Support S5: Item Changes

FarRockBF··2 votes·4,311 views

It's obvious: Support is the least wanted role in each game. People hate playing it (the proof is in the pudding - see Team Builder) - so why is it in the game? It's a nice concept but the implementation is sloppy. Yes, S4 was a huge improvement over S3 but still there is one core issue with support: itemization.

Support has the most boring job in the game; keeping the ADC alive and warding - but that would be FINE if the support would be worth much late game. Sad truth is, is the ADC gets fed then the support isn't really needed anymore and if the ADC gets pooped on; well, same. Wouldn't it be nice if the support had some use late game as well?

Now, the current itemization for support and their slow incomes lead to: Mobi boots, income item, sightstone; by the time every other role has a solid 2-3 full items. This essentially gives support the teamfight value of a wandering poro. How exciting. Sure; Blitz can pull and enemy or annie can stun the enemy, but they do no damage and the amount they can PROTECT their team gets smaller and smaller as the enemy assassins build better items.

Point is: Early game boring? We get it. Late game boring: Blah.

Now, if your ADC gets fed and you have assists, then sure you can build damage or tank earlier and be useful, but this is the only scenario where support becomes useful mid-late game in teamfights. So let's look at some options:

A. Improve Sightstone. Warding is VERY important; but Ruby Sightstone? Come-on! It's nice but adds no utility, defense, OR damage! Is this the only item in the game like this? It's pathetic. Late game you are just dying to sell it to make yourself more relevant in teamfights but you CAN'T cause you need wards. BORING.

So my suggestion: Have a 3rd tier! Ruby Sightstone > Emerald/Opal/Onyx Sightstone. Each should offer a bit MORE health and one other useful stat such as: +% MS, revive upon death like GA, active small shield for AOE teammates... Hey, now you're a bit MORE useful in team fights without being OP!

B. Support Items. After laining phase the gold income is inconsequential compared to the kills that happen mid-late game. Supports would love to sell this item but that would be so gold-inefficient that they just upgrade it instead. I've checked my stats as support: I have won nearly TWO TIMES as many games as support when I chose NOT to upgrade my support item and to rather build a new tank or damage item!

So my suggestion: Improve the tier 3 of the support items. Give them better teamfights defense/offense options.

C. One last idea: Add a bit more gold income for each support item. Really, their builds are so weak each game. Why not have a 5th real presence in teamfights??

TLDR: Support almost NEVER gets past building Mobi boots, Sightstone, and the full support item. At this point the support is literally "just another body" in teamfights. Please make mid/late-game supports a bit more presence by improving their itemization in S5!

Idk why you think supports get any weaker late game. It's not like the duration of their crowd control decreases, or their wards get any less valuable.

Morgana bind, ult zhonyas, and spellshield are all incredibly powerful support tools Leona has incredible engage potential and can lock down high damage carries for a long time Nami has powerful sustain in sieges and great disengage and pick potential Janna has a really strong teamfight, a shield that gives typically 50-100 AD in the late game (and it works on turrets for defense!) Alistar hardly needs items to be super tanky due to his ult. He has strong crowd control and disengage. Braum is... braum Zyra has really high base damage and works well with items such as Liandry's for poking down tanky frontlines, she has an insane teamfight with her ultimate and good disengage and peel with her root. Lulu has massive shields in fights, gives a ton of hp with her ultimate, powerful crowd control, and great mobility

So yeah, I really don't know where you're coming from with the whole "supports are weak lategame" motif. Supports are certainly not useless in the later stages of the game.

Relative to the other team members, YES they are weak. They don't do much damage, and unless the game got really late they cannot tank much. Their utility doesn't DECREASE as you mention, but it doesn't increase either; while every other position DOES increase in their roles.

Also, if you down-voted me, please explain why so few people enjoy playing support.

A bishop isn't worth any less than a rook, it just serves a different purpose.

You don't play chess do you?

A bishop is worth 3 points, a rook 5.

Okay a knight then. Nitpicking doesn't change my point.

Edited this out cause I'm an idiot. See quote below for dumb thing I said

**Anyhow

You're point is wrong. ADC does AD damage; so their AD improves with items. AP mid does magic damage so their magic improves with items. Tank does...tank. So tank improves with armor/health/magicres.

Support does utility. Utility does NOT improve with itemization!

LOL.

Knight = Rook.

You *REALLY *don't play chess.

Actually I know for a fact that a rook is a castle. Knights are horses. Stop being an ass.

Utility does improve with itemization because, lo and behold, it brings more utility. Buy a chalice on morgana and you can use more spells without recalling for mana Turn that chalice into a Mikaels and it scales into an item with an incredibly useful active and gives her cooldown reduction so that she can use her supportive abilities more frequently.

I wasn't being an ass, I was just being dumb for a minute. I'm an idiot. Anyhow,

Chalice/Mikaels lets her cast spells more but does not make them hold longer or bind from longer. Hence, utility does NOT improve.

Regardless, Chalice is a terrible example because it is not a core support item. You are just proving my point!

they don't tank much if you don't build that way. I've build even Soraka and Sona as AP tanks and am able to both take hits and provide good utility.

And CC is good any part of the game. You can be a really low level support, and still do excellent because of CC. 1 second of free 500 damage early on becomes one second of 2500 later on.

Supports aren't there to do damage, they are there to SUPPORT.

And some people do enjoy playing support (I main support.) Some may not want to do it all the time, but there are dedicated support players out there (when I support outside ranked, I do it with an obscure support.)

Not to mention

Sona - Buffs her whole team throughout the game, has a great early game, and her AoE stun is just amazeballs. Soraka - can be very difficult to engage upon. Later on, has absurd healing capabilities and combined with some champion's aoe, her silence can be brutal. J4+Soraka is a popular combo.

I might have exaggerated a bit; but I main support and this is what it feels like in nearly every match where we didn't get super-fed early.

Supports aren't supposed to do damage; they usually trade damage for utility. If a support ever did good, consistent damage, they would, most of the time, be played as midlane mages/top fighters not supports.

If you really want to do damage try support Nautilus. I've seen the support main I duo with solo carries as Naut mid game without being absurdly fed. He starts with the first part Targons, maxes W, and builds Sightstone > Liandries/RoA/both as his core (he gets boots at some point too obviously) and then builds tank items. Also you don't usually need to upgrade your gold income item really early; depends on your playstyle.

I play a lot of support and for me it is far from boring. I think the problem with supporting is that your efforts are not as visible as the APC or ADC nuking and shredding people to bits. The carry roles directly fulfill power fantasies. Playing support is a lot about stuff not happening. It is about warding so your laners do not get ganked or the enemy does not sneak a dragon or baron without you being able to contest. It is about peeling and shielding so your carry does not die. And sacrificing yourself for that carry or a good initiation. The changes a support player makes in a game are usually far more subtle than taking away a third of your opponents health in one split second. To see this influence you have to have a pretty good understanding of the game. I am still getting better at seeing those things. I rather play a good support and have a mediocre carry than the other way around. Because a good support gets his carry fed. And everyone can play a fed carry. For me supports (and junglers) are usually the ones who decide games. The frustrating part about supports is if the communication with your team does not work. Then I blow everything for that initiation and there is no follow up or the carries are somewhere I cannot help.
