resolve tree lacks that "i dont know what to choose" feeling that you get from cunning/ferocity

Ben Sharpio··39 votes·2,027 views

I feel like the cunning/ferocity tree now gives you more of a feeling of having trouble picking what buffs you want to take because all of the options they have feel very impactful in many different situations.

This is a good feeling for players to have because cunning/ferocity tree has less of a linear result, that varies because there are so many cool/awesome combinations to think of and it feels like there are more options to choose from.

Resolve tree FEELS kind of good, but i'm biased because the keystone courage of the colossus appeals to the champion i play. But i begin to think about everyone else (for once) and when i think about it, resolve tree feels pretty lackluster in comparison to the other trees because the options you have to choose from between the tiers have a dominating choice, rather than that "wow, these are all really good, what one should i choose" feel.

For example, i think siegemaster could be changed to give armour/mr around ALL turrets, and/or void gates (zzrot), and it will give me that feeling of "competition" between the options in tier 2 of the resolve tree, and so on.

I agree on Siegemaster. It's an amazing idea, but a horrible mastery. It promotes passive, weak, play. I don't like it at all. I think Courage of the Colossus should be tuned more towards tanks, and Runic Armor could be better. But overall, it's a massive improvement, so let's at least acknowledge that before we critique it. (You did say it was "kind of good", I just wanted to emphasize how much better it was then before when we all went into the Resolve tree for that extra 350 health.)

Yeah i agree on that. I was saying it felt kind of good SOLELY because the resolve tree appeals to VERY specific people, and since i only play sion, it feels okay to me, but probably not to everyone else.

CrimsonCobra32 votes

Oh. Well it is selective. Pure damage champs like ADCs, Assassins, and Mages aren't likely to want anything from it. Certainly not the keystones.

I've tried taking more 12 in the defense tree a couple times as ADC. Runic Armor can be quite nice with the lifesteal early, and I did feel a lot more survivable in-lane, but it didn't feel like it did much at all as soon as the game transitioned out of laning phase.

CrimsonCobra31 votes

Yeah. Essentially. I go 12 in Resolve for Bruisers though.

Honestly I think they should change it so that it applies when you are near ANY tower. Otherwise it just feels way to conditional and promotes passive play like you are saying.

maybe near your tower or any destroyed tower?

I think he meant so it's easier to siege enemy towers. I just want scout back.

To be fair, Siegemaster is great for the 1st 5-10 minutes of ARAM when you're stuck under tower against a poke heavy comp. Though it pretty much useless when your team is the one pushing the enemy into the tower.

RocketRelm1 votes

To be fair, its competition is "take 2 less damage from auto attacks" and "+15 move speed in bush". There's not much opportunity cost there in aram.

CrimsonCobra31 votes

True as well. 2 less damage is still good because of minions though. But not as good.

True.

I disagree that I'm ever supposed to be on defense. Sometimes I need to be, but I don't want to be. So I feel like Siegemaster is a step in a direction I don't want to go in. I might need to anyway, but I don't want to.

Thing is though, some champions will spend most of their time under their tower anyway. Might as well throw them a bone.

bonus Armor and mr around all turrets for siegemaster

yes. I like very much. But they need to make it so they turrets armor isn't toiletpaper anymore too.

Insight/Perseverance/Fearless is a tough choice.

**Perseverance **is, and will always be, utter crap due to only affecting base regeneration but the choice between **Insight **and **Fearless **is, to me, a tough one on my favourite Supports - which are beefier ones like Taric and Braum.

Resolve tree will always feel lackluster because it's a lot harder to notice yourself taking less damage than it is to notice an increase in damage. That being said, the resolve tree does suck, and Riot is only encouraging the damage creep.

Make Courage of the Colossus scale up only to 3 champions nearby.

That way you don't have to nerf it to the point it's useless in lane, but it won't be broken in teamfights.

Make Grasp of the Undying heal part scale with level. For example: 1% levels 1-5, 2% levels 6-10, 3% levels 11-15, 4% levels 16-18

Not broken in lane, but useful late game.

Make Bond of Stone redirect damage from ALL nearby allies.

Frontline tanks might not want this because they could die easily, but peel tanks would love this.

not bad suggestions

I think resolve has that "not sure" feeling.

Because nothing quite fits right for most of my champs.

IMO the bush mastery and the biscuit mastery need to swap places.

You want faster roams? lose some damage. You want biscuits? you probably don't really want/need those few defense points anyway. Make a little bit more choice.

The new building block resolve masteries are pretty good.. comparitively.. It's the old ones that kinda suck. Riot is afraid to make resolve good for squishy champs I think and it shows in the restraint of actual tank power in the old masteries.

Siegemaster is pretty strong for tanks top versus ranged. But that's it. Because laning against them makes you passive automatically and gameplay is pulling the wave so you can farm under tower. Won't help them win but that's the masteries best case scenario. The masteries next to it are super extremely weak IMO (except block for lower tier junglers used to be a requirement (double edged sword being so strong is an attack on that for assassin cunning tree junglers)). That is the only reason siegemaster looks possibly decent.

Fearless is best in class in its spot too but only because preserverance is a joke and while sum spell reduction is good it's not actually particularly a tank mastery and might not even affect most of your games certainly not in a way you'll notice.. except the one time I called Darius's flash timer but the time reduction actually got us destroyed in the last second gank.

But do you wanna know why Cunning and Ferocity have such a "Um, what do I choose?" feel about them?

Well if you ask me it's because the mastery reshuffling along with the new ones just makes them feel so incredibly meh when it comes to choosing...several times already I've been trying to decide by thinking "Which one of these will actually be useful?...neither of them kinda are :P"

And Resolve just feels woefully underwhelming all together, it's all Flat numbers and bad ones at that. About the only reason to put points into it is for the Keystones....and that's not a good reason to be putting points into it. They should all feel valuable to an extent.

IceKingChernobog2 votes

There is literally no point in using the resolve tree for jungle voli as they got rid of the one mastry that made it worth while, and grasp of the undying is just.....so bad right now.

When you think about it, the shield granted is a heck lot.

20-190+(0.07xmax health) If you have 3000 hp and your against 5 enemies, assuming your lv 18, you would get about 1100 shield. Thats ridiculous for only 3000 hp, and you can get even more hp to grant a even more ridiculous shield. This makes tank jg last so much longer. BTW: The shield lasts for 4 seconds.

x=amount of enemy champs

rather than that "wow, these are all really good, what one should i choose" feel.

To me it feels more like "man, these are all pretty meh, what should I choose?" lol. Resolve tree doesnt have that many "good" options, Ill agree with that. But imo the options that are good are better than most masteries in the other trees.

CrimsonCobra31 votes

Which tree feels like "man, these are all pretty meh"? (And I do think the better Resolve Tree options are crowding out the rest. I choose between a maximum of two masteries per branch.)

Penns1 votes

Well for example Vampirism/Natural Talent, Greenfathers/Bandit/Dangerous Game or Merciless/Meditation.

Verdade1 votes

I never take Vampirism because it is outclassed by Feast/it's weak mastery overall. Natural talent is superior. Greenfathers is usable on jglers/top laners and botlane ADC/poke supports, bandit only on supports or ranged tops. Dangerous game on everything else.

Meditation allows you to go straight damage without building regen, so it's almost always better for mana users. Merciless for non-mana users.

Oglaf1 votes

The obvious problem with Siegemaster is that eventually it will become useless, and once the laning phase ends you don't want to be under your own towers anyway.

For me, the resolve tree feels like it offers nothing new compared to seasons 5 and earlier.

Back then, masteries were all about flat stats. The idea of the new masteries was to make unique bonuses that you could choose between based on the game circumstances - not just stats to optimize and leave the same. However the resolve tree is just that - flat stats. The only non-keystone interesting resolve tree mastery is summoner's insight and that's really just a fancy flat stat of summoner-spell-CDR.

There's nothing in the tree that makes me go "oh wow that sounds strong I want to second the resolve tree for the tier1/2 masteries (except summoner's insight). I only have a handful of mastery pages that second in to resolve, and they're largely there for insight and because they're old and not updated from last season.

Courage of the Colossus sounds AMAZING and I want to try it out, but when I look at the other levels I feel like I'm sacrificing way too much early power to get a bonus that's entirely conditional for most champions (i.e. most champions don't have targeted hard CC, it's a skillshot and thus the enemy can dodge and make your keystone worthless). It also may be the only keystone that not all champions can take - it only works on hard CC which not all champions have. Sure, I can see that SOME champions would make huge use of it, but it just doesn't exist for others. E.g. it would probably be something amazing for Nasus, aside from the fact he has no hard CC.

Every other tree has all of these other unique things: gain X on action, gain X over time, gain X in this situation. Resolve is largely just "gain Y". Even then, when you do get the other tree as a flat gain, it's often much stronger. E.g. +1.4% armor pen per point is WAY stronger than +0.6 armor/MR per enemy champion per point. 10AD and 15AP at 18 is probably a lot better than 50 health (at level 7 the AD alone is about as good as the health, ignoring the AP entirely). 5% bonus armor and MR is probably a lot less than +2% ability damage.

Muddafragot1 votes

Making skill trees confusing to choose from is good game design.

EROTIC RAID BOSS1 votes

I don't see how you get that feeling any better from ferocity or cunning, their choices are either mostly obvious or, in ferocity, there's like 1 tier where you're deciding which way you want your damage amplified, but even that is like, am I tanky fighter staying in the fight a long time, or am I ranged, situation.
