AP Shaco with an IE: Possible the best current build for Shaco.

So, as we all probably learned, AP Shaco is doing vastly better than any other Shaco right now. With certain buffs to his AP clear, it's no wonder. So, I got to thinking: Snce my hybrid build isn't working as well as I thought it should, what would happen if I only used one hybrid item and one AD item?

Here's the thought process: Assuming no runes or masteries are had and before resistances come into play, we build the following:

Runic Echoes (2625 gold) Sorc Shoes (1100 gold) Gunblade (3400 gold) Lich Bane (3200 gold) Deathcap (3800 gold) Infinity Edge (3600 gold)

Together, this build nets you a nice 340 + 35% = 459 AP and 117 + 110 = 227 AD.

Shaco's Backstab works with Deceive. That said, we can now easily notice that with Infinity Edge, our backstab is only doing 5% less than a normal crit. So, 195% damage of a spell that is already going to be dealing 227 + 80 = 307 from AD and 50% of 459 = 230 damage from AP. = 537 physical damage. 195% of 537 is 1047 physical damage and Lich Bane will then deal an extra 75% of AD (82) + 50% of AP (230) is an extra 312 magical damage.

One spell will be dealing 1359 damage, assuming you hit them from behind. Follow this up with a Gunblade for 250 + 30% of AP (138) = 388 magical damage and a shiv for 125 + 90% of AP (413) + 85% of AD (193) = 713 magic damage.PLUS then Echoes will proc, dealing an additional 60 + 10% (46) = 106 magical damage

Together, using these three spells, Shaco is able to put out 1400 (+8% of their missing health at the very end) magical damage and 1047 physical damage for 2447 total mixed damage to his target.

The build is expensive at 17,725 gold, but this is looking like one of the most promising paths to build assuming you're able to earn gold for it. While perhaps not the absolute best against tanks (you'll only have around 35 magic pen), you'll be able to do what your role says you should. Goodbye, pesky ADC's, midlaners, and squishy jungles.

If my math is incorrect, please feel free to correct it. If anyone would like to work out what it looks like with runes and masteries, by all means, do so. Let's talk about this build, shall we? Thoughts? Comments? Concerns? Know a way to make it better? Let's hear it.

Questions - can your auto do a normal crit when backstabing/do normal crits take precedence over backstab crits? if so, how does that interact with Q damage?

I believe Backstab takes precedence, but I'm not 100% on that. Backstab always guarantees a crit and backstab crits apply to Deceive. Assume every backstab will be a guaranteed backstab crit and apply to Deceive.

In 6.23 the Backstab takes precedence. In 6.24 it will choose the larger of the two.

For a champion so reliant on his skills, I'm not sure about only having the 10% CDR from Lich Bane on an AP build. Not sure what you could drop for more, though; the best I can think of is Protobelt over Gunblade, but that just got nerfed. CDR runes are another option.

This is true. You have the option to use CDR runes instead of AP blues and get 10% CDR. This is why I did the math without runes or masteries taken into account. Personally, I don't mind not having a lot of CDR, since this will pretty much insta-gib whoever you're after anyway. It can help with faster Deceives or poking, but generally speaking you shouldn't need the extra CDR. Personal preference based on playstyle, IMO. The build is built around bursting, not poking or sustained AP damage.

"So, as we all probably learned, AP Shaco is doing vastly better than any other Shaco right now"

I'd like to see some data on that.

Does IE item 3031 interract with the auto-crit of Shaco's backstab passive? I'm not aware of whether it does or doesn't. I can see how, if IE does boost the backstab damage, the math of a perfect combo on a backline squishy could support its inclusion in an otherwise full AP build.

However, every circumstance that isn't getting a perfect combo on a backline squishy would probably support Void Staff over IE in a full AP build. Hell if I was going to throw one key AD item into an AP build, I'd even prefer a Tiamat item 3077 item over IE item 3031 to synergize with the one late game role where Shaco's traditionall excelled: backdoor & split pushing.

Try it out for yourself. You'll see a vast difference in strength for sure. We've been discussing it quite a lot in the Shaco club I'm in. All our data points to it being so.

It does, or it should. It increases crit damage by 50% and Backstab is a -55% crit. Thus why its inclusion.

Perhaps but you have to remember that it's relatively easy to make it to their backline as Shaco in stealth now. There's not a whole lot stopping you from getting that backstab off. Riot specifically said they wanted to nerf his split-pushing and backdooring, though. Yes, you could get a Hydra but assuming that you can get what should be easy backstabs off, you shouldn't need anything like that.
