Playing support tends to be boring is the problem. Outside of 'what can i contribute?' - which is basically decided entirely by the current meta (IE build Redemption, Sightstone variant, Locket, Boots ... oh and then you can pick what you wanna do....if the game goes that long) support is very, VERY bland. No real variety, no specific goals other than keep your carry/team alive and drop wards without dying.
The question Riot really needs to ask is this:
Assume your team gets wiped out, and you, as support, are the only one alive on your team. What do you do (aside from die trying to defend your nexus 1v5 of course)? You can't really push a lane (solo squishy with 5 enemies up and no support from team is a death sentence), can't take any objectives regardless (most supports do minimal damage), and can't normally 1v1 an opponent let alone 1v5.
The sole exception is WHY the mage support meta has come to be. At least with a mage support you can do things, even if you're alone, and you can still contribute with some spell affects as needed. I'm M6 Soraka and Sona, M5 Zyra (pre-recent nerf), but lately I've been having more success with Morgana or tank supports because they don't automatically die in a fight.
