Less than 0.5% of players played Dominion

Zenthon Prime··203 votes·8,422 views

There's probably 10 threads on the front page right now complaining about its removal. Everyone claims they played tons of Dominion.

Ok.

UPDATE: The front page is no longer clogged up with threads about Dominion. At the time of posting, a few hours after the announcement, there actually were somewhere between 10 and 15 threads complaining. Hopefully this clears up any misunderstandings.

I think people are more annoyed with the fact that Riot barely even tried to care for the map at all.

People stopped playing/caring dominion because riot stopped balancing it around like season 3. (As far as I remember anyways, correct me if I'm wrong please)

There was little to no reason to even try playing the game mode when riot barely did anything about bots in the mode and ignored it anyways.

I'd agree that Riot's treatment of Dominion was garbage, don't get me wrong. I'm just baffled by how many people are coming out of the woodwork and flipping their shit over a game mode they never played.

I honestly feel like people do care about Dominion, but they just had no incentive to play it over Summoner's Rift.

I'll be honest I only played dominion like 3/4 times this year, and to be fair, that's probably more than I played it last year. It's just disappointing to see Riot do away with the game mode when it feels like they could really do something with it.

That being said, I think we all knew this would happen eventually, even if some of us didn't want it to.

Thumpin6 votes

I used to play it a lot actually. Haven't since late season 2, just didn't seem fun to me anymore. I really don't care if it stays or goes since I personally don't get any enjoyment from it.

But I know there are those who did, and I can't help but wonder why Riot is removing it. There's no reason unless it was drawing excessive resources from SR.

Doctor Ivellius4 votes

Just curious--what do you think is a reasonable number of games to have to have played to be upset about this? What's a reasonable number of games to decide Riot didn't care about the game mode and switch to modes that were much more heavily incentivized to play?

Trídent6 votes

does the .5% include the people who play customs?

A lot of people have fond memories of hide n seek, that's the main reason why I don't want dominion to go

BastionKross10 votes

You also have to consider the precedent this sets. Now Riot can look at something unpopular about League, and just remove it. Rather than putting in the effort to save it, they can just do away with it. How long before Twisted Treeline gets the trigger pulled on it? Is ARAM popular enough to save it from being put down? Will season 7 be the time when all we have left to choose from is SR and custom games that take place on SR?

That's a horrifying thought, and yesterday I'd have called you crazy for suggesting it. Now, I'm having serious doubts. Players really do not like this "nobody plays it, time to get rid of it" philosophy. What if they decided to do that with champions? Galio would be the first to go. Urgot a close second.

Players aren't just angry at the removal of a game mode, they're mad at the idea behind it and what if could mean for the future.

Zenthon Prime13 votes

That's some serious slippery slope thinking.

Besides, they already do it with champions. It's called a full rework.

KaisadiIIa2 votes

Why on Earth would they remove ARAM? That game mode was solely created due to its popularity, it's (afaik) the second game mode before TT nowadays and it has a highly stable playerbase.

Dominion wasn't "unpopular". It was a huge fail that attracted no one after a few games, took a lot of resources to maintain minimally balanced and was populated by farm bots.

Hell, it was more of a joke than a game mode. You just needed to mention "Dominion" in any forum and any answer you'd get were jokes like "Is that the new champion?"

I'm sorry for those humans at /r/totallynotrobots that enjoyed Dominion, but I see nothing wrong on removing the biggest fail in this game.

Arcade Andrew7 votes

That's exactly why we are flipping shit over it, I used to play ONLY dominion in S2 till boys overan it. I'm mad because instead of fixing it, the first time they actually mention it in THREE FUCKING YEARS they remove it.

I only went to SR because they left Dom to get fucked by bots. SR is the shittiest game mode and nape and I hate it but it's the only one I can play without worrying about bots, glitches or balance(hah)

I wish they made dominion ranked so I could quit SR and get challenger in my preferred game Mode

RocketRelm6 votes

To be fair, a lot of the people 'coming out of the woodwork' are probably legitimately concerned. 0.5% of players who had access, even 0.1%, is still a lot of people. I can 100% believe that there's 50 or so people that would come to the boards on such a big event, and I've gotta imagine almost literally every active hardcore Dominion player is posting.

Why should they pour time and effort into a map that nobody plays?

Minarde4 votes

Because at least part of the reason nobody plays is because Riot didn't put time and effort into it. They promised various features at launch, yet dropped the map three months later.

GuiltyGecko18 votes

If we go by Riot's numbers on their website, in 2014, 27 million people play at least 1 league game a day. I would consider that an active player. So, .5% of that is...135,000 players. So lets say 15% of those players were bots. That leaves roughly 115,000 dominion players. This minority becoming vocal on the forums would explain the rise in "I played dominion" threads if even a small fraction of these 115,000 dominion players decided to complain.

Decrit1 votes

But then that people would be scattered over lots of mediums, like other boards or maybe no site at all.

This reduces the presence here even further.

GuiltyGecko2 votes

I have no doubt that some of the dominion complainers are phonies, but the population is large enough that even if it's spread over the two largest League forums (here and reddit) there's still thousands of legit dominion players. Enough to get noticed on either site.

I bet 90% of them haven't played Dominion in months/years, but as soon as something is going, they said they love it and will play it then when they riot decide to keep Dominion, they won't touch the mode again.

I think some people just have a pure hate for the Riot Staff and will use anything as a basis for complaint... like people complained about the Snow Down sales? LOL they don't have to give discounts you ungrateful turd.

lightdragoon882 votes

oh yeah...the hate about what they got in the store.

Klae2 votes

Yeah. I mean I got poo skins that I didn't want, but aye not going to whine about it.

Yumifries9 votes

Doesn't get enough love, From both players nor the staff. But I expected this to be honest. Look at the bright side, Dominion queue might actually be pretty short for once since people are going to try to play it before it goes away for good. ;)

I am not surprised by the amount of salt, actually. It's pretty natural considering Riot fucked up the communication. Plus the echo chamber effect makes it look worse than it is.

What I am baffled by is the amount of complainers who look like they didn't read the official post or were too ignorant to try to understand it. Not to mention L4t3ncy repeated the official statement through commenting here, on Boards.

People understand the post, they just thoroughly disagree with it

But frankly, the worst part of this announcement is they're removing it but not replacing it with something else.

Smithney3 votes

If I understood well, Riot mentioned that they are embracing the seasonal alternative game modes. If it means the spin-off gamemodes will be released more often and will be better supported, I don't see why they couldn't work as a reasonable replacement for Dominion.

As a sidenote, I really don't think some of the people took care to understand the official post. Disagreement is one thing, but I have seen far too many sqeamish posts that had no substantial reasoning behind them.

Ariel the Cruel6 votes

I'm opposed to Dominion's removal. I'm more opposed to Riot's excuses. I played Dominate Dominion back when it didn't conflict with my work schedule. I still played it occasionally when I was tired of SR. I would by lying to claim it was my dominate mode though.

As for the 0.5% of the player base, lets just low ball some numbers. League has one-million active players; 0.25% of the community plays dominion and isn't a bot. That would mean Dominion has 2 500 active players. While a fractionally small part of the player base, that's still a lot of people. As for why they're posting now: Riot had an unofficial unspoken policy about ignoring dominion. There was no incentive to speak up before.

Also worth noting, Dominion wasn't launched outside NA and EU. So it's safe to say, all the affected persons are using the English forums.

Jacknife3 votes

And? You said it yourself, the percentage of people who play Dominion is amazingly fractionally small. I'm pretty sure if Riot pulled up a pie chart of their entire active playerbase and cut out the Dominion players, then cut the ACTUAL Dominion players out of that, the slice would be so small you couldn't even see it. No sane company would try to devote a huge amount of resources (in this case AN ENTIRE MAP) for such a small amount of people, even if they were completely non-profit.

I'm sorry the game modes you've had fun with for years are going away, I'm not trying to bash that, but from a business perspective WITH PROFIT NOT BEING A FACTOR Riot's completely justified. The amount of upkeep they did to make it worthwhile is sad, but the fact of it is there's just nothing that can be done with it outside of a full blown redevelopment of how Dominion works, with all the problems current Dominion has still there.

Wizzleboom5 votes

Dominion was crap and it never got an update because it was crap.

Remlap12234 votes

It wasn't crap, it just wasn't popular.

Zenthon Prime9 votes

I think it would be far more accurate to say that Dominion doesn't really appeal to the League playerbase as a whole to the extent that Featured Game Modes, TT or ARAM do. I mean, I started way back in mid 2012 (Darius release patch) and even then it was unpopular.

Minarde4 votes

By the time of the Darius patch, Dominion had already gone five months without any updates. That probably had a non-negligible effect on its popularity.

Keep in mind riot said they rounded up, and that most of those were bot accounts.

So. probably not even 75,000

RedWarrior19135 votes

.5% is still 335,000+ people. That's easily enough to flood the boards for a while.

Ahhh you know I think riot should have scrapped TT, Crystal Scar, and Howling Abyss. Summoners Rift got updated (Competitve Play) I have seen TT a little updated. But crystal scar is so outdated like rammus splash art. The only reason I played on it was Ascension. Then even that got shitty because usual 15 champs are powerful as fuck. I don't know why people actually care. I was more mad about atma's impaler getting removed. I'm even more mad about the AD item for assassins. Dominon is stale. WHY? Because people pick same fucking champions every time it feels like.. (Rammus, Garen. Mundo) So if someone is going to cry about it. Move on it's life. Shit gets taken away from you. Sometimes without warning. (At least Riot said "We are retiring dominion") If they got rid of TT ok. How many people will have a shit storm for that? Twisted Treeline feels almost the same as Crystal Scar. Just more scarier and more action than rift. God Damn it's Riot's fucking game get over your shit. BoY!

That's why im Bronze 2. (Because people are fucking idiots when it comes to games. Like 0.5% ! of daily people play dominon? not 1 % or even 0.75%) GOD DAMN my dad would beat the shit out of me if I cried about it!

Ariel the Cruel3 votes

Then even that got shitty because usual 15 champs are powerful as fuck.

And this is different from SR how? Metas exist for a reason.

Dominon is stale. WHY?

Because Riot ignored it. They made no attempt to balance it after the first year or so. And even then, they only half-assed it. If Riot were to ignore SR and leave it in the exact state it is now, you would get the same result. THAT is why people are upset.

Evêñtfûl Hôrïzôñ3 votes

0.5% is still something! Nasus :3 (Don't ask me why I keep inserting Nasus everywhere)

Zenthon Prime5 votes

That number includes bot accounts too, though. :/

Evêñtfûl Hôrïzôñ1 votes

Some people might like fighting bots. (Even though that might get boring, why REMOVE a MAP?)

Zenthon Prime3 votes

Because even though practically nobody plays it, they have to keep it up and try to make sure it works any time they make balance changes or new items and such. That's actually a lot more work than you'd expect.

Usually the most vocal people are the ones that something actually affects. IE the people posting are the ones that have been playing or played and are part of the .5% of players. With 20 million players in the game it's easy to see that the people posting about dom are well within .5% of the league population.

Riot also says only 1 % of their player base are toxic. The way Riot calculates their statistics is vastly different than the way everyone else would. I dont know how you can screw up calculating the legit percentage of players who play Dominion, but I have to assume Riot did. This is what happens when your company is run by children. Idiots everywhere. A degree does not equal intelligence.

Tahngarthor4 votes

"only 1% of players are toxic" ^ lol... I see at least one person trying to stir the pot in every game- putting the toxic rate at a minimum of 10% in my eyes.

Mike170321 votes

If it really is .05%, that is still a whole lot of people.

.05% of the player base is still 3.5 million people give or take. More than enough to flood the front page if the mode they enjoy is being removed. That isn't far off from the active player base of World of Warcraft at this point, all just in Dominion.

League is a big, BIG game.

Bettnachleger4 votes

Where the fuck you got your numbers from? 7000000000 active player? lol you know what? That's nearly the whole world population [slayer-jinx-catface]
