Riot should 100% know the answer. https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/d8ErZcYz-who-here-can-tell-me-the-very-origin-that-gave-birth-to-project-yi
I'm waiting.
Because i can tell you right now but i don't think riot even knows.

Last i heard, Deadman´s plate VFX came from Sion ult?
And what about the guy who came up with the Yi skin? His name is on the fandom page and there were even like 2 different possible inspiration sources quoted but uncertain ones i think.

Who is he? And where did he get his idea from?

Marco Aurélio "Wendigo", as for the idea for Project Yi, it seems he had already been working on a Cyber yi skin independently even before Riot started the ...Project project.
He then just remade his cyber Yi to fit with the rest as part of a skinline.
As for inspiration, saw some league post about it back when project was first made about it being inspired by classical movies and games so i dare say it´s far from just one or two sources although i think Raiden from metal gear is one very likely source.
Cyborg, Sword and whatnot, but the project line is more futuristic and inspiration for those parts could have come from anywhere.
Heck he could even have looked at Cyborg from Justice league.
