Do normals affect ranked MMR any?

I feel like they affect it a tiny bit, because this season I just finished my provisionals with a 4/6 score and I placed Silver II in Solo/Duo Queue. I was Silver II in Dynamic Queue at the end of last season, and I did not play ranked in the preseason. I had only played normals up until I decided to do my provisionals. In Flex Queue I went 6/4 and placed Silver I, which is even higher than my Dynamic Queue ranking!

I remember the Boards being in uproar about how low they placed after the soft reset, and yet here I am the same rank in Solo/Duo and a rank higher in Flex with average provisional scores. Do you think that all the normals I played from the soft reset until now could have brought my MMR back to what it was before the reset?

So, this is how i understand it. There are basically 3 MMR now. Used to be just 2; 1 for norms, 1 for ranked.

Now there are 3:

  1. Normals
  2. Solo/Duo (based on your old season)
  3. Flex (Which since new is much like doing ranked for the first time.)

There are also different MMRs for Twisted Treeline Blind and Flex, along with Howling Abyss, right?

Anyways, how do you think I placed the same rank as last season in Solo/Duo by going 4/6? Almost everyone I know played ranked at the start of the season and dropped significantly.

People have a separate MMR for ARAM, ranked 3v3, normal 3v3, and each individual RGM, as well as the 3 SR MMRs mentioned.

You said you went S1 with Flex.

During your first time in ranked you are basically given Silver something.

This is the same for Flex this year. Since it is new and unestablished, you should get some sort of Silver. The scaling is also different for them. Somewhere I read that Silver in Flex is kind of like bronze in solo. That might be wrong though.

First time in ranked (Season 5) I placed Silver II going 4/6, in Season 6 I placed Silver III going 5/5 then I climbed to Silver II, in Season 7 I placed Silver II going 4/6 and Silver I going 6/4. It seems like the soft resets at the beginning of the seasons did absolutely nothing to my MMR and I want to know why.

The normals did not affect your MMR. Although, the skill gained from them translated into your ranked games.

How do you explain going 4/6 in provisionals and placing the same rank after the ranked reset? I remember seeing people complaining about going 9/1 and still dropping a division.

Your score in placements doesn't guarantee placing anywhere. Not all provisional matches are equally weighted when affecting your MMR. People who go 9/1 and DON'T complain since they went up won't be heard from because they aren't cry babies. If you still have no clue and genuinely want to know about the ranking system feel free to add me.

I do understand that people who went up wouldn't make threads, but I remember Riot saying that your climb will most likely start lower than last season because of new changes. In other words, they did a soft reset to signify that since everyone was starting anew in season 7 they would start lower and show how they adapted to the big changes in order to climb back to their original ranks. This soft reset happens every season and pretty much everyone starts lower. https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/E9nkYATc-psa-regarding-ranked-placement-and-seedings-for-all-who-are-confused

I know not all provisionals are equally weighted because of different MMRs of opponents. For example, one of the four matches I won with with a Silver V duo, so my opponents' MMRs were lower and therefore I got even less MMR than when I was solo.

I think you might just be hopeless that this point.

I provide evidence and you call me hopeless?

No, normals don't impact your ranked mmr, or vice versa.

I'm pretty sure they affect it pre-30 though, that's why people with the same scores in provisionals can place different ranks, and why smurfs often get pretty high ranks.

I feel like my normals MMR affected my ranked MMR slightly, because I should have dropped a lot with a score of 4/6 and with the soft reset at the beginning of the season.

You're placed based on your final ranked mmr at the end of provisionals, not necessarily your w/l ratio. Theres some random variation of the MMR's of the people you happen to be matched with (increasingly so the longer the matchmaking time is), so two people with the same ranked w/l ratio may have slightly different MMRs, potentially resulting in different ranks.

On top of that, duoing really can change the mmrs of the players involved, so a fresh 30 account duoing with a high gold mmr player (or ideally a 'gold' player with plat mmr) and going 10-0 could potentially place plat 5, while on the other hand a fresh 30 duoing with their bronze 5 buddy could go 10-0 and still place 'only' silver 4 (or go 9-1 and end up in bronze).

I did do a duo queue with a Silver V and won one of my four games that way, which gave me less MMR than normal because I generally face slightly higher ranked opponents, and I did another duo queue with a Silver II and lost. The rest of my matches in Solo/Duo queue were all solo.
