What are you doing with the Herald Buff?

So, since Preseason showed up on the PBE I've had a fun time playing toplane. It has been nothing too spectacular, but it seems that whenever I win my lane it is apparent to either me or the jungler that someone should take the Herald buff. Herald buff is nice; while the monster hits like a truck and has almost killed two of my junglers (one died to a karthus ult immediately afterwards), the end reward should be worth getting, right? You can then just drive down a lane and put down enough pressure to scare off the enemy jungler.

So, surely the one that gets the buff needs a plan. Three times now me and my jungler have started killing that thing and it's all clear that the jungler just straight up wants it. He pings On His Way to it, and then Smites it. His health is so low that he is forced to go back. He gets his items, runs back into the jungle, and finds out that he has a quarter of the buff wasted. He takes a camp... ganks MY lane, doesn't even stay to give me the empowered minions, and then goes elsewhere to do nothing at all. I know it's preseason now and gameplay patterns are starting to change, but I've found this quite ridiculous. Players need to read tooltips and patch notes, I swear.

Since the Herald does a crapton of damage even to tanks, I get the idea that you'd need to go back afterwards. In this case, Herald may actually make TP more useful since it lets you get out of base (after going back) to get to botlane to stir up some trouble. So, what is up with that Herald buff? Is the monster damage too high, is the buff even worth taking against waveclear comps, is there going to be a unstoppable strat somewhere down the line, and is there a player that actually reads patch notes before an update?

The buff gives me two towers every time and with good lane swapping you can get 4 towers. I think that's worth it. Your team needs to commit to the objective the same as you would dragon.

The new meta will probably look more like 1 top, 1 Mid , 1 Bot, and 2 JG or 1 jg and a roaming sup to aid lanes and protect objectives instead of camping in bot with their ADC. In fact I've already seen lanes break away from traditional role.

Those are some impressive results from committing to Herald. I'll be sure to check that out sometime, and I'm sure many players will get to once a general idea/meta is formed.

A doublejungle/roaming support meta sounds crazy, but also quite a possibility now that the map has been lit up now and how there are actual ADC duelists now other than Vayne. Godspeed to anyone who plays like that and tries starting a trend.

The four towers has only happened for me when Shen has been allowed to take the buff, although I'm sure Twisted Fate and Tahm Kench could pull it off as well. It takes your global ult and a teleport. Top, Bottom, then midx2 followed by a 20 min ff.

Rift's herald doesn't really the top lane become a non island, unless you bring the fight actively to them. (You can pretty much thank the fact that you can't duel it.)

Some people claimed that the rift Herald, would remove the need for TP and allow top laner's to take ignite. (and be lane bullies again.) But, if a team fight breaks out bot lane, or around the dragon pit, You wouldn't be able to take herald as a cross map objective. (meaning that matching your opponents TP is likely still the best option. )

But over all, Rift herald is probably not worth contesting as a main objective. Because if the one person who get's the buff dies, that's a waist. And even with the 50 Global gold, That's not going to make up for getting yourself killed.

See, this was what I was thinking. It does have a degree of power, but also takes more thinking to pull off what was intended from this buff. I like how Riot want players to really commit to their game plan by adding something that influences what happens around the player. It just seems a little inaccessible right now. In situations where it may help there's a bunch of reasons for why you shouldn't get it and then the situations where you should get it appear to be uncommon in the first place.

However, what if Riot actually touches this buff up further? I know it may be a balancing nightmare if they made the buff more reliable by making the minions harder to kill. I can't say for certain that an artificial degree of "this guy shows up, I lose my tower now" is something this game needs. Maybe Riot will make it more accessible. I hope they get some solid information on how players are handling this buff.

Since the patch, the only reason I've taken Herald was for the stacks on Devourer, The turrets are weak enough that you don't really need it to push hard.

Devourer should still work on take downs. As a Jungler, should shouldn't need to take it yourself, as long as an ally gets it.

But good call thinking of Rift Herald when using Devourer. It may have taken longer to get your starting item, but you can stack it faster if you make use of the new objective.
