I classify Maokai as a tank/support.

I agree he is not easy to carry with, but he is a lot of fun to play. His area of effect is too small to carry games with him so you can only chain CC a couple of opponents at most (usually just one) so you ahve lesser impact than other tanks with better AoE like malph, Leo or Amumu.

i have favorable games vs nearly every champ as tree

Na he's viable into almost any top laner. Don't use your W to engage, QE to back off when they do, only use your W to dodge their harass, for instance the Darius spin, and your passive will keep you alive.

Also he can almost farm safely without autos using Q and E

He is a safe pick because even if he goes into a bad match up he can still farm with his E and W (which are ranged).

If he is caught out of position he can W in, then knock up on his way out and E for the slow to disenagage. And if you have mana you can even get an ult in between to make sure you don't die. The CC prevents from easy tower dives since it can turn sour really fast for the attackers.

He is only bad if you decide to play aggresive on a bad matchup but then is on you and is really no safe pick for such a player

Sure, because a lane bully is more threatening than a pro player that is the top 0,005 of the ladder. Piglet didn't went 17/0/12 as ad leblanc top vs blem, a spergic lee sin onetrick. And lee sin is pretty strong early if you ask me.
