Why I would not recommend LOL to a friend.

I told my step son about League when I saw it one a youtuber's channel. I thought that it looked cool. I didn't know at the time it was one of the most popular games in the world. I originally saw the appeal. It was free and it was like a chess match between two different teams. But then I started to learn the ins and outs of how the game was put together and the Type of company Riot seemed to be based on the constant balancing champs had to go through.

I still think its fun but it is more simplistic than I thought at first. There really isn't that many different strategies you can use to win. I'm talking like in chess you have various openers and attacks. How many does LOL have? I thought all the champs were viable at one time. Once I fell into the understanding of the meta I knew what made sense on a basic level I thought... oh this is all there is.

I hit level thirty and it was like the flood gates of Mordor opened up and trolls came out. Now I can barely remember what it was like when I was having fun learning new things. I see something new every now and then. I use to think that I would find a group of good people to play with and we would organically form a team. How would I know that most people that find a group that love playing together despised playing ranked. And the toxicity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! At one point I was duped into thinking that Riot cared a little about its player base because of the TRIBUNAL. Then they took it away in an attempt to automate it (I guess). Companies do that. "Boss said a computer can do my job better than me."

This thing called "Solo Queue" would be what everyone graded themselves by. It was odd to me considering this is team based game. Ranked seems like just more normals when you are in Bronze or Silver and I am told it doesn't get better the higher you go. Urf the first time around got me playing again. But the second coming..... eh. Ya know.

All in all you get what you pay for. It was fun for a while but like a Plat player smurfing.... I got bored. A game this old would have been on its second or third iteration and players would have been yelling for new mechanics and at least a different board to play on. I guess when a game is free the player base lowers its standards. Ya know if they wanted to expand strategic diversity or heighten game mechanics they would put meta breaking champs int the game or add another role. I can think of a few concept off the dome. I'm sure they have too but I guess its easier to keep doing what you are doing. We don't flex muscles we don't have to use.

I would not recommend this experience to a friend. How is that Tribunal coming?

I think you are missing the mini games with in the game. Most lane match ups are not static at plat and lower. Laning and how you move into the mid game changes from game to game depending on how well everyone did and team composition.

You also do not seem to do 5s. Premade 5s is way more flexable than solo/duo. Your team can go for cheese and try to force wins with weird comps if you desire.

League and chess are bad comparisons and you should not ever compared the 2.

  1. Lets start off with one is a 1v1 and the other is multi player team base. This completely changes the dynamic of a game.
  2. League requires mechanical skill and chess does not.
  3. Real time snap decisions

The team part could be broken down even further.

You really do not understand what you talking about overall. You may be correct for not waiting to invite a friend, but your reasons are terrible.

So league is harder to master than chess? there are more variables in LOL than chess?

Factors: feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Not in any particular order

  1. Champion select vs lane
  2. Team comp.
  3. Team cohesiveness
  4. Individual skill (which is pretty close to one another the higher your teir)
  5. Map awareness
  6. Objectives
  7. Mechanics

There are basic principles that are adhere to in most any game. The further you deviate from them by your choice or by force from the opposition, the less likely you are to win. The difference in many games is a weak link. If one person gets dominated it becomes a 4 on 5 game. I speak in general terms cause most of the community is in the bottom 2 divs. That should tell you something on it's own. No gradual progression of a rise to greatness if you look on from outside. One day you become so strong that even weak links can't hold you back. That is how I have heard it explained. It has been said that most games are decided early and it just take a long time to finish them off. It can take a team with an 8k advantage 10 extra minutes and a baron to finish off a worthless team. I tossed that in their its not really a point.

Much of the game is an attempt to unbalance things in your favor (even before the game has begun). So yeah maybe you are right. In chess everyone starts off equal and it takes pure skill and cunning to win. Touche?

Did not say this at all. Please learn to read. I said they are different not harder or more variables. The concept of the games are totally different. You either have 0 reading comprehension or being a troll. The only thing i said chess did not have was team aspects, mechanics and real time strategy.

It seems to me like you're analyzing the game too much for it to be fun, .. which is why it isn't fun. There actually are a lot of different ways to play the game, but 'the meta' does tend to get a bit stagnant and repetitive, so I will agree with that.

Ultimately, it is a free to play game, but you do get more than you pay for.

Occams Raiser1 votes

I suppose you are right. It is better than nothing. but what a metric to measure it by, huh. Is it better than nothing? How hard I analyze something has no bearing on how fun it is. This is something simple minded people say. Like people who like bad movies. You shouldn't have to check your brain at the door. How do you play strategy games? It is based off the underpinnings of an RTS.

Honestly, Riot just needs to add more game modes on DIFFERENT MAPS.

SR/TT have the same feeling to it just different champ numbers Dominion is nice just needs..more ARAM is the same as TT/SR if everyone was playing mid

That's what's making league to stale all the time. They have no diversity in game modes. Take SMITE for an example. I didn't like the game when I played it but I did like the different game modes. The different concepts you need to win. The fact they had an arena mode/map.

They enforce the MOBA style gameplay wayyy too hard. It's fun but sometimes you just want to do more. I for one would love a huge map where it's entirely free or all with only say 5 champs in the game. That would make league hell a lot of fun

Most games are the most fun when you're learning and experiencing things for the first time. Once you have all the champions (at least those you want to even try), you know more or less about all the nuances of gameplay, it can get boring quick. That's why we have featured modes and new champions and regular changes, and why an old game like WoW still thrives; new stuff to retain old players and keep throwing out hooks to grab new ones.

My point is, go ahead and recommend it. Let them feel the initial excitement. It might take them a week to get bored, or 5 years. There was a period where you had a ton of fun, and they might too. Besides, it's expected for people to get sick of the same thing and leave for good. Not really surprising for a dedicated player to drop all their investment and leave eventually. What game will you play that is immune to this?

P.S. Lots of toxic assholes in any online anonymous PvP community. The longer you stick around, the more you notice them even if it doesn't get worse.

Honestly, I'd feel downright embarrassed recommending this game to someone else. It takes a long time for even learning to play it to feel fun, and the community really is awful. I don't want anyone I know to think that I enjoy being around that kind of influence, and really I wouldn't want to subject them to it either. The game has some real positives, but I don't think they're enough to encourage anyone to play through the bad parts.

I played a little Dota All-Stars and Dota 2 beta so didn't hit much of the learning curve complete noobs would, so idk what exactly is so hard about it. The game seems pretty easy to learn to me, with tutorial modes (yes, that is the 4th game option underneath Custom) and really stupid Intro bots, beginner guides and constant streaming (some catering to those wanting to learn), even if I didn't have that advantage I don't think I'd agree anyway.

If LoL (calling it a "popular" game is being modest) somehow has too many downsides through learning curve or toxic community, where would you send them as an alternative? HotS? They'd get about 1/4 of the basics from there with a gentle learning curve and not that toxic community (yet). It seems like you'd just steer people away from MOBA's altogether, or point them to games that can't even compare really.

In the end, if you don't think they could like it, it's obviously a judgement call.

I picked up the game in June or July. On the opening pop-up where it asked me if I had played other "RTS" games before, I had no idea what that meant. I'd been coming from simple browser games and iOS games. The tutorial was simple enough.

I remember, it was like my 3rd or 4th game. I was farming top lane, and my team was down mid. I was tunnel visioning my farm (even then I loved to farm), and then all of a sudden the game was over. I asked my team what happened, and one said, "You should play the tutorial, it's helpful". I told them I did, twice. No answer as to how that game ended. I didn't see them at the Nexus, I didn't see the surrender vote, it was just over.

When I read guides, I generally had no idea what they meant. I wasn't able to follow the reasoning on why Ashe's W was better to start than her Q. I didn't know what being in a certain class meant, I didn't know what the stats did. Warding and roaming genuinely terrified me.

I felt like a 10 year old trying to read my mom's calculus books. I'd say it took me about a month to just feel comfortable playing and memorize the map. It took me around 80 games to realize that the beginner bot games are impossible to lose.

Yeah, I would just steer them away altogether. Mostly not to HotS because I can't get into it myself. It's a lot more learning for just not much more depth.

If they can't grasp LoL they probably aren't the kind of person to play video games not called either Call of Duty or Candy Crush anyway, so I guess it's a non-issue.

I actually really like what you said here because I felt the exact same way for the longest time. It actually had the opposite effect for me though. I have always been the type of person to see something that has incredible depth, get a peek under the surface, and then I'm instantly motivated to understand all of it.

I remember attacking the jungle monsters in my first game and I didn't know why they didn't automatically attack me when I walked by them the next time. I honestly had no idea how they played any part in the game at all. This made me want to figure it out though. I watched YouTube videos until I finally figured out that it's a strategy to maximize resources, and it too can be pretty in-depth. Likewise, I didn't really get why some items were better on some champions, what characters scaled on AP vs AD, what Unique Passives were,... Another early game I bought item 1039 while midlaning on Karthus because I planned on buying an item called Spirit of the Spectral Wraith because it looked really strong. My friend asked me why I got that item and it caused me to do the research to understand why it didn't make any sense.

Basically, what I'm saying is that some people like the challenge. I'd say that if you think they may be that type of person, suggest it to them. If you don't know, suggest it to them. If they aren't the type to enjoy it, they will know pretty quickly.

disregardable2 votes

Oh no, that's exactly why I played it too. Not necessarily because it was a challenge, but just because I'm usually able to understand how things work in a few minutes. When that's not the case, I dedicate my life to figuring out how to understand it.

It's just, if you're going to play a video game, you're generally doing it for fun, aren't you? There are way less punishing alternatives to this genre that can fulfill the "challenging" and "deep" checkboxes. Maybe they would like it more than I do, but I'd definitely save this as a last resort-"I have nothing else to recommend" game.

Elite4Runner1 votes

I don't understand why you would really feel that way and continue to play the game, not to mention to really even be involved in the community to the extent of watching the boards.

Yes, there is a huge learning curve to play the game, but that is what I like about it. There are 124 unique champions, each of which have multiple ways to play. That's what is the most fun in my opinion. And the fact that there are so many different champions, it's so difficult to master all of them before Riot changes something. I don't play to be the best, I play for fun.

Occams Raiser1 votes

I like the game for myself as I am already in it and don't need to learn from scratch. I am one the so called toxic player. Toxic Just means I care about winning and I don't like trolls. Trolls are anyone that has knowledge of how to win but does counter productive things to that effect. I know it is a video game but if you think your enjoyment is more important than that of the other 4 people on your team... You are the one in the wrong.

Why would you EVER play chess instead of checkers?
