Could we consider moving to an Overwatch-style ranking system?

MMR (probably renamed LP) is flat-out your ranking. Ranks (Silver, Gold, etc.) are thresholds, and once you pass them you get that rank for the rest of the season. Divisions still exist and can be dropped out of, except V. Diamond and above can be dropped out of.

No promos and your actual ranking is a lot clearer, but maintains the vast majority of the benefits and functionality of the current system. Thoughts?

I'm all for going back to Season 2 league where there were no promos and everything, but not letting people demote is a boosters paradise, and leads to shitty play for people who rank themselves up and then get stuck in the cess pool that Gold V, Plat V, Diamond V become.

that ranking system is a lot less meaningful, definitely a ranking system for casuals, the system itself almost sounds like a single player game mode concept, only would work if you are the only human player.

Not being able to drop from a V division sounds like a terrible idea.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

edit: To clarify, Overwatch's feel good ranking system is an absolute pile of dog shit, and I'd appreciate it if Riot never even considered copying it.

No, bring back the old ELO. What you see as divisions, tiers, LP and all this utterly pointless crap is just that, a pointless crap. The real deal is currently hidden from your view and that thing affects who people are matched with.

The difference is, there's no "season high" in ELO system.

That's just retarded... You will have people bragging about their rank like in overwatch but in the real case their mmr/lp/sr is actually shit and low

Escheton3/13/2017, 8:43:43 PM3 votes

So you are saying once I hit gold early in the year I can play ranked as casually as I want for as long as I want; as long as I don't get banned I get my reward at the end of the year? Not sure if bad because trolls. Or good because relaxed atmosphere due to lack of pressure from demotions.

idontgiveabother3/14/2017, 3:15:49 AM3 votes

That means my winstreaks are finally worth something. Not just "get to my promos and have the curse happen." As risky but rewarding as the system sounds, I would love to try it out. I know the overwatch ranks have a bell curve of sorts compared to league which is just a extremely steep cliff after gold-ish.

All the boosted bronzies in diamond would never demote.

Lock On3/14/2017, 1:58:44 AM2 votes

That mostly sounds awful tbh. I could troll hard the second my smurfs hit gold for funsies, but it's k because I earned that elo + rewards for the rest of the season anyway.

Every tier/division should be available for decay, as it was before, with slightly faster rates as you climb the ladder. This will help differentiate between the boosted monkeys and those who've truly earned their spot, which raises the value in achieving higher ranks. You don't want more of the same mediocre players regardless of how far you climb.

They Should do away with promos and go back to their old system where it was based purely on tiers (bronze, silver, gold, etc.) without divisions I thru V, or at least base a new system off of it and make "MMR" more transparent.

Elo was fine before they changed it. Having clarity is always nice in my book

Personally, I would prefer a Hearthstone-esq ranking system.

Bronze thru Gold would be Ranks 25->1. Everyone starts at rank 25, winning more than you lose will move you up. Matchmaking will match you with only people +/-1 of your number rank. Past rank 1 is Plat and above using a similar system to what Masters/Challengers use now.

Overwatch in general feels worthless. Lets be real, every game is about trying to nab your 3 seconds of feel good during play of the game

I feel like the flaw with Overwatch's ranking system is the matchmaking. It can get pretty wonky and screw up chances of winning entirely. Other than that, it's pretty fair since most people are where they deserve to be. But then again, League isn't great in that kind of sense either if not worse.

I don't like the LP system paired with wonky matchmaking because promos are complete bullshit. What's wrong with passing a threshold and moving on? Instead, League subjects players into a game of Russian Roulette in order to determine if they truly deserve to move up. Half of the time, it just feels like a fruitless effort for a player to successfully complete their promos. I get that it is supposed to be a challenge, but from my 6 years of playing League, it isn't fun once you do it for the 10th time.

Ranked should be purely based on win/loss ratio. This is the best judgement of how well you are doing from game to game. Let's face it, if you are 100-0 on an account, you're clearly doing things right.

Flawless Fetus3/14/2017, 3:12:01 PM1 votes

We should "move to" how league used to be. Your mmr (what was then elo) is a plain and visible number certain thresholds at certain points. ~1200 bronze. ~1500 silver. ~2000 gold. ~2500 plat. Something like that. But you need to be able to drop. If you're low silver, lose a game, and end up at 1194 elo, you are now bronze. Exactly how league used to function. I've no idea why the changed it. Our elo still exists, just now it is hidden and referred to as mmr. What we currently have is really stupid.

What's the point of this system ?? actual system is good enough already and help weak player to climb
